yeah, the cantoma album is pretty good.

'nomalizo' is one of my all time favs.

makes sense u bros were already up on mdulu. really into her. another youtube find: sonya spence 'let the love flow on' (via youtube mix for pavement's 'shady lane' lol)

( ^_^) (Lamp), Monday, 4 July 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

yeah that is a beautiful record

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 4 July 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link

weirdly i've heard both of those for the first time in the last year through totally different routes to you, the mbulu was in a mix by some guy with 100 followers or so i found on soundcloud, and the sonya spence is in one of the old sorcerer mixes (all worth downloading).

it's quite poppy and he plays the odd shit tune but that might be the actual reason i've been enjoying kenneth bager from music for dreams doing his radio show from ibiza: https://soundcloud.com/music-for-dreams/kenneth-bager-music-for-75

his between-song chat is almost exactly the same and kind of cute/hilarious, he has a lot of monotone catchphrases, but mostly the music just makes me want to be high and dancing barefoot. good place to hear new things too.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 09:24 (seven years ago) link

this week's that i just posted is particularly shit in the middle tbh - some awful uptempo stuff. but maybe wade through and find what you can find.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 09:53 (seven years ago) link

I know my only contribution to this thread is the odd link... so here's another one!

ghosts that don't exist (Neil S), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 13:26 (seven years ago) link

letta mbulu has a long and varied career. some of her early records are slick south african soul and are pretty good.... there are some later ones that seem a little too schlocky to me at first listen.

the youtube playlist algorithms have been getting pretty good, haven't they? sometimes they fail bigtime (mostly by being too predictable), but other times they turn up all kinds of pleasant surprises.

wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 14:03 (seven years ago) link

that list looks great neil, thanks.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 14:36 (seven years ago) link

I'm actually going to a music festival in Bilbao tomorrow, and this list is definitely getting me in the mood

ghosts that don't exist (Neil S), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 15:15 (seven years ago) link

not really feeling the vocals on that Cantoma album.

The new Tusk Wax 21 by Ali Renault is more house than balearic but definitely worth a listen. https://www.pbvinyl.com/products/ali-renault-tusk-wax-21

Sketches from an Island 2 is so good.

afriendlypioneer, Saturday, 9 July 2016 14:11 (seven years ago) link

William Tyler maybe relevant to this thread?

just sayin, Monday, 11 July 2016 00:26 (seven years ago) link

I'm really looking forward to the new Seahawks LP that's out at the end of the month. The remix album that came out last year is a hidden gem.

afriendlypioneer, Monday, 11 July 2016 15:06 (seven years ago) link

The remix album: https://bleep.com/release/62661-seahawks-deep-haul

afriendlypioneer, Monday, 11 July 2016 15:06 (seven years ago) link

that william tyler is beautiful, thanks for that. reminds me a bit of the michael rother record, gone a little more country.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 11 July 2016 17:07 (seven years ago) link

I'm not really getting a balearic vibe from this William Tyler album, but it is nice.

afriendlypioneer, Monday, 11 July 2016 18:53 (seven years ago) link

ditto

skip, Monday, 11 July 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link

not sure if its exactly this thread for it but the dudes in tommy awards have a new-ish tape out called 'sessions II' that i think is fantastic. its on the more cosmic end of balearic but its probably my favorite new thing so far this year

( ^_^) (Lamp), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 01:33 (seven years ago) link

Think it may have been brought up in the new age thread? i remember reading about it on here. great tape though. the Origin People label & folks running it are great.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 04:38 (seven years ago) link

It was mentioned upthread. Tommy Awards are a perfect fit for this thread

groovypanda, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 09:05 (seven years ago) link

i thought some of william tyler was kinda like michael rother or goettsching a tiny bit, but probably not perfectly at home itt.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 12 July 2016 17:50 (seven years ago) link

yeah i thought this was the thread we talked about katzenmusik but apparently not

just sayin, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link

Mix of old and new on that one, I guess. Was hoping for another all vintage set.

brimstead, Friday, 15 July 2016 21:18 (seven years ago) link

Feels like we already have a year's worth of top shelf albums with Baltic Beat, Smith & Mudd and Mark Barrott.

Could not agree with this more. I keep returning to that Baltic Beat record and it keeps sounding better and better. Love that one. The title track is the stand out, but the second side is nearly as good.

Also, that Quiet Village remix comp is so killer. That Francois K remix is probably my fave.

groovypanda, Sunday, 31 July 2016 19:52 (seven years ago) link

Just ordered the Smith & Mudd and Baltic Beat. Expecting them to soundtrack the end of summer.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 31 July 2016 20:26 (seven years ago) link

I'm also digging that Baltic Beat album. Just got "Vito Ricci - I was Crossing a Bridge" on Music From Memory... https://www.discogs.com/Vito-Ricci-I-Was-Crossing-A-Bridge/release/6946911

Suso Sáiz – Odisea (also on Music From Memory) is another great piece worth investigating...https://www.discogs.com/Suso-Sáiz-Odisea/release/8537045

And last but certainly not least, I've really been enjoying Darwis by Parra for Cuva & Senoy...It's not exactly Balearic, but maybe your tastes are more diverse and this is stuff that deserves to be heard..."Sacred Feathers", the lead track on the album", gets me every time...https://www.discogs.com/Parra-For-Cuva-Senoy-Darwiš/release/8583467

brizzle, Sunday, 31 July 2016 20:50 (seven years ago) link

I basically just listened to those two, Sketches 2 and Wilson Tanner on a continuous loop on my recent holiday to Southern France xp

groovypanda, Sunday, 31 July 2016 21:06 (seven years ago) link

that the system track is amazing. wow.

also like the suso saiz record - i mean p much everything on international feel and music from memory is really good.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Sunday, 31 July 2016 22:02 (seven years ago) link

seems like a lot of these niche reissue labels are taking their cues from music-sharing blogs

i've been noticing this for over a decade... a blog sharing obscure music shares some obscure, semi-forgotten album, and some time later it's given a boutique reissue. although now the time lag seems be to getting shorter. that system album was shared on a prominent blog about a year and a half ago.

wizzz! (amateurist), Sunday, 31 July 2016 22:17 (seven years ago) link

Been playing Wilson Tanner and Sketches 2 a ton myself. Just drove down the coast of Vancouver Island listening to Sketches 2. Probably an experience I'll never forget.

Mark Barrott's wikipedia entry is pretty good.
