Facebook Troubles

*nothing* you do should show up in anyone else's feeds except for ones own damn posts. And yet replying to a public, or friend of friends post, shows up all over the place. Heck, if you make a public post about a trending topic be prepared to show up in the trending list for all to see.

I have frieds who love to get into endless online comment stoushes on things like the Guardian/the Age/feminist pages which fills my feed with shit I'm not otherwise following. Nothing I can do short of hiding them, or the site (neither of which I really wish to do).

I really try not to comment on public pages for this reason, although occasionally I slip. But then there are times when you comment on a friend's page and just don't realize it's set to public or friends of friends.

ugh man i do not like this new thing where i see postings by friends-of-friends. rando rich dumbass talking shit about san francisco.. i don't think he wants strangers like me to see this, i certainly don't want to see it, but i have to see it because a friend of mine replied to him.

A not quite as terrible but still weird corollary to this is when you get curious about random people you don't know who either like your comments or make comments on the same threads as you, click their names, and they don't have any privacy settings, and you start looking at their photos and suddenly get the icky feeling like you've snuck into someone's home and are going through their stuff.

I've got a friend who 'likes' his own posts - more often than not he's the only person who likes them - is that weird or what? I don't know enough about Facebook but I assume it's why, when I open up Facebook, his posts are invariably right at the top of the page? For instance, this morning, a quick count showed he had 22 out of the first 24 posts on my page.

... he is, of course, nuts... but not in a bad way.

managed to stumble across a video of a 12-year-old girl fatally hanging herself last night after idly wondering why 'cedartown, ga' was trending

i immediately reported it and this morning i got a notice from facebook thanking me for bringing it to their attention and that they would now ensure the video was rated only for those aged 18 and above. so i guess they're cool with people sharing snuff videos on their platform

Are there any people here who also mod a business/work FB page? My posts on there consistently reach 3 or 4k people, according to FB. Today, a post hasn't gone further than 106 people. It says. Not only do I find that hard to believe, the number of ads from FB asking me to 'boost' the post (meaning I have to pay for it to be seen more) have doubled today.

Can they just flip a switch and bury my post to try to get me to pay for 'boosting' it? Doesn't sound unlikely to me, but I don't know. FB sucks balls, that I know.

Also read something recently (a twitter thread I think) that notes that if you gave FB your phone number, you can no longer set it to"only me" and they will now hand it over to Instagram, Whatsapp and advertisers.

I feel utter vindication that I ignored their increasingly aggravating "add phone number! 2FA! You neeeeed to do this!" BS.

Pretty sure they have my number anyway, given that they included it in the prompt about adding 2FA. Like "Do your want to add this number?" I always say no but when has that ever stopped them.

Yeah if they mention it, you've had it elswhere (it can grab it from the phone app I think? I also stopped using that because it scraped my fucking address contacts and started recommending I add workmates who know NOTHING about my FB)

I saw some weird thing recently where some guy I barely know but am FB friends with got hacked. The hacker took over his account but created a new name and added a few new pictures to go with the new identity but is still friends with all the original guy’s friends. Not sure what the point of all this is, but it’s a bit creepy.

Happened to my uncle. The endgame is trying to scam money out of you on Facebook messenger.

Oh wait I misunderstood you. Never mind. In my case it was a cloned profile with a subtly different (no middle initial) name!

Seems like this scenario would only be used to keep tabs on the inherited friends.

Either something is up with the Meta sites today or I’ve been hacked.
