Why In The Name Of All That Is Holy Does Anyone Like Built to Spill?

There's Nothing Wrong With Love is one of my favorite albums ever. Doug Martsch's voice is even more ingratiatingly nerdy than Elliott Smith's, but I dunno, I've hung in with it. And on that album at least, I think he finds a good balance with the lyrics - they're so descriptive and strange but at heart you know he's just an ol' piner like Jonathan Richman.

If it came down to your life or mine, I'd do
the stu
pid thing
And let you keep on living
And let you keep on living
And let you keep on living

Among BTS fans, I think there are early and late period types. Me? I find the early period to be something annoying done well, and the late period removing that "something annoying" part. Perfect From Now On is an excellent album, transforming guitar-work into the heart of the songs, rather than as a showoff addendum. The melodies are less important than the transformation of texture over the scope of entire tracks, and broader structure. The lyrics? I don't know what they mean, and that's half the fun. I like BTS because they demand attention, hold it rapt, and give it back gently after a proper span of time. They are comfort music.

I bought Keep It Like a Secret upon a recommendation. I think I've listened to it once, and while I didn't flat out hate it I wasn't impressed enough to play it ever again.

Long way of saying that I'm an agnostice re Built to Spill.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 28 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think I've mentioned this somewhere before on this board, but "Perfect From Now On" was my "Loveless". At least, until I bought Loveless, that is. On first listen it sounded huge, enveloping, evolving and intimate at once. For about two weeks, I cherised every moment on that disc and played it whenever I could. Now, while I can still happily listen to the whole thing on occasion, it fails to move me as it once did. Nonetheless, one of my best musical experiences. I continue to love "There's Nothing Wrong with Love" though- the converse of the epic PFNO- it's cute, irreverant, charming and sincere. "Car" and "Twin Falls" are some of my favourite songs. I like "Keep it Like a Secret", don't play it very often though.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 28 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i was planning on doing a subject like this for modest mouse who i find to have even fewer charms than built to spill, but both bands seem to have ingratiated themselves into the emo/indie rawk pantheon and with such status appear to be above criticism even though they are each dull, unimaginative, hardly stirring and dirgey. they are playing new bts songs quite regularly on the college station here and it is always preceded with the most astonishing hyperbole and when i hear it i think they must have put on the wrong song. they are hefner's favourite band which makes me pause and sometimes reconsider my love for hefner. in fact a lot of bands i like seem to love bts, oh well.

keith, Monday, 28 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Regardless of where the subject line came from on these boards I'd like to think it's a reference to David Ogden Stiers in "Better Off Dead."

But anyway, I almost did a Taking Sides: BTS vs. MM, the comparisons are apt; Sterling has done a good job of explaining why BTS matter to those to whom they matter. Excepting the lyrics not meaning anything discernable, the argument fits MM as well, although I find them comforting the same way the Smiths or early Talking Heads are comforting.

Back to BTS: I can see the appeal to Darren Hayman -- at least in the vocals. ;) But yes, the hyperbole is distracting, but, um, in the indie rock/emo world who else in top of that heap besides those two (and maybe the Dismemberment Plan)? Death Cab for Cutie? Burning Airlines?? The Get-Up Kids?!?

wow, I'll all over the place here.

scott p., Monday, 28 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Keith, it's funny you should mention Modest Mouse, coz they supported Built to Spill when they played here! Anyway, Built to Spill are a good band, "Perfect From Now On" is the ultimate falling asleep to album, I've spent many afternoons drifting off to it. The lyrics are quite minimal, maybe a little OTT, but there's nothing wrong with that.

_Perfect From Now On_ is a treat. So is what I've heard of the later stuff, so I like them because they're pleasant.

Actually, Scott, I might put the Get Up Kids up there before Modest Mouse. I mean for one, they have a song called "I'm a Loner Dottie, A Rebel," and on the other they have some time shifts in their songs that are just amazing...

Jimmy: The Get-Up Kids I've heard seemed like sub-Weezer. Which tracks would you recommend?

scott p., Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Scott -- The are like Weezer... I found them back when there was the Great Weezer Drought. Along with Sloan. But anyhoo...

'Central Standard Time' is great, they do some great covers ('Regret' by N.O. and 'Close To Me' by The Cure) and 'I'm A Loner...' and the album Four Minute Mile are all good places to start.

They're one of those bands that hits the spot if you don't have to pay much for their albums (used! Napster!). You can find a lot of the stuff off their split singles and such off Gnutella or Napster or whatever program works these days.

JM, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Okay, BTS fans, today I came thisclose to buying "Ancient Melodies of the Future"- should I have walked out the store clutching the jewel box to my chest? ( I had a dream that I bought it and didn't like it much, except for one great track. Only in Dreams?)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

imagine living in the college town that spawned REM and casually going to the record store the day the new built to spill comes out. 'what are all these crowds, eh?', you wonder. and then you see them all holding the same damned album. imagine leaving in disgust. built to fucking spill, even the name says WE ARE AN ASS INDIE BAND.

ethan, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, Christ. Don't let the Indie Nation get you down. Even the Great Unwashed stumble upon a Good Thing once in a While. Widespread popularity != crap. If that were the case, the NYLPM Mafia wouldn't have anything good to say.

_There's Nothing Wrong With Love_ = beautiful naivete. _Perfect From Now On_ = epic modesty. _Keep It Like A Secret_ = melding of the previous two albums, leaning towards _Perfect_'s grandeur. I'd avoid the _Live_ album, unless you're a super-fan, or it's really cheap. And, live, they can get a bit ... unwieldy. But that's why Robert Johnson invented CDs.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dunno if Mitch finally got 'Ancient Melodies' yet or not, but FWIW, and I really enjoy it thus far. It's unmistakingly BtS, in that there's nothing drastically new with their sound. In fact, I find it to be quite similar to 'Keep it Like a Secret', but I think it demands less patience from the listener than KiLaS, more instantly gratifying. Plus, 'The Weather' is my favourite song this year.

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

tha chzza, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I love love love Built to Spill, though I don't have Ultimate Alternative Wavers, their first album -- but who does? -- or the new one, yet. Doug Martsch gets a lot of stick for having bum lyrics, but I think loads of them are certifiably brilliant. Plus having Scott Plouf, pop's most creatively understated drummer, can't hurt. I do like Get-Up Kids, but I feel vaguely dirty for doing so -- they do live in Weezer's considerable shadow. Borrow Something to Write Home About if only for the amazing "10 Minutes", which had possibly the best opening of any song last year. Then borrow the Red Letter Day EP -- both are better starting places than 4-Minute Mile, if my opinion is to be believed. If I'd bought the Jimmy Eat World today, I'd have something to say on whether they're the saviours of emo or whatever, but no. Anyone on here heard Cave-In? They're my vote for best of the current crop of post-hardcore bands. Their newest album is unreal. But I think the Plan and Death Cab are great as well.

Matthew Lazowski, Tuesday, 7 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Saw them once live. Thought running through my mind: "Blimey, Michel Foucault started a rock band." This should be a good thing alas theory was once again more interesting than praxis. What a misanthropic little tosser that singer is.

"Perfect From Now On" is the ultimate falling asleep to album,

???? you need to listen to more music.

they sound like hippie jam band music to me now after seeing them live. Every song does not need to last for 10 minutes! I still kind of like Perfect from Now On but I sold everything else. The early stuff is really horrible, that "Twin Falls" song makes me cringe. "Keep It Like A Secret" was just boring. The last record was painfully bad. Turn into Phish already, BTS, I know you want to.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

I bought Ultimate Alternative Wavers back when it came out, when BTS were (for a week or so) being billed as the next Pavement (this was at a time when every week saw a new next Pavement). I remember two decent songs: one a VU rip-off containing the phrase "say a prayer for Charlie Brown." The other (it's been ten years, so I can't remember much) sounded vaguely like something from The Yes Album. Had no interest whatsoever in anything they've released since.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 31 December 2003 17:50 (twenty years ago) link

There is Nothing Wrong With Love is a great album, that and the live one are the only ones I know. Sharp lyrical detail, good melodies, great guitar playing. And the structure of "In the Morning" is so great, how it goes from this twee indie thing to oceanic rock then stops unexpectedly.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

TINWWL is my favorite, but I never understood the love for PFNO (it wanders around too much and the journeys never pay off). The last two have high points, but are overrun with middling material.

Haven't heard the live one, but live albums rarely impress me anyway.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

It's great, is what i'm trying to say. Great.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

dlp: that's "Nowhere Nothing Fuck Up," and the song isn't really a "rip-off" of "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'"; it is referencing the song in a couple of clever ways.
Anyways, total CLASSIC as far as I'm concerned.
I think "Car" is one of the best indie rock songs ever.
And they play amazing covers. Sole-seak their cover of Macy Grey's "I Try" or Sabbath's "Mr. Crowley" or "Take the Money and Run" or "Police and Thieves" or "Dream Police."

"You Were Right" always struck me as sort of gimmicky for Doug, whom I respect quite a lot. For crying out loud, it caused a legal ruckus with the Hendrix estate, if I remember correctly.

Saw him at a Modest Mouse gig last month at the place where he used to tend bar. The BTS/MM connection is still thriving, apparently.

I love that song too-- great lyrical gimmick.

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Keep It Like a Secret = all about song architecture. Half of the praise I can formulate for it involves words like organized, built, constructed, scripted, arranged, etc. Lots of praise to offer for the hook-writing, and the kind of loose, rangy mood of it -- especially when it's rangy and peppy both -- but the organization of parts is the real miracle with it (and probably a lot of what makes me love it and rather dislike the more shapeless Perfect From Now On).

I would do a typical multi-paragraph post but some asshole just did something involving some really stank seafood in the work kitchen.

I'd definitely like to give them a go now. You mention 'Neil Young's jammier stuff' earlier on in the thread; interestingly, 65DOS, the English math-rock-prog-IDM-wank band I've been so enthusiastically promoting on ILM recently, have been trumpeting Young's 'Harvest' as their favourite new discovery, on account of its sound.
