I was just wondering when they're gonna release new stuff, it's been 6 years since Pick a Bigger Weapon. Can't say I like the "rock band" sound on many of those songs, though, with live drums and guitars and shit. Boots has always had a good ear for funky West Coast synth riffs and drum machine loops, so it's sad to hear his collabs with the RAtM guitarist have lead to this.

Guillotine sounds like vitalic. There was an amazing mix of dizzee over vitalic back in the day -- wonder of boots was inspired by that?

Why does hardly anyone rate these guys? I just discovered them while listening to those Rub mixes - "Dig It" stood out like a (funky) sore thumb in th '94 mix, hit me exactly in the right spots. Been catching up on their back catalogue and man, they're almost uniformly fantastic.

I've no idea why they're not rated more highly? IMO their lyrics are typically clever, touching, and politically astute, and their beats, while not ground-breaking or anything, are well-crafted and funky too. Plus, unlike many other political rap groups, they aren't marred either by some dodgy viewpoints (no Five Percenter style sexism in their tunes, and not too many male-lead bands have written as great a feminist anthem as "Wear Clean Drawers"), or by lack of humor. Granted, the last couple of albums have been quite uneven, but Genocide & Juice, Steal This Album, and Party Music are all as good as it gets.

Saw Boots Riley at Fairyland today, hanging out at some kid's bday party. Did not work up nerve to ask him for a photo :(

Good profile of Boots Riley in NYT Mag, anticipating his imminent film Sorry to Bother You. Liked his 2011 comparison of the Obama presidency to getting a black manager at McDonald's. How come y'all didn't give him the shit I took?

I'm going to be an English teacher next year and I've been thinking about giving the students "Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night."
