when i first saw this thread i thought to myself "kim deal, no question"
but the other day i finally replaced my copy of Confusion is Sex and all i have to say is "I'LL SHAKE OFF YOUR FLESH!!!"

Fetchboy (Felcher), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:02 (eighteen years ago) link

four months pass...
kim gordon
because she's a sonic youth member

cata martinez, Monday, 2 January 2006 00:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim Wilde.

BTW, Kim Gordon is at least 10 years older than Kim Deal. Serious MILFing.

Mitya (mitya), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:00 (eighteen years ago) link

SO FUCKING OBVIOUS!: kim mitchell.

Freud Junior (Freud Junior), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:12 (eighteen years ago) link

kim gordon

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Gordon. No disrespect to Deal, but come ON -- "Flower," "Kissability," "Pattern Recognition," "Shadow of a Doubt," "Beauty Lies," "Orange Rolls, Angel Spit," "I Love You Golden Blue," etc etc etc etc.

xero (xero), Monday, 2 January 2006 02:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim Gordon. Though I certainly have a weak spot for everything Kim Deal's done musically.

Marty Innerlogic (marty innerlogic), Monday, 2 January 2006 16:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Gordon, obv. I also can barely even remember what KD's voice sounds like.

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 2 January 2006 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Deal, obv.

Cracks (Crackity), Monday, 2 January 2006 16:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Gordon, obv. More important in her heyday, cooler, part of a better band. She's even aged better. Aside from Albini's production, is there anything nice to say about the Breeders?

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 01:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Gordon is the better musician, but Deal is way cooler. In the end Deal wins.

Stephen C (ihope), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 02:22 (eighteen years ago) link

"Aside from Albini's production, is there anything nice to say about the Breeders?"

fun, quirky, catchy songs?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 02:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Deal, BTW

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 02:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim Gordon I must agree with Fetchboy (wangchungvsah...), August 5th, 2005. ever since I heard "Shaking Hell" I've had a crush on her. so brilliant, like dolphin brilliant. doodle is cool as well

Sock Villers, Friday, 13 January 2006 05:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I must say that some day I hope Kim Gordon and Thurton Moore's daughter makes music amazing music, like her genes should allow her to do

J. Lamphere (WatchMeJumpStart), Friday, 13 January 2006 05:43 (eighteen years ago) link

KIM FOWELY!!!! okay, okay, Kim Deal. MUCH better songwriter and for influencing "smells like teen spirit" without a single SOUL noticing - exact same dynamics as "gigantic"! Sonic Youth had the noise thing going good, (nice to see some people who appreciate "confusion is sex")but the Pixies never made a bad album throughout their career, Sonic Youth have had quite a few misses in theirs, come on have you even HEARD that "Dirty" crap!?

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 13 January 2006 07:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Plus, that picture of Kim Deal up above is enough to make me choose her.hmmmm...I wonder what she smells like? Man, that one pic of Kim Gordon looks like Freddy Krueger! WOOF!!!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 13 January 2006 09:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim Salmon. Number 1 for fun.

Deal takes Gordon though. Mainly due to Thurstons vulgar ego trip.

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Friday, 13 January 2006 11:59 (eighteen years ago) link

"Gordon. No disrespect to Deal, but come ON -- "Flower," "Kissability," "Pattern Recognition," "Shadow of a Doubt," "Beauty Lies," "Orange Rolls, Angel Spit," "I Love You Golden Blue," etc etc etc etc."

d00d, 1/2 those songs mentioned are totally forgetable. now, if you had put "Addicted to Love" in there, i might be w/ you!

vulgar ego trip????? wha???

btw-kimmy d. i don't even think i care what she smells like anymore...i'd just do whatever w/ her, so long as @ the end of the day we had a few beers and hung out...
that and she's violently against the internet!!!
KIM DEAL WINS TEH INNERNET GAME!!!11

eedd, Friday, 13 January 2006 16:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Deal in half a heartbeat.

A: Kim Thayil

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 13 January 2006 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim Deal made the Pixies brilliant once ("Gigantic") and just barely noticeable at all other times. Imagine the Pixies without Deal and you're imagining the most faceless- and anonymous-sounding band in the world.

Kim Gordon did great work with SY; her GAP ads (billboards in Boston) don't negate that work by any means, but it does call certain things into question. Is sweatshop labor all cool and acceptable and "new weird america" and ringer-shirted now?

I'm no Pixies fanatic, but I can't get on board with this at all...
I guess it comes down to the fact that I'd rather listen to the Pixies, The Amps and possibly the Breeders than Sonic Youth most of the time.

will(iam), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:07 (eighteen years ago) link

so Deal, I suppose.

will(iam), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Wow, is this a tough one.

I’m going to go with Kim Deal for the Amps album alone (the first two Breeders records were great, I’ve no familiarity with the Pixies whatsoever). Kim Gordon’s awesome too – esp. w/r/t Free Kitten, doens’t anyone else like them but me? -- but there’s no song/record of hers I come back to as much as I do to Pacer.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:31 (eighteen years ago) link

'm no Pixies fanatic, but I can't get on board with this at all...

I should note that I think the first Breeders album is totally brilliant. I never saw the fuss about the Pixies until I heard Pod and realized who the brains (and heart and soul) behind the Pixies was.

I don't think Frank Black is totally dull...just not real deserving of the heaps of praise he gets.

But ultimately, I'll take Sister over alla that combined.

OH GEEZ!! That pic of Kim Deal is almost enough to make me switch votes, WOOF!! Nah, I'd still pick Deal, ya see it's about the talent not the pics!

ok so im gonna have to say kim deal. it seems to me like kim gordon does alot more singing and i really love her voice even though she sounds a little more manly than kim deal, but i love kim deals voice too (the intro to tony's theme comes to mind). as to playing i really like kim deals style and tone, but umm to all those people who were saying how sonic youth doesnt need a bass and you can even hear her, well thats just wrong. just because she isnt playing all the time doesnt mean shes bad. i have to say tho, as a bassist/lead singer kim deal has probably influenced me alot more than kim gordan. i have to say my opinion is probably biased because i havent checked out any of the other stuff either of the kims have done outside of the pixies or sonic youth but hey whatever. and kim deal is hotter.

joe maher, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:02 (eighteen years ago) link

ok you all know im better than kim gordon. i really like the song my friend goo tho. props to her for that.

kim deal, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought Kim Deal was opposed to the net? At least that's what somebody mentioned above....

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 05:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim Deal for about fifty reasons, the most compelling and immediate of which is "One Divine Hammer." Jesus, what a song - surely goes in any grunge top ten. Kim Gordon doesn't come close ever.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 05:33 (eighteen years ago) link

deal, hands down.

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 06:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Deal! She of the much sexier voice and MUCH better music.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 07:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim D. is opposed to innernet. and digital recording, as well.

a long time ago, supposedly, some local photographer in Dayton, OH went to Deal's house and took some candid (read-post shower) pics from outside looking in. then went on line and attempted to sell said pics. i think that sealed the deal for Deal...

dunno how legit this story is.

eedd, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 17:50 (eighteen years ago) link

and there's no link to these pics? you tease!

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 20:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Gordon.

"Brave men run/in my family" = better than any line Deal ever wrote

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:41 (eighteen years ago) link

forget lines, what about the music?

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:50 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't see why one should be more important than the other.

fwiw, I own and listen to way more SY than I do the Pixies (I don't even own any Breeders, or Amps, or whatever)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:57 (eighteen years ago) link

You know what, you're right! This thread was created to get us all riled up about who is better than who! And we fell for it!! OK. I'm not riled up.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I meant that I don't see why music should be considered more important than lyrics.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:11 (eighteen years ago) link

aaaaaaaaa forget it then.No wait, I still think I made a good point...

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:19 (eighteen years ago) link

It's sad there is a question. Kim Deal is argueably one of the most cool people of all time. If you were to take the word "Cool!" and somehow find a way to carve it on every grain of sand on every beach across the planent it would not equal one nano-millionth of her sheer and inherrant coolness.

Ueriah, Thursday, 9 February 2006 00:56 (eighteen years ago) link

so youre goin' with her here then, huh?

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Thursday, 9 February 2006 01:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Sonic Youth are probably my second favourite band of all time - after Pixies. Kim Deal is simply the coolest person of all time with the greatest voice of all time - I have argued constantly with my mates who are all typical Scottish musical racists - ie, they listen to Oasis and all this crap - and say that both bands are crap. This simply is not true: Deal is fantastic, Cannonball and Gigantic are two of my favourite songs and i prefer the Sonic Youth songs sung by Thurston Moore - Teen Age Riot, Sugar Kane, Dirty Boots etc. (I know Kim sings at the start of Teen Age Riot, but the song doesn't really kick in till Thurston comes in) I'm not really a fan of Gordon's voice - it's not that I don't like it, I mean I don't mind it - it's just Kim Deal's voice is fantastic... so Kim Deal, hands down, anyday.

Scott McIlravey, Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Deal, because I never wish she'd just shut up with her lame-ass mutterings and get to the fucking song. Spirit design my ass.

js (honestengine), Thursday, 23 February 2006 20:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I think it's "spirit desire" but anyway does Deal sing the coda of "Alec Eiffel"? If so, I'm tempted to give it her just for that.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 23 February 2006 22:39 (eighteen years ago) link

no that's black francis

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 23 February 2006 22:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I will forgive Ned Raggett for hating Magnetic Fields if he endorses Deal.
