William Bell was part of those Americana Awards npr video-streamed but I am guessing Ms. Jody and Pokey Bear were not
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 22 September 2016 14:56 (seven years ago) link
Bobby Rush was not part of the awards night, but NPR did do a webcast of him...The majority were white rootsy countryish folks. ...Ain't that Americana, land of the free

This thread needs a mention of Bishop Bull Winka, the Alabama guy who did "Hell 2 da Naw Naw"...
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 6 October 2016 14:06 (seven years ago) link
So the ideal would be for the Americana awards to embrace this thread's version of southern soul because it is worthy, and not because of any alleged "authenticity" of one style versus another

I went to the Hardway Connection's 35th Anniversary show at a roller rink way out in exurban Bealeton, Virginia
The Heavy Hitters of Soul Tribute To Hardway Connection's 35th Anniversary, featuring Roy C, Donnie Ray, J. Red The Nephew, Maurice Wynn & Shay Denise. Plus of course, Hardway Connection.
Big well-dressed crowd (lots of guys with flashy hats and suits). Donnie Ray sounded great, although he was singing over tracks. Roy C. is getting older but his raunchy tales of cheating and getting cheated on, still worked. Hardway were great. The others were more uneven but had their moments.

I'll take Donnie Ray and Hardway over npr darling Adia Victoria
― curmudgeon, Monday, 17 October 2016 15:50 (seven years ago) link
Donnie Ray's 2011 song "Who's Rockin You" and his song "Doghouse" sounded great when he sung them live (even though he was backed by tracks and not a band)

I still need to hear Rush's latest "Porcupine Meat" . It being on Rounder and a Scott Billington production has me nervous it will be too stiff and Americana

The new Ms. Jody album from this year may be better than King and Solange (or at least as good)
― curmudgeon, Friday, 16 December 2016 15:46 (seven years ago) link
The Ms. Jody album has a zydeco inflected tune on it. Its great that southern soul and zydeco are coming together in a cool southern Venn diagram

Still liking that Ms. Jody album. Too bad most folks ignore this genre or look down on it

No mention of it in the Slate "Music Club" or on NPR or in the Wire or Fader or Fact

So I tweeted Daddy B Nice's list at Ann P#wers of NPR and said that William Bell fans should check out Ms. Jody and others that Daddy likes. She retweeted it, and said Yes!
But later she followed up with : In 2017 the most powerful Americana albums will be released by people of color. This isn't a prediction, it's a fact: I have advances.
But most of the best "Americana" is not called that, and is released by people of color who don't send advances to NPR

x-post--Finally watched Nellie Tiger Travis on Fallon, Fallon only let her do a 30 second version of the song with the Roots. Meanwhile, Kings of Leon got way too much time. Oh well, at least she was on the show.

William Bell won a Grammy for best Americana album, and got to perform with Gary Clark doing his old co-written song "Born Under a Bad Sign." Alas, the Grammys wanted to appeal to old fart blues-rock fans, rather than letting Bell do an awesome soul ballad from his winning album.
Bobby Rush won the blues category for his Porcupine album. Yay!

I just scored a guest list spot to see the Take Me to the River tour: Bobby Rush, William Bell and Charlie Musselwhite. Excited! I haven't seen Bobby since sometime in the early oughts, he doesn't tour here often.
― the young, low level volunteer named (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 21:47 (six years ago) link
I splurged for the DC show of that tour. We had Bobby Rush, and William Bell but no Musselwhite. We also had a Stax panel with old-school Stax folks, plus an excerpt from the movie and the Stax school kid musicians. Alas, the latter got more time than I wanted. Rush and Bell were great, but just didn't have enough tiume to do a full set.
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:43 (six years ago) link
Totally agree about Stax school kids, was it the the young white guy with the pony tail? He did 5 or 6 Al Green and Otis Redding covers, passably but he really overstayed his welcome. Bobby Rush seems to have energy to spare at 84, no need to pad the set to give him a rest.
― the young, low level volunteer named (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 2 November 2017 16:02 (six years ago) link
Yes, that's the one. Bobby Rush is still so impressive. Thinking about what he's been through in life and how he is still at it, giving 110 %.
