One thing wires do is keep you from losing your shit. Hope replacement EarHolePods are cheap.

Do like the sound of the one-touch set-up across all devices. The kind of thing Apple used to impress with.

We've had three different iPads in my house and I pretty much never use them. There is virtually no task that doesn't make more sense to do either on my phone or on my laptop.

i do ~a third of my reading on an iPad and take it on trips (bigger screen nicer for maps, googling somewhere to eat nearby) but otherwise yeah kind of a weird product. the one i have is so slow though it's useless for anything else

flopson, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:33 (seven years ago) link

Ohhhhh I see you have to buy the beats bullshit to get usable headphones. The camera had me leaning toward an iphone but this shit is pissing me off.

agree the one-touch setup is smart though, xp

i use my ipad for seamless and that's literally it

dude bluetooth still works btw

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:35 (seven years ago) link

airpod designers obviously do not have kids

if they work on macs and ipads then it's using bluetooth chips presumably with some bells and whistles in the protocol to obviate pairing

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:36 (seven years ago) link

hmm possibly

I haven't kept up, but the main complaint was people thinking the codecs apple supported were too lossy and aptX or w/e was better, but apple wasn't supporting that. it's possible they're using bluetooth and their own lossless codec or something

i'm so glad they chose to soft transition us into airpods (not liking apple's proprietary streak but it is what it is)

i'm pretty much content and will prob buy one unless some major crappy feature is announced

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:37 (seven years ago) link

one thing I will say is that this is a much more interesting launch than the 6, which was basically "It's really thin!"

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:38 (seven years ago) link

(and bigger)

Spottie, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:39 (seven years ago) link

So there's pretty much not going to be a way to charge while using wired headphones, right?

If they're anything like the Bragi Dash buds they use Bluetooth to connect to device but near-field magnetic induction (NFMI) to connect to each other.

schwantz, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:41 (seven years ago) link

The headphone jack thing really does annoy me. The adapter seems clumsy and easy to lose. I don't want to buy new lightning headphones, I have no interest in using wireless headphones, and I definitely am not going in for earpods or garbage-ass Beats proprietary headphones.

And I'm definitely not relying on the earbuds they provide.

Like how do you connect the Beats to any other source? macs? Do they have a cable slot? Fuck buying dedicated phone headphones

stet, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:43 (seven years ago) link

they connect wireless presumably over bluetooth stet

increased storage at same price suggests to me they're not getting as much icloud traction as they'd like

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link

if they woulda kept it 16 at the base that would have been the worst mistake apple had ever made.

Spottie, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:50 (seven years ago) link

wait wtf was the price on the airpods

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:50 (seven years ago) link

Spottie, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 18:50 (seven years ago) link

rip apple

marcos, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 19:01 (seven years ago) link

My current hypothesis is that the phone hardware including EarPods is all a profitable R&D operation for chip design for the next platform. Every new thing they do involves new modules on the A-series or a new standalone chip in a new and more miniature and power-efficient package. Apple will make some people mad with the no headphone jack but they'll make another few tens of billions of dollars when the chip work all pays off.

I'm on the fence personally. I can totally imagine though that in the next few years plenty of people, especially younger folks, will be fine with abandoning the analog jack, so I'm not exactly gonna call RIP Apple on this one. And I doubt it hurts them that much if they don't sell a ton of Airpods.
