lol the cell phone carrier stores are horrible. it's a cross-section of the worst customers and the poor sales/service people who are stuck working there

someone on facebook took a picture because he was at the at&t store and a random shirtless dude walked in. going to the at&t store, why wear a shirt?

The only think that scares me away from the nexus is how terrible a company google is when it comes to privacy, but I already use chrome and gmail and google calendar so I don't know what I think I'm avoiding

i came to the same conclusion the same way. apple's commitment to privacy is superb, but i jumped on the google train a decade ago and it's too late to panic now (also that i'll be dead in 50 years). The only think that scares me away from the nexus is how terrible a company google is when it comes to privacy, but I already use chrome and gmail and google calendar so I don't know what I think I'm avoiding

terrible

marcos, Friday, 9 September 2016 21:06 (seven years ago) link

but mostly because of the fucking price. I've been fine with my stock Nexus phone, which is not larded up with bloatware and cost like $300, which is enough savings to mitigate whatever I'm missing by avoiding the iPhone.

otm. now that phone tech has basically settled down apple prices are tricky to justify. if google's new nexus/pixel phones are great and affordable, it'll be tough to defend anything in the apple/samsung galaxy price range.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 9 September 2016 21:07 (seven years ago) link

that is possibly the ugliest thing apple has ever designed, xp.

So I've been hearing preorders are kind of backed up?

I'm going to be at Costco this evening and they have Verizon preorders there for in-store order only. I may just talk to them and see what the wait is and whether they're offering any deal (sometimes they'll give you a cash back card or something). Even if not, I get a total of 4% back on Costco purchases btw my exec membership and my Costco visa, so I may purchase there for the extra discount.

backed up for shipping, I mean. Although mostly for the black and jet black. I have no problem with a silver phone that comes earlier if I do order it. That thing is going in a case anyway.

kind of funny how we've gone from headphones and cell phone accessories being these janky-ass things that look like whatever to being outraged that a wireless stereo headphone set that's also a microphone, has two earpieces that aren't connected but work together, don't look like... idk, whatever we think it's supposed to look like

tbrr I spend the majority of my computing time each week on my Dell work laptop which is completely fine when it comes to getting things done (it's docked and I have dual monitors on adjustable arms and a real keyboard mouse) but it is fundamentally the ugliest, worst-designed object I use regularly.
90% of the time when I pick it up I manage to hit the dvd drive eject button. Despite being 15", it has a screen the same resolution as the 13" model from that year (I won't even get into how fucked up the ordering process was that made this happen). It's running Windows fucking 7. It lacks several ports I would love to have on it (like displayport! but that's on the docking station luckily) and has several ports I don't think anyone would ever consider using in 2016.

being enthusiastic about technology, especially new hardware stuff, is nearly evacuated from my soul. if it was the 90s version of me, I'd probably have some incredibly fringe cell phone that has one particular feature it does better than any other device and be crowing about it and I just can't be bothered to give a fuck anymore because in 2016 most things just work and are good enough. but some things really do feel a little futuristic and even if everyone's done wireless stereo earbuds or oled screens or whatever I feel like apple waits until they can do things with a basic level of competence and if it's a consumer product in my hands it'll work fine.

idk just felt like getting it off my chest

honestly when I work from home next time, I'm probably going to plug my work laptop into my home network and then remote into it from my mac

i like to think the airbuds tilt slightly up, prehensile-like, when the wearer hears something interesting

can also be configured to tilt up when the wearer swipes right

well this is a whole lot worse than not having a headphone jack:

Well, that's not about exerting excessive control or making people's hard earned cash commodities ultimately redundant.

Of course it's bad but I imagine Apple would have actually acted worse and way more defensively and even aggressively in a similar circumstance.

would have found the affected batch and the battery factory and removed both from existence

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Saturday, 10 September 2016 02:07 (seven years ago) link

samsung probably uses the same garage battery shops to make the cells for the phone batteries as for their various other batteries that have been catching fire.

I ordered the 128GB 7 in silver. Two week delivery and Costco gives me a 25 dollar cash card. It was only 11 per month over my current plan to switch to the pay per month plan and avoid paying the upgrade upfront so it made sense.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Saturday, 10 September 2016 02:28 (seven years ago) link

http://bensbargains.com/thecheckout/bens-bytes/want-to-save-200-a-year-dont-switch-to-the-iphone-7/

This article cleared up some things for me. I was confused because - while most single Verizon users were on a plan that was something like $70 a month ($30 data + $40 "line fee" that hid the phone payments spread out over 2 years) I've already been on a family plan so my line fee has been at the lowest rate already ($10 line fee). The plan I'm on isn't even available anymore, and has been replaced by another all-inclusive plan.

Current Verizon offer is something like trade in your old iPhone and get $300-$650 "credited" over two years to buffer the discounted phone cost. Again sounds like a kind of weird trick to rope you into a 2-year contract and punish you for trying to switch carriers.

Nhex, Saturday, 10 September 2016 03:26 (seven years ago) link

The plan I'm on is my dad pays for my phone service and I recommend it

Xp I just had the guy switch me from a contract plan to the new kind of plan. So basically instead of 40/mo line access plus an $300 upgrade fee, I'm paying $20/mo line access and $31/mo for the phone. It made sense. And I like this plan better because I won't feel like there's financial incentive to upgrade immediately at the end of two years.

So anyway -- downloaded the new iOS, runs on my iPhone 6 just fine, definitely not bothering with a phone purchase until next year.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 18:17 (seven years ago) link

new iOS seems good, on the surface, so far anyway

Seriously considering a new watch.

Annoyed by the lock screen change on iOS 10, swiping is easier than clicking, what was the thinking behind that?

flappy bird, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:58 (seven years ago) link

you already have your finger on the button to unlock it w/touchid

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:02 (seven years ago) link

i dont fuck with touch id tho

flappy bird, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:14 (seven years ago) link

They got rid of swipe to unlock?? I'm feeling kind of Gruber about this if true

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:24 (seven years ago) link

ios 10 kinda sux imo

Clay, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:29 (seven years ago) link

yeah it's gone, i keep swiping right and getting notifications

flappy bird, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:31 (seven years ago) link

iOS 10 good because the hilarious bullshit in the new iMessage is πŸ‘Œ, I've got PokΓ©mon stickers now

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:51 (seven years ago) link

yeah worth it for the messages update alone

Spottie, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 22:02 (seven years ago) link

my beef with removing slide to unlock is sometimes touchID won't recognize my print if it's dusty or damp. I used to be able to use my a knuckle to swipe then punch in the code.
