Seriously considering a new watch.

Annoyed by the lock screen change on iOS 10, swiping is easier than clicking, what was the thinking behind that?

flappy bird, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:58 (seven years ago) link

you already have your finger on the button to unlock it w/touchid

dr. mercurio arboria (mh ๐Ÿ˜), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:02 (seven years ago) link

i dont fuck with touch id tho

flappy bird, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:14 (seven years ago) link

They got rid of swipe to unlock?? I'm feeling kind of Gruber about this if true

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:24 (seven years ago) link

ios 10 kinda sux imo

Clay, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:29 (seven years ago) link

yeah it's gone, i keep swiping right and getting notifications

flappy bird, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:31 (seven years ago) link

iOS 10 good because the hilarious bullshit in the new iMessage is ๐Ÿ‘Œ, I've got Pokรฉmon stickers now

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 21:51 (seven years ago) link

yeah worth it for the messages update alone

Spottie, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 22:02 (seven years ago) link

my beef with removing slide to unlock is sometimes touchID won't recognize my print if it's dusty or damp. I used to be able to use my a knuckle to swipe then punch in the code.

Spottie, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 22:31 (seven years ago) link

So anyway -- downloaded the new iOS, runs on my iPhone 6 just fine, definitely not bothering with a phone purchase until next year.

also faster swiping/swooshing, which i wasn't expecting.

moving music controls into a separate control centre is all manner of wtf. if the point of a control centre is convenience, why move some of it off-screen?

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 22:37 (seven years ago) link

Not a fan so far. Everything seems slower and too Android-y. I'm running a two year old 6+, given, but still.

Nhex, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 23:37 (seven years ago) link

the more android-y it feels, the less scary it will be to switch to android

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 23:40 (seven years ago) link

Sadly, I agree!

Nhex, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 23:40 (seven years ago) link

Idk I still don't want an ad company data mining my phone

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 23:42 (seven years ago) link

otm, if anything were to keep me with apple it would be that

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 23:54 (seven years ago) link

sad!

dr. mercurio arboria (mh ๐Ÿ˜), Thursday, 15 September 2016 03:30 (seven years ago) link

Small thing, but I dig the sounds on the new iOS. Apple's always been good at that, but closing out your phone feels especially satisfying.

circa1916, Friday, 16 September 2016 03:53 (seven years ago) link

If you care about speed and responsiveness, never upgrade to a major new iteration of the OS past what the phone came with. A 4S running iOS 9 may as well be a paperweight. This is Apple's way to persuade people to buy new phones. Of course their plausible deniability defense comes in the name of "security."

calstars, Friday, 16 September 2016 05:52 (seven years ago) link

A 4S running iOS 9

hi

just sayin, Friday, 16 September 2016 06:14 (seven years ago) link

The problem with that is that so many major apps go with the iOS upgrade cycle so you start getting locked out

Nhex, Friday, 16 September 2016 06:25 (seven years ago) link

My 5 is running iOS 10 with no noticeable slowdown. if anything battery life seems a bit up.

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 16 September 2016 08:47 (seven years ago) link

so you're saying I shouldnt update on a 6? i'm debating

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 16 September 2016 09:39 (seven years ago) link

don't

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 September 2016 09:42 (seven years ago) link

I have a 5s. My major problem pre-update was Spotlight search getting increasingly slow and often just failing to return results at all, making it useless as an app launcher (I have 242 apps on my phone, don't judge me).

I've had iOS 10 for about a week now on my 5s and I love it. Definitely no slower for me and Spotlight now works again, returning results instantly.

Alba, Friday, 16 September 2016 10:29 (seven years ago) link

spotlight works? cool, i had completely given up on it

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 September 2016 10:30 (seven years ago) link

Yeah. I've turned it off for most things, so can't testify to how well it works as a global deep search, but it's quick as you like as an app launcher again.

Alba, Friday, 16 September 2016 10:33 (seven years ago) link

marvellous

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 September 2016 11:03 (seven years ago) link

I have a 5 (no touch ID) - how will I unlock mah screen??

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 September 2016 11:06 (seven years ago) link

Yeah my spotlight is back too. I had completely trained myself to find apps on the screens, now I need to adjust back.

Jeff, Friday, 16 September 2016 11:28 (seven years ago) link

w 5 once it's one (either by home button or top button) you have to press the home button one more time then enter your password

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 16 September 2016 11:38 (seven years ago) link

er once it's -on-

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 16 September 2016 11:38 (seven years ago) link

convenient

Same here. iOS10 has made my 5s faster than it's ever been. iOS9 felt like it had the hiccups at times, thinking too long, but everything's damn smooth and fast now.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 16 September 2016 11:45 (seven years ago) link

that little shimmering swipey stripe was the first thing most people ever saw when they first saw an iphone, it's so iconic, i guess it's 'courageous' to ditch it but the phone feels lessened by its removal

will by psyched if the little typing lags disappear (up to 2-3 seconds at times for me on a 5)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 September 2016 11:47 (seven years ago) link

My 5s is defo better in that department, reducing those typing lags.

While this is the best iPhone experience I had so far, this could well be my last one. Not feeling the 7 at all. Just the thought of switching to Android though... Ugh.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 16 September 2016 11:49 (seven years ago) link

your muscle memory will still swipe and you end up on the notifications screen and I think the idea is that that screen is like a big watch screen, with a lot of the info you're looking for already there, so that you won't have to unlock the phone so much.

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 16 September 2016 11:49 (seven years ago) link

Yeah pretty much everyone saying iOS10 performs better than 9 on older phones. Wouldn't worry about upgrading.

As irritating as some of Apple's quirks are, I have a Samsung Galaxy for work and goddamn it's a clunky, unintuitive mess. Not jumping ship anytime soon.

circa1916, Friday, 16 September 2016 12:07 (seven years ago) link

Really don't understand Apple's need to revamp existing features in some new way. We all know where the notification screen is. But now it's somewhere different. Though nothing beats Windows 8 tile revamp for sheer wtf-ness

calstars, Friday, 16 September 2016 12:08 (seven years ago) link

my daughter has an android phone & it is a steady source of annoyance to her, when I've had to help her with it it's like futzing with windows 95 or DOS.

stock android is 100 times better. touchwiz can burn in hell.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 September 2016 12:35 (seven years ago) link

(marshmallow up, not 4.2 or whatever)

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 September 2016 12:36 (seven years ago) link

wasn't aware that Samsung was running a bastardized version of Android but lol the name TouchWiz perfectly encapsulates how junky and cut-rate it feels.

changing swipe up for camera to swipe right for camera sucks

้พœ, Friday, 16 September 2016 12:59 (seven years ago) link

otm

change is fine but so much of ios10 feels like change for the sake of change

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 September 2016 12:59 (seven years ago) link

your muscle memory will still swipe and you end up on the notifications screen

doesn't happen on my 5. if i swipe in the traditional way then "press home to unlock" just bounces back mockingly

seems odd that people with squidgy/mushy home buttons (i.e. people still using their 5) would now be asked to press the home button many, many more times a day but i suppose that's the goal, to hasten this beloved object's demise :/

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 September 2016 13:13 (seven years ago) link

โ€• licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, September 16, 2016 2:39 AM (three hours ago)

don't

โ€• Autumn Almanac, Friday, September 16, 2016 2:42 AM (three hours ago)

Exactly. As I mentioned earlier in the week, there is absolutely no need. Download the new iOS and don't worry about buying anything until next year.
