Urban Dictionary: flopson

Apr 13, 2009 - flopson. Someone who lacks the ability to get 'it' up. Jenny: "I pulled this guy last night, but sent him home...he was such a flopson!".

flopson, Friday, 16 September 2016 15:40 (seven years ago) link

just followed you. I'm not really @propertybrothers btw, in case that wasn't obvious.

I have no idea why but mine is still my actual name. been planning on changing that (change account name, quickly change a second account to my name to keep it) but it hasn't happened yet

I occasionally interact w/ fdb about standardised assessment of English proficiency. He seems ok most of the time.

flopson, Friday, 16 September 2016 18:15 (seven years ago) link

humorless thin-skinned white dude campus leftist crybaby who blocks everyone who disagrees with him

flopson, Friday, 16 September 2016 18:16 (seven years ago) link

he quit twitter forever for like a week a while ago lol

lag∞n, Friday, 16 September 2016 18:17 (seven years ago) link

his tone is so sanctimonious and blegh that even when i agree w him my instinct is to disagree

flopson, Friday, 16 September 2016 18:22 (seven years ago) link

lol flopson I haven't gotten any notifications so either I commented on a dead thread or he's blocked me in some way on fb now

it was a comment about this article: http://thebaffler.com/salvos/degrasse-tyson-kriss-atheists
he somehow missed the point and was complaining that homophobic, racist evangelicals are a much bigger threat than atheists so why are you picking on atheists

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 16 September 2016 18:34 (seven years ago) link

commented to this effect: imo if evangelical christianity disappeared tomorrow these people would still have the same in-group/out-group ideas and be just as racist/sexist/resistant to change

I mean, Trump is the great uniter of a bunch of these people and the far-right christian types fell over backward finding reasons to support his godless ways

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Friday, 16 September 2016 18:36 (seven years ago) link

Sounds like his schtick. he seemed overly concerned with the efficacy of the movement ("don't wate time criticizing what i perceive as a lesser evil, focus on overthrowing capitalism!")

flopson, Friday, 16 September 2016 19:10 (seven years ago) link

Which is typical orthodox leftbro humorless impenetrability to the tenets of intersectional anti-oppressive movements.

It's like Marxists have never heard of the strategy of "doing both"

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Friday, 16 September 2016 19:15 (seven years ago) link

get you a movement can do both

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Friday, 16 September 2016 19:19 (seven years ago) link

I think we were just talking about FDB on another thread but I can't remember which, and I find him very hit-or-miss.

fdb is awful though to be fair i confuse him w/ friedersdorf

marcos, Friday, 16 September 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link

I started by following a bunch of liberal-to-left media people/bloggers etc. and so far my feed is kind of depressing, it's just this frenzy of people shitting themselves about trump's fallon appearance, trump's hotel thing, trump's hair, how the media should stop giving trump so much coverage, etc. I feel like there's a lot of denial going on about what the media is/are and about how good Trump is for it, even as its members express how upset they are over the phenomenon they are part of.

I still have all my election filters in place so I miss anything actually using the candidate names etc

we need better image recognition filters imo

also just like, ur not gonna overthrow capitalism maybe ever but def not anytime soon so maybe in the meantime could do some of those things

flopson, Friday, 16 September 2016 19:30 (seven years ago) link

My feeling is that capitalism is either going to fuck itself up, proving him right, or not, proving him wrong, and I can't really change that so I'm just gonna sit back and watch capitalism play itself right

Idk, I'd much rather read Adolph Reed than FDB (not that I necessarily agree with either) but the critique of soft-liberal identity politics from the left seems like a useful provocation at times. Whether cranky Marxists are correct is less important than ensuring progressive politics doesn't end up as the endless repetition of woke dogma.

aw /sigh/

lag∞n, Friday, 16 September 2016 19:50 (seven years ago) link

twitter is definitely better when you follow real people and not brands or companies, though prob 80% of my twitter use is to stay connected in my field so i do follow a lot of libraries, academic departments, universities, and orgs. i've been involved in a lot of diversity/inclusion/social justice work in my field so a good chunk of my feed is black lives matter and social justice stuff in higher ed. i think i need more weirdness though. using it for work too makes me hesitant and sometimes guarded to post certain stuff so i haven't really gone in 100%

marcos, Friday, 16 September 2016 19:59 (seven years ago) link

i can't follow too many social justice accounts, a lot of them are just so high-frequency they instantly dominate yr feed. you get enough of it just by following normal people and seeing the RTs imo

flopson, Friday, 16 September 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

idk if I'd call weird twitter "real people" but they're familiar to me

Yeah I think there is something to this. It's sort of a fine line because some of the stuff fueling the "woke dogma" is very legit, but it can also lead into this terrible maze of individualistic/atomized non-analysis. Also because in this election all that "woke" stuff was pretty quickly coopted by the Clinton campaign and used against Bernie Sanders supporters.

I would follow you marcos! I keep twitter totally separate from my professional life tho
I am @joshuabizabcock

I basically just follow friends, ILx0rs, and the occasional entertaining celebrity account (Ralph Bakshi, Daniel Pinkwater, Sarah Silverman, Julia Wertz etc.) I can handle people that post a million things a day though gtfo with that shit

also fwiw imo the discussion the media is having amongst itself rn re how to cover trump is extremely important and may save human civilization from violet collapse, even tho its "the media" criticizing "the media" which i know is hard to understand
