"The correct answer to the poll is the Pixies with Modern Lovers a close second."
No, actually it's not.
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago) link
bill magill, ladies and gentlemen!
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 17:57 (fifteen years ago) link
Don't mind me, i just hate that "the correct answer is..." bullshit. But I agree that Godsmack sucks.
― Bill Magill, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link
I think we can all agree on that
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link
I find it profoundly depressing that Aerosmith and the Cars (both of whom certainly had their moments) both got more votes than the Modern Lovers.
― Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 22 April 2009 18:10 (fifteen years ago) link
Bill Magill, always such a delight.
If this were a poll about best song titles from Boston bands then Anal Cunt would have to win.
Also, I thought it was going to be about Boston the band too.
― Kringelbert Fishtybuns of Steel (ENBB), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 22:03 (fifteen years ago) link
Me too, I didn't even open the thread til now because of it! I probably would've voted for the Pixies anyway.
And moaned about the Freeze and Jerry's Kids not being on it.
― I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 22:06 (fifteen years ago) link
I was disappointed when I opened this and it wasn't about Boston, the band! I was all ready to stand up for "Don't Look Back" against "More Than A Feeling."
Anyway, good winners, but Magnetic Fields are notably missing and would have drawn some votes surely...?
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 22:29 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, this poll really should have had a lot more votes, period. I voted Pixies, though.
― Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Thursday, 23 April 2009 03:56 (fifteen years ago) link
was i the only one who voted modern lovers? u all crazy
― domma sonner (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 April 2009 03:57 (fifteen years ago) link
Haha, you and Alex must have split your vote! ;)

"Bill Magill, always such a delight."
I will admit that I am totally guilty of what I criticized ENBB for, so the criticism was probably unfair.
I vote Foreplay/Long Time.

was i the only one who voted modern lovers mission of burma? u all crazy
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 23 April 2009 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

As much as I like the Pixies, would I be tarred & feathered (more so than usual) to opine that they're somewhat slavishly overrated?
― Alex in NYC, Thursday, 23 April 2009 18:19 (fifteen years ago) link
I agree, but I don't think there'd be a ton of people lining up to join the club.
― some dude, Thursday, 23 April 2009 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link
i don't like the pixies v. much at all, not really sure why tho

DJ Steve Stanley, host of "The Now Sounds" on Luxuria Music Internet Radio interviews Bruce Arnold, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Howie Hersh and John Arnold of Orpheus. Show aired on April 18th, 2016.

kind of an interesting look into the bosstown sound, feat. producer alan lorber, bernard purdie (who i didn't realize is playing on the ultimate spinach records), and psych-pop group orpheus, including some early recordings of theirs as when they were known as the villagers.
― budo jeru, Monday, 28 September 2020 23:33 (three years ago) link
(lorber isn't among the interviewees, i just mean his work is discussed.)

Anyone know the late-80s early-90s Boston band The 360's? Less well known than anyone on this list, for sure, they're not on streaming services. Someone put one of their songs (below) on a mixtape for me in 1991 and I've always loved it. Kind of a more fun, female-fronted, neo-psych Smashing Pumpkins.

also looking back at this poll which i haven't thought about in 10 years and where the fuck is galaxie 500?
― call all destroyer, Friday, 18 June 2021 02:12 (two years ago) link
Not much turnout, but I have a feeling Aerosmith would do much better these days.
