I have no idea if the earpods sound any different because I never really used the old ones. I have a bluetooth receiver and a headphone amp at my work desk so nothing's changed, here.

afaict the "proprietary tech" is just a new bluetooth chip that they're the first-party provider for

it's using the exact same technology as all other bluetooth headphones on the market as far as streaming goes

saw somewhere that the airpods have the same drivers as the regular apple earbuds (i.e. they suck)

btw I figured out a cool hack, you can make the earpods more closed by putting your fingers over the little holes on the back #earpodhacks

This seems really weird. You'd think when dumping the headphone jack they'd go all-out on quality for the replacements (only to cheap out later of course).

Going for crap DACs and shitty drivers straight out the gate seems like basic arrogance here

I mean I think there was probably no way to fit a very good DAC into that tiny adapter, but more broadly, yeah I think it's arrogance. IMO they're just getting rid of the jack too early, before wireless options are good enough and widely adopted enough to make up for it.

BTW, how does the trade-in credit on a phone work on one of these financed phone plans? Do they reduce the size of the monthly payments?

imo good wireless options won't be widespread and reasonably-priced until there's a market push to drive that price down

Wireless will never be as good of course, is the thing. Bluetooth audio drops packets all the time.

That one is p galling. Hundred-year-old technologies that have managed to survive to today have usually done so because they're really good and not easy to replace with something better.

The credit is spread out over two years. So from what I understand you'll see a monthly phone finance charge of $27 or whatever on your bill for two years, along with a $27 credit which cancels it out.

(I'm assuming you're talking about the "free iPhone 7" thing mentioned upthread.)

yeah I was just looking at the options out there so far and it seems like most are either huge or usb

this is the first time i haven't been excited about upgrading after a couple of years.

the audio is bluetooth. it's the aac codec over bluetooth. it's in a bunch of devices. the only "special" bit is the proximity-based pairing, which apple kind of does w/appletv (sending settings over by holding your phone up by it) and a bunch of android devices do via one-off hacks, bluetooth, and nfc

are the best smartphone cases still otterboxes?

this is the first time i haven't been excited about upgrading after a couple of years.

only thing i'm excited for is the dual camera on the plus + software assisted portrait mode

I'm still gonna get it (7+) of course cos I'm a sucker, the camera upgrade is probably worth it alone but i really don't feel like I'm making a leap forward from my 6+

idk, almost all the bluetooth shit I have just works now. stuff was janky three or four years ago but now I have a couple random devices, a couple speakers, and my phone/laptop and it's very seldom that something doesn't automatically connect and just start working

xp my friend still likes that otterbox stuff and if by "best" you mean "I can chuck my phone down stairs, w/e" then i'm sure it's good. i'm still compromising between my own klutzy nature and not wanting to carry a large plastic brick with a phone embedded in it

the plus camera does seem really cool but I couldn't talk myself into the larger phone! maybe someday.

Used to be with the 2 year subsidized deals you were throwing away money by not upgrading after two years but yea now it makes less sense. i'm just gonna do it anyway though
