BTW, how does the trade-in credit on a phone work on one of these financed phone plans? Do they reduce the size of the monthly payments?

imo good wireless options won't be widespread and reasonably-priced until there's a market push to drive that price down

thanks apple for forcing the market, I guess? idk

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 16:36 (seven years ago) link

yeah that could be what they're going for I guess, and they can probably afford to take a little hit on one phone release if necessary to do so

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 16:51 (seven years ago) link

Wireless will never be as good of course, is the thing. Bluetooth audio drops packets all the time.

it is kind of funny i guess to see all the apple devotees adopt the "it's a 100-year-old technology! it's a dinosaur!" line so easily

marcos, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 16:55 (seven years ago) link

That one is p galling. Hundred-year-old technologies that have managed to survive to today have usually done so because they're really good and not easy to replace with something better.

Bicycles have been perfect for a century

depends what you're using them for

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:05 (seven years ago) link

Well if you're listening to music with them they're not great

is there any chance i wonder of apple continuing to offer a 5C or SE-style (e.g. cheaper and not as cutting edge) phone that still has the jack?

marcos, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:10 (seven years ago) link

I'm sure there's some silicon valley startup working on a chainless bike with chain metaphors abounding in their marketing materials

i mean i wish this was the case but it would be tantamount to admitting a mistake i guess

marcos, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:13 (seven years ago) link

If they keep the SE's industrial design the same and pop a new SoC into it every two years I will rebuy it ad infinitum.

me too

marcos, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:19 (seven years ago) link

BTW, how does the trade-in credit on a phone work on one of these financed phone plans?

The credit is spread out over two years. So from what I understand you'll see a monthly phone finance charge of $27 or whatever on your bill for two years, along with a $27 credit which cancels it out.

early rejecter, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link

(I'm assuming you're talking about the "free iPhone 7" thing mentioned upthread.)

early rejecter, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:21 (seven years ago) link

just talking about any trade-in credit on any monthly financed plan for any new phone.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

the new audio chip really works guys

just caught myself thinking about buying beats

it is a marketing success

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:38 (seven years ago) link

btw my trade-in dollar numbers were wrong

F♯ A♯ (∞), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:42 (seven years ago) link

mh: explain, is it the exact same shit as Bluetooth or isn't it?

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link

or are you just talking about the neat instant pairing thing

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:04 (seven years ago) link

think i'll hold off on this phone until a 3rd party comes up with a good DAC in a lightning -> 3.5mm adapter

龜, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:07 (seven years ago) link

yeah I was just looking at the options out there so far and it seems like most are either huge or usb

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:09 (seven years ago) link

this is the first time i haven't been excited about upgrading after a couple of years.

Spottie, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:19 (seven years ago) link

the audio is bluetooth. it's the aac codec over bluetooth. it's in a bunch of devices. the only "special" bit is the proximity-based pairing, which apple kind of does w/appletv (sending settings over by holding your phone up by it) and a bunch of android devices do via one-off hacks, bluetooth, and nfc

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:35 (seven years ago) link

are the best smartphone cases still otterboxes?

only thing i'm excited for is the dual camera on the plus + software assisted portrait mode

龜, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

I'm still gonna get it (7+) of course cos I'm a sucker, the camera upgrade is probably worth it alone but i really don't feel like I'm making a leap forward from my 6+

Spottie, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:40 (seven years ago) link

idk, almost all the bluetooth shit I have just works now. stuff was janky three or four years ago but now I have a couple random devices, a couple speakers, and my phone/laptop and it's very seldom that something doesn't automatically connect and just start working

xp my friend still likes that otterbox stuff and if by "best" you mean "I can chuck my phone down stairs, w/e" then i'm sure it's good. i'm still compromising between my own klutzy nature and not wanting to carry a large plastic brick with a phone embedded in it

the plus camera does seem really cool but I couldn't talk myself into the larger phone! maybe someday.

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:41 (seven years ago) link

i don't understand upgrading your phone unless your battery no longer holds charge, your screen is cracked or you get it for "free" (ha) from your provider.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:42 (seven years ago) link

trying to decide which way to go with the case

functional or nice looking

F♯ A♯ (∞), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link

caek, that is a good viewpoint, and a common one. thank you for your support.

exactly what the dude who fixed my iphone screen today said, fwiw

Used to be with the 2 year subsidized deals you were throwing away money by not upgrading after two years but yea now it makes less sense. i'm just gonna do it anyway though

agree personally but a lot of people just like newer stuff

marcos, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:51 (seven years ago) link

otm

Spottie, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:52 (seven years ago) link

eh a lot of us are probably happy with our provider/service, the price is "good enough" and yay shiny new phone that can actually run new apps again

Nhex, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:53 (seven years ago) link

imo it's like car ownership with some pattern of buying new/used, paying off, financing, owning until it dies/trading while there's residual value

some will make sense to you, some will have obvious financial pitfalls, but who even cares

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:54 (seven years ago) link

the right answer is to take the bus, obviously

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:55 (seven years ago) link

no totally whatever works for you! but now the insane 2 year contract thing is finally gone in the US i think more people should be thinking about whether it makes sense to keep upgrading.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

i don't undertand the 2 year thing i'm on rgiht now w/ verizon vs the 2 year thing that is gone

marcos, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

I think it's probably a threat to Apple's sales. I wasn't even aware of how it worked until I went in for the upgrade.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

Marcos assuming you switched to the "edge" plan the difference is that once you're done paying off your phone, your monthly bill will drop significantly, so there's no incentive to immediately upgrade again after two years.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

some people seem genuinely cheated that the hardware company they are not a direct customer of is not offering a more exciting new phone and i'm like, blame the company you actually contracted to upgrade your phone with and paid $2000 in total cost of ownership over the past two years.

don't get me wrong, i hate apple.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

planned obsolescence will keep people updating

upgraded to sierra when the gold master came out. really like it.

lol that review contains the one and only use case I can think of where I'd be interested in getting an Apple Watch
