the right answer is to take the bus, obviously

no totally whatever works for you! but now the insane 2 year contract thing is finally gone in the US i think more people should be thinking about whether it makes sense to keep upgrading.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

i don't undertand the 2 year thing i'm on rgiht now w/ verizon vs the 2 year thing that is gone

marcos, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

I think it's probably a threat to Apple's sales. I wasn't even aware of how it worked until I went in for the upgrade.

Marcos assuming you switched to the "edge" plan the difference is that once you're done paying off your phone, your monthly bill will drop significantly, so there's no incentive to immediately upgrade again after two years.

some people seem genuinely cheated that the hardware company they are not a direct customer of is not offering a more exciting new phone and i'm like, blame the company you actually contracted to upgrade your phone with and paid $2000 in total cost of ownership over the past two years.

don't get me wrong, i hate apple.

planned obsolescence will keep people updating

upgrading*

F♯ A♯ (∞), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:03 (seven years ago) link

nice!

upgraded to sierra when the gold master came out. really like it.

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:05 (seven years ago) link

lol that review contains the one and only use case I can think of where I'd be interested in getting an Apple Watch

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link

It makes emacs crash.

I've been upgrading every year while the resale value is good on the old phone, but this time it's more because I'm desperate to get away from the 6s. The battery life is atrocious (turned out to have a smaller battery than the 6!), the screen is dimmer (wtf) and generally it's a dud. Not massively happy about the 7 either tbh.

Honestly I think a 4s with a better camera would be my perfect phone.

stet, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link

if siri is going to be on macbooks it better have some information available about transparent aluminum

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:10 (seven years ago) link

is the 6S really confirmed to have a dimmer screen than the 6?

龜, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

Honestly I think a 4s with a better camera would be my perfect phone.

I've said about a billion times that the 4/4s generation was the last time I really loved a mobile phone.

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:12 (seven years ago) link

DJP, I know what you mean... and it works perfectly so far! (re: watch)

btw I used Apple Pay on a website last week and it was really weird

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:13 (seven years ago) link

is the 6S really confirmed to have a dimmer screen than the 6?

Yep. Will dig up a link later

stet, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:13 (seven years ago) link

I don't think I could go back to a 4s after having more screen space, but the 5 did feel like a weird stretched 4. The 4/4s size was so good.

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link

btw the screens on the 7 and the iPad Pro make me want to throw my desktop displays at work out the window into a flaming trashheap

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link

i go to a lot of places that accept apple pay but i'm not prepared to fully commit myself to it

i still want some division between my phone and banking/credit cards/finances

nerds: the iPhone 7 is a snoozer of an update
also nerds: where's the new macs

The big uh-uh for me with the EarPods is NO VOLUME CONTROL. Fuck going back to taking my phone out of my pocket or having to use SIRI. Apologies if this has already been ranted about.

Alba, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:28 (seven years ago) link

Airpods should have a voice control function where you have to yell "LOUDER!" "QUIETER!"

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:33 (seven years ago) link

Well they assume if you have AirPods you also have the watch I guess, so you adjust the volume on your watch.

the iPhone is just the base station of the growing Apple Personal Area Network, or something

ah ok i see

marcos, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:39 (seven years ago) link

I would probably buy an Apple Watch just to avoid having to use Siri.

Alba, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:39 (seven years ago) link

I went from a 5 to a 6+ because I was starting to do so much synthesis & midi composing on my phone that the extra finger space seemed really important. And it is great for that. But in all other ways I kind of hate having a big phone.

I wish you could see my home. It's... it's so... exciting (Jon not Jon), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:44 (seven years ago) link

does anybody know anybody who actually uses Siri? who is actually using Siri that they are investing so much money into it?

龜, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:53 (seven years ago) link

their entire brand working hard to encompass the common ground between ppl of different tastes and ethnicities

derailed by this one guy's summarizing that as a dripping Bono

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:54 (seven years ago) link

Bono is using Siri.

Alba, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:58 (seven years ago) link

I guess they must be investing money in Siri, but I can't see any evidence of it. I mean, it hasn't improved since launch as far as I can see. Just tried it again with one of the suggested applications (cinema times). It returned complete garbage as usual.

Alba, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:03 (seven years ago) link

i use siri to set timers while cooking and that's it

guys did you know AFP is now deprecated for everything except time machine over networks?

this 3 year old news done passed me by

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:12 (seven years ago) link

^^^huh, i've never thought of that, and that alone could actually make siri 1000% more useful to me

xp timer thing

jason waterfalls (gbx), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:12 (seven years ago) link

not surprised, smb is kind of the de facto standard and I'd imagine they're putting off changing time machine until the new filesystem rolls out next year

Clay, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link

can you type at siri on macos or do you still have to speak?

i feel like i'd end up using it much more on ios if i could learn my way around its capabilities more by typing on a mac, where it would presumably be faster to respond as well as quicker to command

as it is, occasionally i try new things and they don't work and i learn my lesson and never try again

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:14 (seven years ago) link

oh wait, 2013

so is time machine still using AFP? I would hazard a guess.... yeah

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:14 (seven years ago) link

this is full of ideas fwiw https://hey-siri.io/

xp. yes time capsule still uses AFP i spent this weekend hating it.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:15 (seven years ago) link

I think typing at siri is about the same as what you'd get typing in the OS-wide search dialog on iOS

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:15 (seven years ago) link

I use siri while sitting in traffic on the rare occasion

yeah i use it for in-phone commands; start a timer, set me a reminder (altho you have to be REALLY SPECIFIC), send texts, open apps, start an album etc. But asking it to do anything external is a no no

Spottie, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:39 (seven years ago) link

i took one for the team and visited an audiophile forum - people seem to agree that the lightning dongle provides better sound quality than the 6S

龜, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 21:39 (seven years ago) link

interesting, thanks for your efforts
