openstreetmap dudes

kind of hoping google buys twitter that way a lot of users jump ship because of not wanting to give google too much of their info
plus google has had many failed projects and i'm hoping this track record will help drive twitter down

OSM is a good group but I follow a handful of people connected to the project and they're really trying to position their efforts as far as getting people to volunteer to update things, block-by-block. They're really in the phase between being an enthusiast tool for data projects and being an enterprise-grade map provider for things like personal navigation

what i'm saying is flopson makes it sound like it's almost impossible to not use google maps' data set
there is osm for the hardcore users and apple maps uses tomtom's data
so there are a few main data sets that can be used and are being used

oh yeah it's definitely possible, I know a few companies use bing maps(hard to type that and not laugh)they apparently do have better maps in some rural areas and their licensing terms are better for some organizations

if you're paranoid going to another site is possible. just seems weird when googlemaps is already on my address bar, like i just have to type in an address
― flopson, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link
but.. if you set your default search engine to a difference site then you type in the address and get a different map service, lol
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:23 (seven years ago) link
like even Chrome, a Google product, lets you select other search engines as default
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:24 (seven years ago) link
heh. i guess i'm just comfy in default everything and never thought to change. it's nice :)
― flopson, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:27 (seven years ago) link

I'm used to changing because of whatever iOS version defaulted to some wack search by default. Did they go to bing when bing was bad? I forget.
― dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 21:31 (seven years ago) link
The iOS default changed to Bing, I think, but at the same time they added DuckDuckGo as an option.

ya i think it is bing
i use dolphin and i think it defaults to google
starting to use cesium instead of apple's music app too

The tortoise and the hare but instead it's you circling the same three blocks for eternity shrieking at Bing maps on your phone while i, who used googlemaps from my address line, cruise to the destination with time to spare. Then google sells my information for .0000001¢
― flopson, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 23:30 (seven years ago) link
so you're typing it into the address line on your laptop and then printing it or something or are you on a phone too? need full picture here

if u look at how theyve handled instagram theres good reason to think theyd keep them separate, which is what they shd do, under this wholly made up scenario
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 15:47 (seven years ago) link
Yes, thank goodness Instagram's completely separate from Facebook.

39 still seems to be way below what you need for retweet reach, so I'm still at the point where only replies get retweeted or favd more than 2x.

salesforce's benioff wants twitter

highlights for the googling-impaired:
Mr. Benioff, whose recent approach to Twitter set off the bidding process, sees the social-media pioneer as an “unpolished jewel” with untapped potential in advertising, e-commerce and other data-rich applications he regards as important to the cloud-software juggernaut’s next phase of growth, the people said.[...]“Data is the currency in software’s new world order,” he said in an interview this past weekend, though he wasn’t specifically speaking about Twitter. “I’m looking hard at unique data-rich companies and what I can do to make them more powerful and innovative if combined with Salesforce.”[...]Twitter could complement Mr. Benioff’s goal of harnessing more data for artificial-intelligence-driven analysis, as well as allow Salesforce to offer additional services in sales, marketing and e-commerce for the company’s 150,000 customers.[...]Salesforce already incorporates Twitter in numerous cloud services for its corporate customers, from service complaints handled through tweets to analysis of tweets on products.[...]

Salesforce already incorporates Twitter in numerous cloud services for its corporate customers, from service complaints handled through tweets to analysis of tweets on products.
basically twitter will turn into a customer support "line"
great news is salesforce is such garbage it will drown twitter with it once both of them disappear
