Well actually sports games is the one genre still better on PSXbox than PC.

lol Nintendo Switch is a terrible name
Looks kinda dope tho

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:11 (seven years ago) link

Name isn't so bad. Does look cool. But maybe that's just Zelda.

I'm totally on board, despite the pretty terrible name

CraigG, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:13 (seven years ago) link

trailer is v weird, thing itself looks p cool

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:17 (seven years ago) link

Switch is a little dumb but leagues better than Wii or WiiU or GameCube

Terrible trailer o_O

Like the thing tho.

so, hardware-wise it's a really neat nvidia shield?

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:33 (seven years ago) link

what does the core system come with tho? How much extra shit are they requiring me to buy?

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:33 (seven years ago) link

agreed on dumb name, cool looking device. not sure about the detachable controller nubs but i like the rest

also why make a trailer where people are doing more fun things they would probably rather be doing than playing video games

also the DS had awesome 3rd party support, what you smoking. Even the 3DS's third-party support is way better than their consoles

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:34 (seven years ago) link

I would guess it comes with the display/dock/controller wings and the standalone controller is extra?

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:38 (seven years ago) link

DS and 3DS have great Japanese 3rd party support yes, not western. Because this is also a portable I believe they'll be able to retain Japanese 3rd party support, further differentiating their lineup from the competition.

Vanagon cameo

calstars, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:43 (seven years ago) link

xp yeah I think the standalone controller is basically the Pro controller like on the Wii/U

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:43 (seven years ago) link

Just consolidating 1st party output to one device is pretty huge, hopefully this means more variety as they don't need to work on 2 Mario Kart games at once for example

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:49 (seven years ago) link

pending further information, i am into this. third party support is good from an adoption/longevity pov, Nintendo standards on a powerful handheld is cool (especially if it's more comfortably designed than the wii u tablet)

Cautious optimism

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 14:54 (seven years ago) link

Has it been confirmed that there's no touch? People are surprised there's no use of that in the trailer...

As I previously reported in my September 2nd post, Nintendo Switch is 100% region free.

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:07 (seven years ago) link

The people whose leaks have been most accurate e.g. Emily Rogers have been saying that it will be region free, and Iwata said on a few occasions that they were thinking about it. This console has got to have some big dumb thing wrong with it tho so it could be that :/

holding out for the big mario party announcement

nxd, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link

I'm going to end up having to buy two of these.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:31 (seven years ago) link

i was also surprised that apparently there's no touch-capability.

i haven't had a nintendo console since the wii (which i attempted to mod and ended up bricking within 2 years), but i'm not sure this is going to be the one.

the whole gimmick where you can transform it into a handheld and go off to the williamsburg party and play videogames on the rooftop at the bbq - that's kinda cool in theory but i know i would never do something like that. when i walk my dog in the early morning, i like to just sit on the bench and pay attention to her, i don't want to resume my dragon quest at that moment. and after getting beaten down IRL 2v2 basketball underneath a bustling highway, i know my bros aren't going to want to play nba 2k18 with me. they'll probably be mad at me for being bad at basketball irl, 15 minutes earlier. i don't play games on public transport either. i'm just not a handheld person, so i feel like the main purpose of the system design isn't aimed toward me.

kind of raisin' an eyebrow at the cartridge thing, although maybe these days cartridges can handle resource-intensive games? either way, i guess it has to be a cartridge so that you can Switch(tm) your game into mobile mode so you can level up while you're eating brunch and windsurfing in the afternoon.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:47 (seven years ago) link

whoooa, that came out way more negative than i meant it to be, sorry. i'm sure this will be a cool system and i will be jealous of all people getting to play the nintendo 1st party franchise sequels, for real.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:50 (seven years ago) link

solid state storage is fast in a way optical media will never be, and I get the impression that the Japanese market wouldn't be about a download-only platform. Also yeah carrying around an optical drive would work about as well as a discman.

idk i think the portability is actually pretty interesting/compelling. the best thing about the Xbox one right now is how it integrates into the windows 10 ecosystem. i can play it on my pc in my office, on my laptop in bed, or on the TV directly from the Xbox in the usual way. this limited portability is pretty awesome, and extending the possibility to take the game with you anywhere is a logical extension and seems pretty cool. Xps

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:54 (seven years ago) link

yeh I play handhelds mostly at home, in bed etc. playing an Atlus game while cycling is on TV is my jam!

I would like to see all the cables involved for connectivity ie power/recharging etc

The WiiU is a monster for too many cables, I don't want to go through that again.

"Stop researching my life" (Ste), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:14 (seven years ago) link

oh is that a thing? like, via remote desktop or something? this makes me pretty glad i don't have an xbox.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:14 (seven years ago) link

It will have a multi-touch screen. That's semi-confirmed (again from Emily Rogers' so far 100% correct fact sheet)

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:23 (seven years ago) link

xp there's a windows 10 app that lets you stream games which is basically, as you say, a remote desktop thing. supposedly you can also set up your home router to allow you to access your Xbox from anywhere with internet but i haven't tried this

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:27 (seven years ago) link

how do you do this???

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:25 (seven years ago) link

the big difference in multiplayer between this and the other new 2-D Marios is that the characters are basically transparent. so you jump through each other instead of getting in each other's way. though you can jump on top of the Yoshis which sometimes gets irritating on the tougher levels. but yea multiplayer is a lot 'easier' so to speak. I always wondered if the other ones made it obnoxious on purpose to cover for the fact that multiplayer is kind of cheating, since you can endlessly respawn

we're only halfway through yet but yeah I don't think the main game is too hard. all the really difficult stuff is optional. also I think this game put a lot of care into making sections that look crazy and difficult but actually aren't too bad. I think a 7 year old could do it.

frogbs, Wednesday, 20 December 2023 14:52 (three months ago) link

There's two playable characters who don't take any damage (will die if they get crushed or fall offscreen though), my 8 year old daughter plays with them and loves the game.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 20 December 2023 19:02 (three months ago) link

its cool how theyve found clever ways to have easy modes more incorporated into games, special characters, stuff that comes "after" winning

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 December 2023 19:05 (three months ago) link

its funny there was so much complaining when it was revealed that one of the semi-recent Mario games would have a feature where Luigi would 'help' you if you died enough times, basically making it so anyone could finish the game. I think a lot of people felt that you only deserved to beat a game if you had enough skill. I guess I get that but man, just thinking back to all the NES/SNES games I rented where we were basically stuck at Level 2 or 3 because the difficultly ramped up so much, and how much stuff was probably in those games that their most dedicated players probably never even got to see because they were just kids.

frogbs, Wednesday, 20 December 2023 19:56 (three months ago) link

lol so many nes games were impossible just cause they were bad

^me and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Wednesday, 20 December 2023 20:26 (three months ago) link

that's definitely true but I always suspected a big part of the reason was you only had so much space and developers didn't want their games to be beaten in an hour so they compensated by making them super hard

frogbs, Wednesday, 20 December 2023 20:48 (three months ago) link

yeah just a mindset descended from arcade games where the design goal was to eat quarters

ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 December 2023 21:47 (three months ago) link

in retrospect pretty funny how the goal of the gamer back in those days was to outsmart the developer and figure out which moves you could spam or what corner you could hide in to trick the CPU

frogbs, Wednesday, 20 December 2023 21:59 (three months ago) link

xp this design for insane arcade difficulty was always stupid for home consoles. every Mario game had cheat codes/warps built in so you could beat the game in 5 minutes if you wanted!

Nhex, Thursday, 21 December 2023 16:00 (three months ago) link

It wasn't necessarily an intentional mindset just something inherent in the beginning due to that reason.

Evan, Thursday, 21 December 2023 17:36 (three months ago) link

old game difficulty was goosed to sell magazines and 900 number tip lines to children.

Natural Wine • Danny Devito • Virginia (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 21 December 2023 17:40 (three months ago) link

But it created the game genie market, which then converted the beautiful game hardware forms into a grotesque amd shameful monument to "winning".

Natural Wine • Danny Devito • Virginia (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 21 December 2023 17:43 (three months ago) link

you plug a cartridge into the genie, insert the hybrid mass into the mouth of your games machine, and now your basement is Moreau's Island

Natural Wine • Danny Devito • Virginia (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 21 December 2023 17:50 (three months ago) link

how exactly did the Game Genie work? my understanding is all it did was mess around with some commarea that held global variables, so for whoever was creating the Game Genie it was just a matter of figuring out which hex value got you to the hardcoded number of lives or timer speed or whatever

one thing I remember is the 'unofficial' Game Genie guides, which would include some very bizarre 'cheats'. you remember that dude in Mortal Kombat who would pop out of the corner and yell "Toasty"? you could actually play at that guy! well...sort of. your character would just be that animation, you could move around but I think as soon as you hit punch the game would freeze.

frogbs, Thursday, 21 December 2023 18:00 (three months ago) link

yeah it just messed with the memory, the codes were basically memory addresses

ciderpress, Thursday, 21 December 2023 18:04 (three months ago) link

I’ve returned to Super Mario Wonder over my holiday break. I put some hours into it when it was first released, mostly just sprinting through levels, not spending much time soaking it in.

Taking more time with it now, replaying levels to catch stuff I’d missed, seeking out overlooked Wonder Flowers (maybe the best mechanic introduced into a Mario game imo).

Found the secret world (optional) with genuinely gnarly and difficult levels. Celeste-y. Beat a few by the skin of my teeth, saving the rest for after I clear the main game.

If you can play it on a proper TV and use a Pro controller, do it obv. Improved my experience immensely. It looks gorgeous and the joy cons just do not cut it for precise platforming.

Anyway. I think this is my favorite Mario game. More of this please.

I guess this is where the Mario chat is? My kids have been obsessed with Mario for the past year or so, we don't have a Switch yet but because I said 'we're not getting a Switch this Christmas' they think they're getting one next Christmas...hmmm

Anyway they have been playing old Wii games, New SMB (thought this was too difficult to start with but 9yo has gotten really good), and Super Paper Mario, which I played when it came out and have really enjoyed revisiting - it's made my kid a decent player. They're on SM Galaxy now. Have been watching player videos of SM Wonder which is giving them their fix for now too.

power went out last night so after the kids went to bed the only thing to do was play Mario Wonder. I know it's been said a lot ITT but holy hell is it a great game. I have always thought Mario at its best was kind of a psychedelic experience and this game is just nothing but that. so many clever things going on in each level. also kind of the perfect difficulty, I think Nintendo has figured out that games shouldn't be too difficult to beat but should offer legitimate challenges for those who want to see everything
