The people whose leaks have been most accurate e.g. Emily Rogers have been saying that it will be region free, and Iwata said on a few occasions that they were thinking about it. This console has got to have some big dumb thing wrong with it tho so it could be that :/

holding out for the big mario party announcement

nxd, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link

I'm going to end up having to buy two of these.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:31 (seven years ago) link

i was also surprised that apparently there's no touch-capability.

i haven't had a nintendo console since the wii (which i attempted to mod and ended up bricking within 2 years), but i'm not sure this is going to be the one.

the whole gimmick where you can transform it into a handheld and go off to the williamsburg party and play videogames on the rooftop at the bbq - that's kinda cool in theory but i know i would never do something like that. when i walk my dog in the early morning, i like to just sit on the bench and pay attention to her, i don't want to resume my dragon quest at that moment. and after getting beaten down IRL 2v2 basketball underneath a bustling highway, i know my bros aren't going to want to play nba 2k18 with me. they'll probably be mad at me for being bad at basketball irl, 15 minutes earlier. i don't play games on public transport either. i'm just not a handheld person, so i feel like the main purpose of the system design isn't aimed toward me.

kind of raisin' an eyebrow at the cartridge thing, although maybe these days cartridges can handle resource-intensive games? either way, i guess it has to be a cartridge so that you can Switch(tm) your game into mobile mode so you can level up while you're eating brunch and windsurfing in the afternoon.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:47 (seven years ago) link

whoooa, that came out way more negative than i meant it to be, sorry. i'm sure this will be a cool system and i will be jealous of all people getting to play the nintendo 1st party franchise sequels, for real.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:50 (seven years ago) link

solid state storage is fast in a way optical media will never be, and I get the impression that the Japanese market wouldn't be about a download-only platform. Also yeah carrying around an optical drive would work about as well as a discman.

(a discman that needed to stream textures to the GPU without skipping.)

idk i think the portability is actually pretty interesting/compelling. the best thing about the Xbox one right now is how it integrates into the windows 10 ecosystem. i can play it on my pc in my office, on my laptop in bed, or on the TV directly from the Xbox in the usual way. this limited portability is pretty awesome, and extending the possibility to take the game with you anywhere is a logical extension and seems pretty cool. Xps

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 15:54 (seven years ago) link

yeh I play handhelds mostly at home, in bed etc. playing an Atlus game while cycling is on TV is my jam!

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:00 (seven years ago) link

Kind of funny that there were no kids in that video, unless I missed something.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:06 (seven years ago) link

I think the average age of someone playing video games is now around 30

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:07 (seven years ago) link

goin' for chill hipster demo?

Nhex, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:07 (seven years ago) link

going for that disposable income demo for sure

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:11 (seven years ago) link

I would like to see all the cables involved for connectivity ie power/recharging etc

The WiiU is a monster for too many cables, I don't want to go through that again.

"Stop researching my life" (Ste), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:14 (seven years ago) link

i can play it on my pc in my office,

oh is that a thing? like, via remote desktop or something? this makes me pretty glad i don't have an xbox.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:14 (seven years ago) link

It will have a multi-touch screen. That's semi-confirmed (again from Emily Rogers' so far 100% correct fact sheet)

abcfsk, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:23 (seven years ago) link

xp there's a windows 10 app that lets you stream games which is basically, as you say, a remote desktop thing. supposedly you can also set up your home router to allow you to access your Xbox from anywhere with internet but i haven't tried this

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:27 (seven years ago) link

You can do that with the PS4 as well, but I haven't used it any further away than a laptop on the same wifi

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:28 (seven years ago) link

looks cool

wish i had the desire/time to get back into games

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:32 (seven years ago) link

yeah if you could just go into a hotel or a friend's apartment & hook this up to play on the tv, w/o anything complex, that would be terrific.

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 20 October 2016 16:52 (seven years ago) link

that's actually a good point

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:11 (seven years ago) link

ugh new mario looks DREADFUL. they have turned him into a little blond girl with pointy ears running thru the countryside. too far SJWs too fucking far

You guys want a thread title change?

mod, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:21 (seven years ago) link

yeh that would help.
the battery life on this thing is going to be terrible isn't it?

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:24 (seven years ago) link

You can do that with the PS4 as well, but I haven't used it any further away than a laptop on the same wifi

how do you do this???

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:25 (seven years ago) link

https://remoteplay.dl.playstation.net/remoteplay/

mh 😏, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:30 (seven years ago) link

you've just changed my life. the biggest impediment to ps4 gaming is that my kids are always using the tv.

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:32 (seven years ago) link

Changed title to just 'The Nintendo Switch', lmk if you want a ref to the NX in there still.

mod, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:34 (seven years ago) link

for some reason i didn't know you could remote play outside the vita, this is good info. @mordy, from my experience doing this on the Xbox it's an awesome feature of the current gen that i wouldn't give for anything. it's rad to know everyone is proceeding on the assumption that portability is a necessary feature

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:38 (seven years ago) link

Mordy, the vita really does the trick well ime

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:40 (seven years ago) link

it works well for some games for sure, but if you need the r2/l2 buttons regularly it's kind of a chore ime

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:41 (seven years ago) link

some games also seem to have developed better control schemes for working w vita than others so it may be a game by game basis kind of thing

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:42 (seven years ago) link

but do i need the vita if i use this software? i think i'd prefer to play on my big macbook retina screen anyway

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:44 (seven years ago) link

nah, macbook will likely work better for you if you're a laptop in bed kinda guy

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:45 (seven years ago) link

you will probably become that guy, given the opportunity

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:48 (seven years ago) link

ipad / home office / no children have thus far led to me not being that guy but life is long

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Thursday, 20 October 2016 17:54 (seven years ago) link

so does remote play only work over the wi-fi or could i set it up to access from anywhere?

Mordy, Thursday, 20 October 2016 20:32 (seven years ago) link

On the PS4? Yeah, I'm pretty sure you can remote play over the internet if you're away from home. The PS4 has to be in standby with the 'wake for network activity' (or whatever it's called) enabled, so you can wake it with the remote play request.

CraigG, Thursday, 20 October 2016 21:43 (seven years ago) link

So the list of commitments for 3rd party support is already awesome. I cannot wait to play a new DQ on this. And Terraria! I bet they'll have Terraria for this. I'm going to have to buy a headset thingy with the microphone and everything.

Our Wii U (with Kart and Smash Bros) sits idle while my 9-year-olds play Geometry Dash and slither.io on the tablets. IDGI.

Remote Play is good but will drag ass if ppl are streaming video. I would still get one anyway in your situation though as the Vita has tons of games worthy of your attention.

re: the Switch, the fact that it's not going to be BC with any previous games is making me want to hold off from buying at launch. REALLY hoping they don't make me rebuy all the digital shit I've bought over the years, although previous efforts on Nintendo's part in this regard are not encouraging.

thos beads (jamescobo), Sunday, 23 October 2016 02:16 (seven years ago) link

They will absolutely make us rebuy it, and we will, because we are weak.

slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby), Sunday, 23 October 2016 02:39 (seven years ago) link

It totally makes me feel great about my decision to have not bothered with any Nintendo digital shit since 2007 or so!

El Tomboto, Sunday, 23 October 2016 04:27 (seven years ago) link

Their digital system has been garbage for a long time, was hoping for this system they'd finally implement multi-system buys like Steam/XBL/PSN.
No backwards compatibility makes me sad as well and makes this a lot of less of a slam dunk for me. Probably gonna be a year or two before whatever version of Smash Bros comes out anyway....

Nhex, Sunday, 23 October 2016 05:28 (seven years ago) link

I generally like the pro controller but it doesn’t quite hit the sport for side scrolling or platformers. I should try the SNES one.

Jeff, Wednesday, 3 January 2024 14:35 (three months ago) link

Wait, I have to have a Nintendo online membership to use it??

Jeff, Wednesday, 3 January 2024 14:36 (three months ago) link

just buy a 3rd party snes style controller, 8bitdo makes them

ciderpress, Wednesday, 3 January 2024 14:44 (three months ago) link

i got my son the 8bitdo controller that is basically a souped up snes controller with all the pro buttons, it’s great

polyamerie "it's more than this 1 thing" (m bison), Wednesday, 3 January 2024 15:43 (three months ago) link

agree that the 8bitdo SN30 controller is great

c u (crüt), Wednesday, 3 January 2024 15:55 (three months ago) link

at least for SNES games & games that use the d-pad for movement. the pro controller is probably better for games that use the left analog stick.

c u (crüt), Wednesday, 3 January 2024 15:58 (three months ago) link

the sn30 is flat like a snes controller htats the one i was thinking of but that looks good too

ciderpress, Wednesday, 3 January 2024 17:22 (three months ago) link

power went out last night so after the kids went to bed the only thing to do was play Mario Wonder. I know it's been said a lot ITT but holy hell is it a great game. I have always thought Mario at its best was kind of a psychedelic experience and this game is just nothing but that. so many clever things going on in each level. also kind of the perfect difficulty, I think Nintendo has figured out that games shouldn't be too difficult to beat but should offer legitimate challenges for those who want to see everything

frogbs, Sunday, 14 January 2024 05:53 (three months ago) link

every stage is touch fuzzy get dizzy

formerly abanana (dat), Sunday, 14 January 2024 06:44 (three months ago) link

Reminds me a lot of the more psychedelic levels that people created on Mario Maker.

Jeff, Sunday, 14 January 2024 11:48 (three months ago) link

three weeks pass...

well we finally beat it. final boss battle was great. credits sequence somehow even cooler. there's just so much stuff in this game.
