Michael warns me "Stay away from the light". I don't acknowledge him at first and end up scalding my skin from the radioactive blasts from the ethers of the netherworld. I try once more with the same effect. I succumb.

Michael,

Bossa Nova Hotel is without question the hippest west coast album on the planet bar none! If there was only one album to sum up the spirit and vibe of the whole Southern California FM laid back experience - this album captures it bottom line. Excellent website and hope to see you giggin' around L.A soon.

Hey Michael,

Hope you're well and happy.
It's my 24th birthday tomorrow, and thought I would treat myself to some of your music.

What's up with that "maniac" song all of a sudden?
I haven't heard about it for ever and suddenly there is this thread + last tuesday this guy http://www.hedonist-materialism.com/images/postdragqueen.jpg closed his set with it. I'm worried, is there such a thing as a hipster illuminati inner circle that I should know about?

Hey, Michael,

I wonder if you would allow me to cut your song 'Maniac'. I'm producing the legendary Flip Wilson & he wants to do this song with his 'Geraldine' character for his new dance cd. She has a thing with water & welding & some other issues I'm not privy to at the moment. but, you know that this means a sincere performance, just as it was written, a steamy jacuzzi reading per se.
I have the charts worked out, which I can forward to you (one note at a time) & you are certainly welcome to play (replay, fly in) the solo gtr on this recording. (Logic Multi-paltinum 9.44.01 preferred for Linux)
This is a great opportunity, being Flip's swan song & telling (all)at that. He wants to go 'out' on this, your note, & I can't agree more!
Do not dilly dally or even dilly Dolly with Geraldine! Time is of the essence.
What's the word, Mr. Sembello?

Can we talk for a second about the lyrics to "Maniac"? Without really knowing anything about Michael Sembello yesterday, I guessed that he might be from Italy and that the language barrier would explain just how odd and beyond comprehensibility these lyrics are. But no, he's from Philly. THERE'S NO EXCUSE.

philadelphia IS a strange town.

crate diggers take note: there are at least TWO different record covers of sembello's epochal _bossa nova hotel_. the first (and i'm guessing original) looks like this:

http://www.bluedesert.dk/cd3cm/sembello/bossa.JPG

that's michael behind the desk on the right in black/white face reading a godzilla comic. then there are two oiled-up pieces of beefcake rising off the floor (?), a dark one in a speedo with a huge shiny log-chain around his neck (??), the blond one in a sumo-diaper thing and what looks like christ's spear wound on his ribs (???). michael is on the back side in white shorts similarly floating off the floor with two suitcases.

the second (i'm guessing, for gay-squeaming audiences) puts the floating-suitcase michael on the front cover, and EXCISES COMPLETELY the stigmata-chain-diaper-south-beach-titty-tan-angels. so don't get that one!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:38 (eighteen years ago) link

the movie linked to seems like it's gotta be a comedy... like there's even jokes and stuff in it! but the rest of the site, and people's reactions on this thread, make it seem totally serious. so i am confused.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:39 (eighteen years ago) link

i think the movie WANTS to be humorous, but it's unironic in ways perhaps sembello and howard don't even realize.

a collectivist romantic fling! (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 May 2005 03:18 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean it's definitely... jokey. and ron howard is def'ly acting like he's in a comedy.
