the UK pricing.... fucking ouch

a hard brexit

mh 😏, Thursday, 27 October 2016 18:58 (seven years ago) link

imo the marketing on the website saying "connect two 5K displays and two RAID arrays!" makes me think the interim plan is to ignore the desktop world completely and go full laptop

mh 😏, Thursday, 27 October 2016 18:59 (seven years ago) link

the strip is so dumb

marcos, Thursday, 27 October 2016 19:02 (seven years ago) link

Agree. Too small to be useful

calstars, Thursday, 27 October 2016 19:25 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I guessed plan was for no standalone pros any longer as well. I did think they might do a standalone key board with bar though.

Fuck that pricing is killer though.

stet, Thursday, 27 October 2016 19:35 (seven years ago) link

Don't see it that way. The buttons w Ike's labels on my Wacom tablet are useful. I see this as a better version if that. As somehow who often can't remember which function key does what in various programs, that alone is useful.

dan selzer, Thursday, 27 October 2016 19:36 (seven years ago) link

The bar seems gimmicky. I like the touch ID part.

schwantz, Thursday, 27 October 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

They have hiked the decrepit Mac Pro by Β£500!

stet, Thursday, 27 October 2016 19:45 (seven years ago) link

that strip looks like those touch-thermometers that you're supposed to apply to your kid's head in order to read temperature, that never work correctly and that I always throw away

maximum system memory is 16 GB

my work machine has 48 GB of GRAPHICS memory

very curious to see what machine apple engineers will use in the future

Allen (etaeoe), Thursday, 27 October 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

how can they be selling new "pro" machines w 8GB of memory

how

http://www.avclub.com/article/apple-isnt-including-standard-usb-ports-its-new-ma-244981

Debuted in 2014, USB-C is designed to be β€œfuture-proof,” resistant to changing technical whims. (We’re sure Apple engineers will crack that problem, too, though, given enough time.)

perfect

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 28 October 2016 00:40 (seven years ago) link

although i agree that old usb needs to go

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 28 October 2016 00:40 (seven years ago) link

i like that you can't charge your iphone from the new macbook lol

龜, Friday, 28 October 2016 00:42 (seven years ago) link

and the lack of a lightning port for those new earbuds is... interesting

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 28 October 2016 00:52 (seven years ago) link

The bar looks awesome--the function keys are very much ripe for disruption and doing it this way makes a lot of sense. So does putting fingerprint ID on the keyboard.

System RAM on anything calling itself a "pro" should be 16GB and expandable to 32GB minimum. Storage needs continue to ebb away but the need for more RAM over time hasn't dissipated in the past 25 years.

Who the fuck is in charge of Apple TV?

Brevs Mekis (dandydonweiner), Friday, 28 October 2016 01:11 (seven years ago) link

the lightning/earbuds this is a non starter unless you only own and love the new iPhone earbuds because they're obviously only wired as a coat cutting measure. ppl are like "you want us to buy lightning headphones and no lightning port!!" But Apple really isn't releasing, and is not now encouraging, lighting headphones. They're 100% on wireless with a quick charge option, which works fine with laptops

mh 😏, Friday, 28 October 2016 01:37 (seven years ago) link

*cost cutting, coat switching

mh 😏, Friday, 28 October 2016 01:38 (seven years ago) link

very interested in the future of final cut pro and logic pro. deep neural networks have completely upended signal processing and apple has not shipped a decent gpu in years.

Allen (etaeoe), Friday, 28 October 2016 02:30 (seven years ago) link

I don't know why people have such an issue w/ Apple TV. I have the new one and it's pretty great.

dan selzer, Friday, 28 October 2016 02:46 (seven years ago) link

It is pretty great but its development hasn't ever been heartfelt or driven by much vision. Better the past few years I suppose.

sure, but there are people who've invested in lightning headphones, and there'll be grandpas who'll buy an iphone 7 and macbook pro together but will have nowhere to insert their headphones. it's not prohibitive but apple's certainly setting an expectation and failing to meet it (never once have i received pack-in headphones that won't plug into the company's other devices).

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 28 October 2016 03:48 (seven years ago) link

and the charger for those airpods is lightning, so that's another dongle/cable required there too

stet, Friday, 28 October 2016 09:58 (seven years ago) link

Apple is being drowned by the success of the iPhone. They can't ship the iPhone with a USB-C cable because 99.5% of their massive customer base wouldn't be able to use it. Yet they're not willing to hold ~back~ the Mac from USB-C heaven. So they've fractured what used to be their USP of everything just working together.

I mean, all this was a historical aberration anyway. The original vision for the Mac was something not far off the iPad β€” it was when it tanked as a general consumer product they grabbed on to creative pros as a lifeline. Now they don't need those guys, is it any wonder their conception of "pro" seems frozen somewhere around about 2007?

Question from David: The lack of a 32GB BTO option for the new MBPs raised some eyebrows and caused some concerns (me included). Does ~3GBps bandwidth to the SSD make this a moot issue? I.e. memory paging on a 16GB system is so fast that 32GB is not a significant improvement?

Schiller's answer: Thank you for the email. It is a good question. To put more than 16GB of fast RAM into a notebook design at this time would require a memory system that consumes much more power and wouldn't be efficient enough for a notebook. I hope you check out this new generation MacBook Pro, it really is an incredible system.

lol

龜, Friday, 28 October 2016 18:18 (seven years ago) link

that last sentence is great

mh 😏, Friday, 28 October 2016 18:19 (seven years ago) link

Seems like my plan to eventually use a laptop as my main work computer, so I could untether myself from my desk and travel during busier production periods, is becoming less likely.

lol

No Power Extension Cable: In line with the 12-inch MacBook, new MacBook Pro models do not come with Apple's Power Adapter Extension Cable in the box. Previous MacBook Pro models included the extension cable in the box for several years. The extension cable, which provides extra length between the power brick and wall outlet, can be purchased as a standalone product for $19.

All the stuff around the iPhone and the MBP plus the way iPads have been going make me picture Cook as completely neurotic and disorganized behind closed doors.

where do you go when yours is the world's most valuable brand and shareholders are screaming for more? you go cray-cray and hike your prices
