CPL doesn't have it -- that's why I ordered it from Amazon. You can borrow the book, though, or maybe I'll just Xerox that chapter.

Yaaaaay. Thanks!

I just helped a young Korean-American named Phil.

Aha. Does he wear a sailor's cap and cartoon-printed neckerchiefs?

Ha.

Afraid not, but I wish he had been.

So I just approached a group of three coworkers, all huddled together gossiping, so I could ask where another coworker was because I had a call on hold for her. One of them turns around and says, Hey, Sarah! Do you want to order from Potbelly? And before I can open my mouth, right in front of me, another one says, Wait wait wait a second. We should not offer anyone else lunch, because we're always the ones who have to go pick it up. Someone else should be doing that for a change. Then they all look back at me. I throw my hands up. Well, I don't have a car at work, as you know, but I don't want Potbelly anyway. Thanks for asking.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry, still thinking about the Captain and Tennille. Look at how smooth that mofo is. He's so totally the captain of her heart.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Also note that I NEVER ORDER LUNCH.

Anywho, I am going to see a physical therapist today and I get to leave work early. :-D

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Songs played every single day on the high school jukebox:

Bobby Darin, "Beyond the Sea"
Blue Oyster Cult, "Don't Fear the Reaper"
that one Bob Marley song
Gn'R, "Patience"
Gn'R, "You Could Be Mine"
Duran Duran, "Electric Barbarella"

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Someone has to DRIVE to pick up lunch? Weird. Doesn't that person lose, like, 20 mins of lunch break? Or does she just chalk it up to the good of the group and extend her lunch period?

I'm being a little disingenuous, I guess, but do lunch places not deliver?

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Not to mention there is a Potbelly's like every 200 yards in the Loop. But who wants to eat that shit anyway?

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I wish I could have gone to a Rock n Roll high school.

Some lunch places deliver, but it generally takes so long to get a delivery that people prefer to just have it picked up.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

You had a freakin' JUKEBOX? We didn't have a jukebox! All we had were reconstituted mashed potatoes, and this oddly humiliating food they called "pizza".

By the way, I have taken to putting punctuation outside of the quote marks, Britishes style. If you think about it, it makes more sense.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, honestly, I think they'd prefer to just pick a place for pick up because if they had it delivered, more people would want to order. This way they can remain cliqueish. WE'RE eating Potbelly today...

I'm sounding nasty.

I'll be dining on a PBH, triscuits, and an apple.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Sarah, your coworkers seem to suck a lot. Do you ever feel like getting passive aggressive towards them? Just curious.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Kenan, as long as your style is consistent, it's cool with me.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

"high school jukebox"
"swimming pool"

I swear to God Kr said something the other day like "My high school wasn't that well-off. We didn't even have a field hockey team, just lacrosse."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I had a jukebox too! But they took it away after freshman year. Then we were reduced to listening to the plaintive mewling of tiny, aching, teenage hearts.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Kenan, I agree re quotes. I usually do Brit style online and for personal stuff, but at work someone would probably notice and think I was just stupid. Someone like my boss. And then scold me for it, in public. Which is more headache than I need, ever.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

If you think about it, it makes more sense.

Bah.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Jukebox: no
Pizza: yes
Swimming Pool: yes, but in the "new building"
Ubiquitous Channel 1 TV sets: yes

My high school has a wikipedia entry, for some reason.

i don't remember high school but i'm sure i would have remembered a juke box. i know as a senior i'd leave for lunch every day.

xpost- i've always done that with the quotes and didn't realize it was "wrong". and the swimming pool in our hs was always on the 3rd floor which, structurally speaking, should've been a dead giveaway.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:05 (seventeen years ago) link

We had a natatorium with an olympic-sized pool. And of course a big Texas-style football stadium. And basketball courts. And tennis courts. Honestly, there was as much sporting area as there was learning area.

Ha, we had this joke, too.

My high school doesn't have a Wikipedia entry, but Kr's does.

We had "Moonbase" pods where various nerds lived for a week in a simulated outer space environment.

BEAT THAT.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

i've always done that with the quotes and didn't realize it was "wrong".

It's only wrong if you're American. The rule everywhere else in the world is that if the quotes contain a complete sentence, then the punctuation goes inside of them, but otherwise the quotes are only setting off a word or a phrase, so it is still the sentence that should be punctuated, not the word or phrase. Simple.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Well done on the British-style punctuation. If punctuating like that looks wrong, I don't wanna be right. Which is just as well.

I am excited about the whole Thirsty Thursday, which it seems is likely to be at a convenient location for me. I wish I was going to be there this Thursday, but I have to be at boring old work. In London. Ugh.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

BOO HOO. Where is TT again? I missed the location.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:11 (seventeen years ago) link

our hs was built in the mid-70s, a shining example of the collosal failure that was the "open concept" of learning. this "school without walls" (literally) was a disaster from a learning/teaching standpoint. it was like going to school in a warehouse with classrooms being nothing more than areas sectioned off with blackboards on wheels. god help you if you were next to one of the typing classes (i'm old enough to remember when typewriters were an integral part of the classroom). my favorite memory was being in spanish II with a mouse-voiced teacher. on the other side of the blackboard was intro to german. the german teacher was 3 feet behind me, my spanish teacher was 50 feet in front of me. a kid who sat next to me answered "guttentag" on a vocabulary quiz.

i hated mhs.

i could very easily be talked into a thirsty tuesday if anyone is up for it.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

(xpost) Ah, I think several schools in our district were like that in the late 70s/early 80s, but it had been phased out by the time I entered kindergarten.

I will not be able to attend TT until Sept. 28.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

actually, i just remembered a friend is coming by tonight so ixnay on the inksdray.

Check it out: my former learning compound, fitness resort, and detention center. This place is giant-sized. Nearly 10,000 students.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Old Timer's, 75 E. Lake St. is the location for TT, barring any suitably proposed and approved venue change.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

my high school was well off but we had no jukebox.

I swear to God Kr said something the other day like "My high school wasn't that well-off. We didn't even have a field hockey team, just lacrosse."

i thought that field hockey was an east coast thing.

i never knew that was british punctuation. i do that with quotes as well, because it looks stupid and incorrect otherwise.

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I had suggested the Whirlaway for TT.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:24 (seventeen years ago) link

my hs didn't have lax, only the private prep schools and some of the more well-heeled publics had it. i used to LOOOOOOVE watching field hockey. lots of girls in plaid skirts running and sweating and grunting... a little of that does wonders when you're 17.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think I'm allowed to follow anything but UCP style.

xpost: Oh shit, I missed that!

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

My high school caf had a jukebox and some tool played Metallica's "One" EVERY DAY FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR.

Guess what was playing in the car when I started it this morning?

I don't get the "joke" about the swimming pool being on the 3rd floor. Explain. (The swimming pool at UNCG is on the 2nd or 3rd floor.)

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:26 (seventeen years ago) link

well, in my particular hs there was no pool. so you were sending someone on a fools errand. on top of that, if you take a second to think about how much a pool full of water weighs you'd realize it's not going to be above ground level, let alone the 3rd floor.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:28 (seventeen years ago) link

And now, in violation of my own standards.....

...girls and fucked 'em at school
All I know is that
There were rumours he was into field hockey players
There were rumours
- So he applied basically
- He was gone the next day
- And went off with the team
- It's like - he was got - they'd just like
It was like so hush hush
They were so... quiet about it
And then the next thing you know...

Pixies - "I'm Amazed"

(not technically lyrics!

Malarky. UNCG's probably Olympic-sized pool is on the 2nd or 3rd floor. Hotels have pools on high floors.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:33 (seventeen years ago) link

There was a teacher at my school who was into volleyball players... one in particular. He was caught making out with her in the Physics classroom supply closet. I think they're actually married now.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

UNCG's probably Olympic-sized pool is on the 2nd or 3rd floor. Hotels have pools on high floors.

how many public high schools do you know are funded at the same level as a university or hotel? one look at the 6" concrete slab floors would tell you that there's not going to be a pool on the 3rd floor.
