getting super IA at the gated communities around my office, fuckin mollycoddled assholes. a HUGE automated traffic sign, the kind they use for highway closures / construction etc, set up outside one at the moment to remind them to bag their fucking leaves for collection

they've had their street repaved *twice* in the past 2 years!

i hate them & everything they stand for

going to proudly just let my leaves settle on my yard in celebration of not living in a gated community

Leaves decay and feed the dirt, people act like if they're not picked up they'll choke out all life on earth

when people treat the name of a restaurant as if it's a proper possessive noun, no matter what

Travellers came back after being evicted from their squat park up once. Council had put some large concrete blocks on the access ramp the travellers had used as access.
I think the ramp is for disabled/pram access from the square I live on into the park.
When the travellers came back the first time they dragged the blocks out of the way. Presumably with ropes attached to a vehicle. Blocks lay on their sides in the path for weeks until the council could evict the travellers again.
After that the council put about 100 of these blocks at about €400 each down the length of the path and at various other points around the park. These things aren't exactly aesthetically pleasing. So parts of the park are a bit of an eyesore.
They also don't work. Last Friday the travellers returned and dragged blocks out of the way again. Council has now evicted again.
Now they've placed sets of 6ft blocks in some strategic places. These include totally blocking that access ramp.
Surely there has to be some way of blocking incorrect vehicle access that doesn't block disabled/pram access and doesn't look ugly.

I'm assuming that original blocks are building blocks so about 3 foot long, 2 foot tall roughly. & possibly they were what the council had at hand and thought might have some effect. They've now been shown not to.
& the idea that the park is going to have these items dotted around it permanently is a bit of a drag.

Local paper was complaining about the park being a bit of a state before they were introduced.

The whole thing where people rake leaves and grass clippings and pay to have someone take them away, then pay to have someone else bring them huge piles of mulch, which they then spread in their gardens? Or they SUVify down to Home Despot and buy big-ass plastic bags of soil, mulch, humus, compost, etc. It doesn't make me angry, just seems prissy and creates busywork.

You could jut let things take care of themselves, like they did successfully for billions of years before you arrived. Or, if you're into stewardship, mow the leaves and grass together and you have efficient mulch. Or if you're so inclined, compost it all and now you have dirt.

Concert venue websites that update their calendars on a daily basis so you can't see who had played there last night.

That giant leaf vacuum is insane. What. Why not just let the leave be on the ground? AFAIK around here they just let em fly all over the damn place (and clog the storm drains lol)

I always forget that i can take the leaves from the front of the house where the trees are, to the back of the house where the beds need a good mulching. So thanks for the reminder.

i'm glad my new community isn't gated. the one at my old community was infuriating. I think I mentioned before, but they only let one resident per house put a number in the box, so if he wasn't home when you dialed the gate code - tough, they had to tailgate.

the weirdest incident was a few weeks ago, my last few nights in the old place, it's late at night and this dude who looks to be in a mondo hurry pulls into the community behind me. he goes to the call box, I go to the resident scan, and scan my card, right around the time that he presumably gets buzzed in by his friend.

I go in first and he follows up behind me, then he passes me at 30 or so mph in the oncoming lane (speed limit in the community is like 10 as it's winding). he zips through the community, and then stops next to the security guard, who is parked on the other side, preventing me from getting by. he chats with him, then leaves, and then I start to go and the security guard shouts WHOA, where are you going? do you live here? I'm like "yeah", and then he asks "why didn't you scan your card" and I said "I did!" and he was like "well that guy just told me you tailgated him in" and I'm like...."no, if anything he might have tailgated me in, he came in behind me then passed me at a fast speed" and he was all like "oh I'll go follow him then".

uhhh....so yeah, fuck gates. hasn't stopped the community from having a high theft rate, though I was never impacted fortunately. raccoons out the wazzoo too.

There's one stall in the office rest room, and for some reason, people like to close its door upon leaving.

Meaning that once every couple of times I have to use it, I first have to crouch down to see if there's any feet under there.

I made the mistake of entering a bathroom without knocking, because I thought it was the entrance to a multi-stall bathroom, but instead it was the entrance to a one-seater bathroom, which did lock, but not everybody tended to lock them. so I open the door and there I am making eye contact with one of my trainees who is on the toilet.

I felt so bad and embarrassed afterwards and didn't call on that person the rest of the day out of guilt.

(in my defense this was my first day in this building, which was in another state, and I foolishly assumed their layout was similar to ours, shitter-wise)

This function used to come in handy back in the days when the lights would turn off after ten minutes, and I would open the door to activate the sensor to turn them back on.

not in the bathrooms pplains describes, or most public restrooms (at least here in FL). Port-a-potties are usually the only ones that have the 'occupied' thing. not everybody seems to know how to use them but with the latter it doesn't matter cos there's usually so many available the chances of walking in on someone are p minimal.

re: non-door locker comment upthread, I too don't get not locking the door when you're on the can but *shrug*

There's these two guys on a bus I take around 6 AM who are always chatty and especially about politics. The rest of the bus is half asleep and just trying to get some relief before work. This is probably irrational, but I just wish they'd shut up.

(there's a local theatre that does this and a few things people have showed up having not gotten a "there's a problem call" only to find out their voicemail was bungled.

also people who sell tickets using Paypal but don't bother to limit the transactions to their capacity so they oversell.

there is some guy who was irritating in some of my college classes. late in college, i was regularly reading metafilter.. and he showed up there! and was nearly as irritating, posting all the time

so now i'm reading stuff on twitter and sure enough, at least once a week i see this motherfucker chiming in on random conversations! shut up, chad!

people who ask you if you can do something late one night and start harassing you the next morning for a response without any regard for whether you even saw the first message or have had any time to think over whether they can do what you ask before their arbitrary deadline
