noo matt bruenig was given the choice to either stop constantly calling people names on twitter or be fired and he chose to be fired because being a rageball online was too dear to his heart lol

some nerd ass socialist lawyer is suddenly a wild pugilist, once he tastes blood he cant get enough and asking him to abide by any standards of decency is a violation of first amendment rights

you gotta respect it he died for what he believed in

current josh marshall meltdown over a gizmodo article saying tweetstorms are bad is the good twitter

lag∞n, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:29 (seven years ago) link

yeah the bruenig thing was a seriously wtffff moment and went off the rails hardcore when every twitter buddy (or person who wanted to be his buddy) started hammering his perceived foes about how he, a real person with a job, was now without a job and they should die in a fire for not letting this man rage at others

mh 😏, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:52 (seven years ago) link

the best part was he was only writing part time while holding an actual well paying lawyer job

lag∞n, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:54 (seven years ago) link

can't remember, is gamergate lawyer a real lawyer now? he was married to a real lawyer, but I was thinking he got divorced and remarried or something

mh 😏, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:55 (seven years ago) link

fraid i missed out on that "thread"

lag∞n, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:56 (seven years ago) link

xp u sure about that? I thought I had seen tweets about how he had become unemployed.

tbf, I felt kind of the same way about the whole Salaita affair, like maybe he ultimately got canned because pro-Israel types were out to get him, but it's still probably a good idea for a professor to comport himself with some dignity on public social media and his tweets were bilious.

im not positive but it is my iirc

lag∞n, Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

I mean his wife was posting "hire my husband" stuff for a while, so I figured that meant unemployed.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:06 (seven years ago) link

think he mightve lost his law job after idk? or maybe he just was looking for writing work... the brueings r lowkey shady

lag∞n, Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

his wife seems great but that time she was all 'if everyone tells husband how wonderful he is, maybe he'll come back on twitter' made me rmde

best part of the bruenig thing was a bunch of twitter guys being totally incredulous that anyone could possibly be unfamiliar with the "scumbag steve" meme

intheblanks, Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:30 (seven years ago) link

feel like if you're a cool twitter guy you gotta know your memes

k3vin k., Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:32 (seven years ago) link

yeah, i think a lot of twitter superstars just assume everyone else also spends 90% of their waking hours on the internet, absorbing every bad joke and microtrend

intheblanks, Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:34 (seven years ago) link

tbf scumbag steve is a very viral meme

lag∞n, Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:35 (seven years ago) link

probably, but even very viral memes have a pretty small reach if you're not on social media all the time.

intheblanks, Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:42 (seven years ago) link

i dont understand what r u doing then

lag∞n, Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:44 (seven years ago) link

like i don't assume neera tanden or heather mcghee from demos immediately thought, "obviously this is a sharp comic reference to the famous meme!"

intheblanks, Thursday, 15 December 2016 22:44 (seven years ago) link

Salaita had quit his other job and moved to take his tenure track position when they just decided to pull the offer as if they had no idea he was fond of free palestine wildin' on social media; no warning, and no job, and this is a major university system that did it

Bruenig had a day job (that he has kept) and the writing gig was part time - they definitely took a hit financially, but he was warned

what i learned is that spending lots of time on social media is a great pathway to not having a job

Why am I a fan of Mara Wilson on Twitter? I've never even seen Matilda.

people clowning kurt eichenwald for getting a seizure is pretty gross

global tetrahedron, Friday, 16 December 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link

Did he actually have a seizure?

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Friday, 16 December 2016 19:19 (seven years ago) link

I mean Eichenwald is eminently clownable but I wouldn't clown him for that.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Friday, 16 December 2016 19:20 (seven years ago) link

I, too, had a seizure that made me forget that I sent thousands of dollars to child pornographers

mh 😏, Friday, 16 December 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

this dude,,, might not be on the level

lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2016 20:30 (seven years ago) link

oh wait, someone sent him a gif that apparently caused a seizure?

that's legitimately horrible behavior but frantically tweeting about a television interview, deleting all those tweets, and then immediately claiming a gif was what gave you a seizure is some timing

he's doing very well in the shit account tourney!
