Twitter at its absolute worst rn with thousands copycatting and tweeting 'franz Ferdinand' or '1914' -_-

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 19 December 2016 18:51 (seven years ago) link

like the chapo dudes revel in their vulgarity but seem completely blind to how lame and annoying they are

lag∞n, Monday, 19 December 2016 18:53 (seven years ago) link

listening to them talk to adam curtis was like oh this is what a healthy person with something to say sounds like

lag∞n, Monday, 19 December 2016 18:54 (seven years ago) link

yeah i'm not really into the chapo trap house thing but there's a bunch of overlap between those folks and the old SA forums and video games folks that i like so i can't really avoid it entirely

one thing abt the assassination of franz ferdinand is that no one thought it wld start a world war was one of the key aspects that lead to it starting a world war

A dude got killed, and things are tense, and no one has a coherent theory of how this leads to WW3. Therefore, it leads to WW3.

searched #FranzFerdinand on twitter to see what the fuss was abt and he was the first search result! what's his deal?

anyway i love these people acting like franz ferdinand is some super obscure knowledge nugget like i know jackshit abt history and i remember that from high school

we even did a thing in class where one person wore a black glove (to represent the black hand of serbia) and threw a dodge ball at some kid who was supposed to be franz ferdinand

our teacher was our wrestling coach

we also had a slave auction with money that had willie nelson's picture on it :/

I'm mostly a chapo stan still, definitely feels like they are losing a little steam or trying to find new footing with the Trump presidency. It's sort of like "you were right about the liberal order, it failed, now what?" Dissing all these pundits starts to lose its salience now that those pundits are actually fading/drowning.

Christman is a funny and original tweeter imo, and the smartest of the three. Felix is ok but kind of rehashes the same jokes.

I still generally like the show but prefer when they have a good interview on (Adam Curtis) or at least a good "reading series" rather than just filling the airtime with kibbutzing.

Whoa, OTM. Some strong SA or NeoGAF vibes for sure. I guess that’s why it’s so horrible.

Whatever. I don’t know. People should be nicer.

I think I justified to myself something like "well I only talk about the stuff I'm actually into, so if I look at it with a critical eye, at least I'm joking about it" but the truth is that being critical only gives you so much if you're interested in actually making things better. have to highlight the positive sometimes or at least clown it in a pleasing way

mh 😏, Monday, 19 December 2016 20:22 (seven years ago) link

at least we can all acknowledge the "game theory" dude was shockingly bad though

mh 😏, Monday, 19 December 2016 20:23 (seven years ago) link

I'm now hearing this meme that says that that dude is shockingly bad etc. Guys. It's time for some game theory.

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Monday, 19 December 2016 20:26 (seven years ago) link

One thing I kind of hate about twitter is that the rare times I've gotten a lot of RT's/likes it's usually because I did a really good job of thinking in meta terms about what kinds of tweets people think are funny, whereas the tweets I actually thought were funniest or most original don't seem to go anywhere. Maybe that's what any kind of public/performative joke medium is like.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Monday, 19 December 2016 20:27 (seven years ago) link

my fav chapo ep was probably just them talking about the insane experience of adam sandler's 9/11 movie. if they start taking themselves too seriously as "public intellectuals" or something it'll get boring real fast :-/

if they start taking themselves too seriously as "public intellectuals" or something it'll get boring real fast

They do mention this on the recent show following up the Adam Curtis interview that they decided just to yak with each other and talk about "Swordfish"

The Reign Over Me ep was fun.

I also really enjoyed the recent premium ep with jacob bacharach, mainly because it was mainly him & Matt seriously talking about what kinda things lead to conspiracizing(which I'm into), and less from Will & Felix throwing in jokes.

They keep declaring themselves more a comedy show that gets into politics than the opposite, but I think there'd be real value in a show foregrounding the deeper theory & reading that Matt(& Amber, to a lesser extent) bring. And "Dune" jokes.

they need to work on being good at talking

THE SKURJ OF FAKE NEWS. (kingfish), Monday, 19 December 2016 20:51 (seven years ago) link

I was going to make the point that anyone could sit there and clown dumb shit like the movie "Swordfish" for an hour, then realized I know people who genuinely could not, then wondered what is wrong with me that I could just spew garbage about a garbage movie

mh 😏, Monday, 19 December 2016 20:57 (seven years ago) link

The last Caleb Jacoby episode was extremely funny though
