I do think they should adopt some end of history approach to the console cycle tho
― slathered in cream and covered with stickers (silby)
i don't know what this means. i thought "end of history" was some marxist thing.

― Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 January 2017 18:33 (seven years ago) link
in Fukuyama's version it means everybody just agrees video games are as good as they're ever going to be, shuts the fuck up about it and plays endless iterations of CoD for the rest of forever
― Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 January 2017 18:34 (seven years ago) link
imo that'd be selling and creating consoles games and that don't see the march of hardware capabilities and the increasing budgets of AAA titles as inevitable
have a library of all the popular games of past generations available on the new consoles, whether via backward compatibility or the ability to download new copies of existing titles you owned on old consoles. if people want to create technically uncomplicated side-scrollers reminiscent of mario or classic mega man, encourage them. the opening up of consoles to have online markets that are similar to steam has led to a bunch of games that are retro-seeming but also very innovative
― mh 😏, Friday, 13 January 2017 18:34 (seven years ago) link
don't know what Nintendo's role in that could be tho unless there's room for some kind of Super Mario World of Warfare

i'm okay with the lower specs in the same way that i'm like, okay with not having a 4K tv... feel like current or even last gen tech is good enough. does anybody else share this view? thanks :o)
― 龜, Friday, 13 January 2017 18:41 (seven years ago) link
yeah basically, the gap between this console gen and the previous has never felt justified in terms of advancing tech, and the fidelity of TV images is probably exceeding the capacity of human eyes to process that shit anyway

vr is gonna be extremely cool in 20 years
― ciderpress, Friday, 13 January 2017 18:50 (seven years ago) link
yeah I've played it and definitely got the feeling that I'd be way into it if I was 13 and not 30, though my brain would probably completely melt from playing it so much
probably gonna be awesome in 5 years given how much money's poured into it. whether or not it has any staying power is yet to be seen a guess. right now it's just a neat party trick.
― frogbs, Friday, 13 January 2017 18:53 (seven years ago) link
i figure it'll be time to buy a VR machine when there's a must play game for it. afaict all the hype is about the technology - i haven't heard of a single platform exclusive game being hyped.

think people have been saying this about 3D movies since at least 1950
― Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 January 2017 18:58 (seven years ago) link
plus lots of video games involve you getting jumped by vicious monsters and the current level of realness of that is plenty for me thx

my idea for the VR hackathon at work was to create a fake "calibration" app whose purpose was to make the user look as ridiculous as possible to onlookers by having them do stupid shit to "calibrate" the headset. no one wanted to work on that with me

yeah my brother got one of these and it was like 5 minutes of setting up 'boundaries' and what not, the whole duck n' weave aspect is neat but I don't see how video games + exercise is gonna beat plain ol' video games
plus I'm pretty sure people are gonna get seriously injured thanks to these things. someone's gonna hit a well and fall awkwardly since they have no semblance of where they are. or step on a child or a dog or something. god forbid.
does seem like there would be some cool applications in arcade-style settings though. already hearing talk of roller coasters using these which seems absolutely terrifying, but also great. that said I also have been hearing about VR conventions where everyone ends up with pink eye, so lol

yeah this is approx what I had in mind, have a library in perpetuity, sell console hardware that maintains the same architecture and hardware features Forever, charge people $X to play online, every 1p Nintendo game that doesn't require special hardware available forever on one platform, make their money off Amiibo margins, don't play the Console Generation game against Xbox and Playstation

slightly torn on Switch but leaning no, or waiting until the holiday season. as said above Mario and Zelda look great but do I want to pay $300+60+60 for 2 gamesnot to mention the accessories/extra controllers you need (def would get a Pro controller, another $70-80)and Scorpio comes out in the winter. never got an XB1 so that's tempting (plus backwards compat on that one i think?)

Was trying to think about what the hardware team is doing now. Normally I'd assume they devote time to finishing up the next DS thing, but then I realized they just did that.
So what's the next Nintendo portable: a little all-in-one Switch with better battery life?
― The beaver is not the bad guy (El Tomboto), Friday, 13 January 2017 21:50 (seven years ago) link
oh i'm sure, especially as components get cheaper they'll keep making new ones. hell DS/3DS got how many different versions? felt like one almost every year
― Nhex, Friday, 13 January 2017 21:53 (seven years ago) link
They just sort of made the new portable, is my point. The product lines have converged.

this looks sick.
if they aren't making games for a separate portable console then that is good news! it would double the software available on Nintendo machines! all those remasters and cool things like Zelda a Link Between Worlds that came out on 3ds can now be produced for this HD console/portable hybrid.

3DS is super successful. it did come out 6 years ago tho!
i wonder how far they will go with the tablet functionality. it uses the same kind of touch screen as iPhone, so maybe you will be able to play your iPhone games and apps over your Switch? is Apple close at all with Sony or Microsoft? lol wait forget i asked about Microsoft.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 January 2017 04:15 (seven years ago) link
Switch uses a capacitive touchscreen - like a modern phone, allowing for gliding motions and light touch - whereas the Wii U had a resistive, pressure-sensitive touchscreen, requiring the use of a stylus. this is a good sign.

I just meant if you're the chief of new hardware design at Nintendo, are you working on a new handheld cartridge-based console right now? Not likely, you just made one!
