new idea for NX controller: the buttons are so close together that you must use "JoyPicks" - 10 mm long, 1mm thick steel rods - to "play" the joycon like a drum. for only $29 more per joyPick, add a motion-sensitive joybubble camera to the back and share the experience with your nintendo friends in the MiiVerse!!

You're being funny, but the Switch XL is coming out in Q4

there would probably be nothing stopping them from releasing an updated "tablet" in a few years that can use the same cradle and joycon etc, aside from, you know, being nintendo and making you buy everything over again.

yeah, and nintendo is really no worse with all the optional/mandatory purchases than sony or microsoft. i remember feeling unbelievably lucky when i somehow got my dad to buy a playstation 1 for me for christmas back when it came out and was crazy expensive. and then the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, soon afterward, when i realized i had to ask him for $20 to go buy a memory card so i could save the fucking game

the cynical part of me thinks they totally did that on purpose

it's totally hilarious that Nintendo is releasing two separate, highly touted, nationwide campaign-abetted, national news-dominating video game systems within the span four months; and no normal person can possibly buy either of them
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 January 2017 05:14 (seven years ago) link
like its literal place in the market is for the "casual gamer" but no person who is casual about gaming is going to camp out outside a fucking Game Stop
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 January 2017 05:17 (seven years ago) link
yeah, I don't get it. Is it worth that much more to build up hype than it is to just sell these outright? I'd really like to get one or both for my son, but don't have the wherewithal to make it happen. Very frustrating.

So does Nintendo just have a totally fucked supply chain? You can barely even get a 3DS..

NES Classic, which you also cannot buy.

wouldn't surprise me if they brought back NES classic (or SNES classic) next xmas
Wii U was tough to get at launch, but soon enough very easy to get iirc
― Nhex, Thursday, 19 January 2017 09:15 (seven years ago) link
srsly though, are they still afraid of flooding the market '80s-style nightmares?

― increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Thursday, 19 January 2017 12:17 (seven years ago) link
guessing they're doing it on purpose? the difficulty of obtaining the original Wii was a bigger story than anything the console actually did
― frogbs, Thursday, 19 January 2017 14:37 (seven years ago) link
come now, that's not true. the Wii won its generation in units sold and mainstream popularity. grandmas etc etc
― Nhex, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:13 (seven years ago) link
it won in the end yeah but like i said upthread there were months and months after launch where they were just impossible to find, whether through accident or design
the thought did occur to me as well that maybe they're deliberately creating scarcity as a way to manufacture the appearance of switchmania

The 360 that is.
you definitely couldn't just walk into a store and buy a Wii for quite a while, i remember this well
― ciderpress, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link
i waited w a crowd of people in that glass walmart antechamber from like 5:15-5:59 AM to get a wii. last time i ever did anything like that.
― difficult listening hour, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:44 (seven years ago) link
I think part of it is Nintendo's relatively conservative stance on warehousing and their views on profitability. afaik they're still the only ones who don't take a loss on the console itself, and I think part of that extends to not ramping up more production lines than needed or warehousing units before shipping.
― mh π, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:50 (seven years ago) link
yeah, i was signed up for a website that would send me alerts when wiis were in stock in online retailers and it took a couple of weeks before i managed to actually respond to an alert within the five minute window you'd have before they sold out again.
and i had to buy a bundle with a couple of games i didn't really want because retailers realised that idiots like me would pay extra if it meant getting a console :(
― i don't watch lamestream porn (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 19 January 2017 16:24 (seven years ago) link

Did anyone here ever pick up their GameCube by the handle and carry it over to their friend's house like it was a lunchbox? Nintendo seems to really like this idea that everyone is constantly packing up their console and setting it up at different locations, like it happens so frequently that the entire console must be tiny and include a handle.
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 March 2017 15:16 (seven years ago) link
You have to bring it everywhere because only like one person you know is allowed to have one
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 1 March 2017 16:28 (seven years ago) link
which is why all games must allow four players, iirc

fuckin nintendo, with their desirable prods
Nintendo has had a great track record with properly functioning hardware right? The Gamecube memory cards were dodgy sometimes and my Nintendo DS died after several years but they're generally great.
PS2 had one of the best game libraries ever but never forget how fragile that thing was in any version. I think PS3 and the first two XBoxes were also unreliable.

Nintendo hardware being good was one of the things that made them win in the 80s when everyone else was failing. They started a program to fix broken consoles back when it was rare to do so, and this assuaged the fears of retailers still reeling from the video game crash. Personally I've never had a Nintendo product fail on me and this includes systems i found used that kept playing games for years.
Bring on the big budget Zeldas/Marios! They need to just keep pumping them out, every couple of years. Those two games alone look way more impressive and fun than anything from the Wii/Wii U generations.
Basically, they need games.
