I think part of it is Nintendo's relatively conservative stance on warehousing and their views on profitability. afaik they're still the only ones who don't take a loss on the console itself, and I think part of that extends to not ramping up more production lines than needed or warehousing units before shipping.

yeah, i was signed up for a website that would send me alerts when wiis were in stock in online retailers and it took a couple of weeks before i managed to actually respond to an alert within the five minute window you'd have before they sold out again.

and i had to buy a bundle with a couple of games i didn't really want because retailers realised that idiots like me would pay extra if it meant getting a console :(

even the NES Classic had forced bundles with dumb extras this season. i gave up early

Did anyone here ever pick up their GameCube by the handle and carry it over to their friend's house like it was a lunchbox? Nintendo seems to really like this idea that everyone is constantly packing up their console and setting it up at different locations, like it happens so frequently that the entire console must be tiny and include a handle.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 March 2017 15:16 (seven years ago) link

You have to bring it everywhere because only like one person you know is allowed to have one

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 1 March 2017 16:28 (seven years ago) link

which is why all games must allow four players, iirc

mh ๐Ÿ˜, Wednesday, 1 March 2017 16:30 (seven years ago) link

who the fuck would risk walking down the street with it like that? Hi muggers have a free nintedo.

PressAnarchyToContinue (Ste), Wednesday, 1 March 2017 16:32 (seven years ago) link

people who think you're a jerk and will "accidentally" run into you or smack it out of your hands are a lot more common than muggers imo

they would take some heat for it but they should go ahead and add a radio antenna and dual cassette deck to this thing. also maybe add a secret compartment to store amiibos and dildos

Nintendo has had a great track record with properly functioning hardware right? The Gamecube memory cards were dodgy sometimes and my Nintendo DS died after several years but they're generally great.

PS2 had one of the best game libraries ever but never forget how fragile that thing was in any version. I think PS3 and the first two XBoxes were also unreliable.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 1 March 2017 20:32 (seven years ago) link

not gonna lie i loved the little gamecube handle even though i never used it

still afraid this will flop badly

Nintendo hardware being good was one of the things that made them win in the 80s when everyone else was failing. They started a program to fix broken consoles back when it was rare to do so, and this assuaged the fears of retailers still reeling from the video game crash. Personally I've never had a Nintendo product fail on me and this includes systems i found used that kept playing games for years.

Bring on the big budget Zeldas/Marios! They need to just keep pumping them out, every couple of years. Those two games alone look way more impressive and fun than anything from the Wii/Wii U generations.

Basically, they need games.

There are reports of latches on the joycon breaking if you drop them.

Front-loading NESes all broke. SNES is fine besides the discoloration. N64 is great. Gamecube memory cards break from heat. Wii remotes needed condoms because people were idiots. Gameboys are immortal. DS and 3DS have shoulder triggers that become unreliable after time, and the hinges on the DSlite would break.

lagโˆžn, Wednesday, 1 March 2017 22:21 (seven years ago) link

there was a p convincing video going around by some nintendo fanboy about how this is really just a soft launch for the console and the 'real' release is the holiday season where there will possibly be a price drop and also mario. the logic being that that's essentially what happened with the 3DS a few years ago

it'd be nice if that were true cause if this flops and stays flopped like wii u this then yikes

wld post video but on phone at work

"There are reports of latches on the joycon breaking if you drop them."

hate to be a nintendo fanboy but there was just one report and the giantbomb guys followed it up to specifically say they dropped it on concrete... so yeah, they will break if you break them. on concrete.

Zelda reviewing well, 98 metacritic so far

"The best Zelda thereโ€™s ever been, and very possibly the best video game ever made."

Took a look at metacritic. Yeah, it's reviewing very well. Wow. My brother is buying it tomorrow, guess I know how I'll spend my weekend.

yeeeep pretty hyped to play this tomorrow.

just another (diamonddave85), Thursday, 2 March 2017 13:32 (seven years ago) link

i played one of the recent ones for wii - it was like a zelda rpg? idk you run around a bunch following directions and fight these huge mobs of soldiers and i don't remember there being any puzzles and it was multiplayer? it kinda blew.

Skyward Sword got a lot of criticism for the motion controls (and there was a lot of back and forth if the reviewers even understood how they worked) and the sheer amount of info text/tutorials.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 2 March 2017 13:40 (seven years ago) link

Which put me off and I couldn't be bothered after the first hour.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 2 March 2017 13:45 (seven years ago) link

I never figured out the motion controls. Bought it with my little brother, I have still not made it past the first dungeon :(

Frederik B, Thursday, 2 March 2017 13:59 (seven years ago) link

Mordy, sounds like you played Hyrule Warriors which was a Dynasty Warriors game with Zelda trappings.

I loved Skyward Sword motion controls and all, looking forward to the new approach too though

The third main criticism was how linear it was, and/or how there was nothing to explore.

Evan, Thursday, 2 March 2017 17:46 (seven years ago) link

I would mind that too much. I was mainly scared off by the long cutscenes and hearing that every time you load the game up and get rupees (money) it tells you what they are every time.
I might give it another shot someday.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 2 March 2017 18:13 (seven years ago) link

OoT is supposedly the highest rated game ever, yet I find it painful and uninteresting. This though, looks right up my alley.

I look forward to my trip to India in which I'll cut grass, smash pots and bump into trees and lug those huge rupees around in my brown cloth bag.
