Keep watching commercials and you'll run into the xx track before too long. O2 probably have the rights already
Oh shit, longest song in the rollout has been SNATCHED away from me. This had better be good :p

still hoping "The Hustle" makes it

is this the longest entry in 77 history?
there was also a ~18 minute track on my ballot that i think has a chance of placing still?
― ciderpress, Thursday, 26 January 2017 14:11 (seven years ago) link
Some of these records are so unpromising that I can't make it through the irritating Alexa advert before it. You can't even skip it anymore...Although I have to admit that I'd rather watch a commercial than listen to some of these last tracks.

I was going to comment that a lot of the poll has mostly been inspiring me to really explore new classical and jazz releases and then this happens.

Also, this seems a really low votes/points for a number 15 compared to previous years. Easier to get things top twenty this time! I'd imagine an almighty, one might say Lazarus-esque points jump is coming soon

id guess that more and more people seem to be sticking to not voting for tracks if theyre voting for the album too
― nxd, Thursday, 26 January 2017 14:15 (seven years ago) link
oh right I forgot about the lolsy novelty noms
glad there are (probably) none of those this year tbh xp

there were the royskopp and bruno mars ones
― saer, Thursday, 26 January 2017 14:16 (seven years ago) link
cmon voting in novelty tracks is classic

2015's #15 pick was:
15 JUSTIN BIEBER "Sorry" (474 points, 21 votes)Pitchfork - DNP / P&J - 39
But we'd gone through most of the Grimes album by then and I think this year's list is benefiting from there being fewer consensus points.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2017 14:23 (seven years ago) link
So glad this made it. No. 15, wow!

I voted for the Flux Quartet recording of Morton Feldman's String Quartet no. 2 (367min) back in the day*, but it didn't place.
(* not really)

btw i like the decision to get rid of having the pfork/p&j comparisons inline in the countdown, leave that stuff to the spreadsheet trivia afterwards

blackened cities is my favourite discovery yet, wow

xposts Agreed - I'm all for anything that makes the big spreadsheet reveal more delirious than it already is

I can't even remember which thread I discovered Melanie de Biasio on - she doesn't have a thread of her own - but just remember stopping in my tracks half a minute in and being completely spellbound for the next 24 minutes. It's so hypnotic and restrained and feels a bit like Diamanda Galás, if everything about Galás was inverted. I didn't know post-industrial jazz was a thing but here we go.
― lex pretend, Thursday, 26 January 2017 14:28 (seven years ago) link
Geez, how come I didn't know about Blackened Cities? This is great. My fault for ignoring jazz this year.
― jmm, Thursday, 26 January 2017 14:28 (seven years ago) link
Amazing top 20 so far.
I preferred Sister to Shut Up & Kiss Me but I'm happy to see it place. They're definitely two of the highlights on the album.
Love that Mr Fingers song. I hadn't heard it until the nominations poll. It was one of the last things I cut from my ballot.
I had a feeling The Pop Kids would place. The thread was full of people saying how it was by far the highlight of Super. Love Is A Bourgeois Construct was in a similar position three years ago. I'd agree that Super is a drop off from Electric but not by that much. It is still a hundred times better than Elysium. The Pop Kids is pretty much my favourite PSB single since You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk. It was in my top five.
Lake By The Ocean is perfect. Sometimes I think it's the best song he'd done.
The XX song got me interested in them again. I have watched the SNL performance over and over in the last month. I didn't know they had it in them.
I was so close to voting for Blackened Cities. I'd only heard it twice so cut it from my ballot very late on. Amazing song. I thought it might sneak into the top 10.
Great work everyone!

this is probably my favorite discovery of the poll so far, just beautiful
― gr8080, Thursday, 26 January 2017 14:33 (seven years ago) link
I ought to really like Blackened Cities but it leaves me quite cold. I'm going through an Ella Fitzgerald phase at the moment and am not really open to gloomy modern style vocalists like this, but I might come to like it later.

You might dig stuff like Bohren and der Club of Gore? There's a good recent comp called Bohren for Beginners.

oh wow this is also a surprise
the least good recent cohen album but i like this song

also rip dude, best who ever did it
yeah the vein of inspiration runs dry for most of it. I appreciate the song more as gesture and performance than art. Still glad to see it.

amazing song.

I liked Cohen's last album more than the couple prior to it - seemed to have more focus and more snarkiness about it, less sentiment. Love this song
― lex pretend, Thursday, 26 January 2017 14:59 (seven years ago) link
The last three are all amazing but this particular song just feels emblematic of the era.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2017 15:02 (seven years ago) link
this made my Cohen ballot, makes me wish he'd produced a bunch more stuff with this level of sonic oomph. It actually almost matches the crazy-deep vocal for impact.

The Paul Kalkbrenner remix is worth a listen as well, although does exactly the opposite of what it should, throws a load of unwanted sounds in there, when actually what it should be doing is stripping elements out, making it super-minimal and making the most of the cavernous space around his voice.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 26 January 2017 15:04 (seven years ago) link
I voted for this. I had not listened to any recent Cohen until after he died. This was the first thing I listened to after I found out about his death. This was right after the Trump election win. "You want it darker? We kill the flame" really got to me.

The bassline is so kinetic and satisfying as well.
