Stereogum ran a whole article this week on cover versions of this song. They were uniformly awful.

I would gladly listen to Chvrches cover Stereolab.

chvrches doing "bela lugosi's dead" feels way more out-of-depth than this though, not that i'm justifying this cover to people who will believe me on that point

that chvrches cover is so bizarre, i had totally forgotten about it

besides which the "by your side" cover doesn't veer from the original arrangement or reconstruct it as a rock song a la futureheads, just sort of faithfully recreates it with saxophones and synths and i assume someone humming through a distortion pedal, w matty singing through a vocoder. the anger it inspires is just another exponent of the significant contempt ppl already feel for this band, sade injury added to general insult

though i guess now that they've trolled lex so directly they can break up

what's up with the posts in this thread about how this cover is bad

matty using a vocoder kinda subverted how i genuinely would rather not hear anyone but sade sing this song. it's like the inverse of bon iver's bonnie raitt cover, which is well-intentioned and intolerable

it's like they took the outro of "if i believe you" and made it a whole song, can't think of anything i'd want more in my life
