I'm not familiar with Derek Acorah, but self-styled mediums as a class are predators on the vulnerable and credulous. The Hallmark Greeting Card Co may have made a fortune on sloppy sentiment, but they only wanted to sell you a card and envelope for a couple of bucks, not manipulate your grief by selling you false hopes for thousands of dollars.

The people who died because of inadequate / nonexistent seat belts, car seats, and helmets are, of course, unable to post refutations to Facebook. So it's very tidily self-confirming.
