plenty of guys seem to be doing ok without an "insane work ethic"

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Saturday, 18 February 2017 20:50 (seven years ago) link

that's a linkedin recommendation i left for a former colleague and tbh i am somewhat uncomfortable that it has been reposted here

Roberto Spiralli, Saturday, 18 February 2017 20:54 (seven years ago) link

over 18,600 posts and counting. fb is the gift that keeps on annoying.

This is comfortably the longest thread, right?

tales of a scorched-earth nothing (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 19 February 2017 02:45 (seven years ago) link

it's also the worst possible thread to be this huge, which is why it should never be replaced

Seems grainy, artefacted, watermarked lakeside dwellings are the new grainy sweaty tits of houses. Probably inhabited by minions and people who know what real work feels like.

have you ever priced waterfront property?

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Saturday, 25 February 2017 18:40 (seven years ago) link

From Derek Acorah, that one.

Never changed username before (cardamon), Sunday, 26 February 2017 15:12 (seven years ago) link

Dunno that's worth hating on, except on aesthetic grounds. Sure, it is sentimental af, but that sort of sentimentality provides comfort to many people who are grieving, so it gets a pass from me.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Sunday, 26 February 2017 19:22 (seven years ago) link

Derek Acorah is a self-styled medium who uses that sort of sentimentality to provide himself with an income, so it's a little more objectionable in context

soref, Sunday, 26 February 2017 19:32 (seven years ago) link

I'm not familiar with Derek Acorah, but self-styled mediums as a class are predators on the vulnerable and credulous. The Hallmark Greeting Card Co may have made a fortune on sloppy sentiment, but they only wanted to sell you a card and envelope for a couple of bucks, not manipulate your grief by selling you false hopes for thousands of dollars.

The people who died because of inadequate / nonexistent seat belts, car seats, and helmets are, of course, unable to post refutations to Facebook. So it's very tidily self-confirming.

There's a good bit in 'Lost in Music' where they sit in rapt silence listening to DSOTM for the first time, and as the final notes fade out one of the gang lets out a massive guff, they all fall around laughing and are unable to take it seriously again.

idk why but the idea that people born in the 80s were the "pioneers of walkmans and chatrooms" is maybe the most irritating aspect of all this to me

strongly recommend that some of these people try drinking lead paint from a rusty firehose though. #countrythang
