I've greatly enjoyed Headboggle the 2 times I've seen him at noise pancakes (and also work at an art institution with Derek! used to work at two with him, different departments though).

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 21:08 (seven years ago) link

Let's aim for a classic FAP on Thursday and maybe I will also show up to noise show!

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 23:07 (seven years ago) link

Nice plan! I salute all Wednesday/Thursday doings in absentia but will talk Tombot's ear off tonight.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 23:12 (seven years ago) link

wish I could make thursday! but definitely going to the Peacock Lounge tomorrow. Headboggle & Black Spirituals yep.

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 00:38 (seven years ago) link

So, busy people: where is convenient and enjoyable to have a thing on Thursday? Wouldn't worry too much about being close to convention-al downtown.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 03:59 (seven years ago) link

Convenient and Enjoyable = Oakland -- sorry, had to put it out there

sarahell, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 06:37 (seven years ago) link

There's a new tiki bar walking distance from The Palace called Pagan Idol. Lot's of room inside for message board people.

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 20:50 (seven years ago) link

I love a good tiki bar!

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 21:03 (seven years ago) link

I even love a mediocre tiki bar!

sarahell, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 21:05 (seven years ago) link

haha yes

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 21:05 (seven years ago) link

Tiki bars are basically nonexistent back home so that sounds perfect

El Tomboto, Thursday, 23 February 2017 02:31 (seven years ago) link

I have no idea what any of you look like. I guess I should be easy to spot if you follow I Love Style on the reg

El Tomboto, Thursday, 23 February 2017 04:14 (seven years ago) link

(orange blazer with elbow patches. wool chucks)

El Tomboto, Thursday, 23 February 2017 04:42 (seven years ago) link

sarahell, Thursday, 23 February 2017 05:55 (seven years ago) link

Are you at the show rn?

El Tomboto, Thursday, 23 February 2017 06:10 (seven years ago) link

i worked until 9:15.

i wouldn't be able to make it until 7pm at the earliest, but that's just me

sarahell, Thursday, 23 February 2017 06:11 (seven years ago) link

I would love to be there but a couple things are conspiring against me - 1) it's the end of the month and I have no drinkin money and 2) coordinating support stuff for a buddy who just a cancer op and is on his own

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 February 2017 17:32 (seven years ago) link

Allow it. Boo, though.

7's great for me.

0 / 0 (lukas), Thursday, 23 February 2017 17:50 (seven years ago) link

7pm at Pagan Idol! For all those who may be concerned about drinkin funds, one round is on me

El Tomboto, Thursday, 23 February 2017 18:23 (seven years ago) link

it's on Bush St. b/w Kearny and Montgomery, so, very transitable

sarahell, Thursday, 23 February 2017 18:27 (seven years ago) link

Sounds great, but I'm also spent from this week, and I'm gonna have to pass. Don't swallow any umbrellas!

DJI, Thursday, 23 February 2017 21:37 (seven years ago) link

Working (just a couple blocks away) til 8ish but will swing by afterwards.

Fetchboy, Friday, 24 February 2017 02:46 (seven years ago) link

OK, heading over in a bit. I just had dinner around the corner. Today the blazer is khaki.

El Tomboto, Friday, 24 February 2017 02:55 (seven years ago) link

i had to be home with kid tonight. one day I will see more of you en masse instead of randomly in spurts and drabs

akm, Friday, 24 February 2017 03:56 (seven years ago) link

That was (expectedly) nice and (unexpectedly) epic. Lesson? You stay in a tiki bar past 10pm, things get weird.

El Tomboto, Friday, 24 February 2017 14:46 (seven years ago) link

This all sounds plausible.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 February 2017 15:23 (seven years ago) link

One day I'll figure my shit out.

0 / 0 (lukas), Friday, 24 February 2017 16:21 (seven years ago) link

Sarahell, you were heroic last night.

Fetchboy, Friday, 24 February 2017 21:17 (seven years ago) link

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 24 February 2017 21:19 (seven years ago) link

sarahell, Friday, 24 February 2017 21:45 (seven years ago) link

In addition to having clipping. tonight, Tuesday night (aka Mardi Gras) Brick+Mortar has MJ's Brass Boppers (best nola-style brass band in the area) and before that a second line around the mission with MJ's and some other folks. Should be some good dancing going down.

Fetchboy, Sunday, 26 February 2017 03:29 (seven years ago) link

Chaki's doing another Prince night at Elbo Room tomorrow (Thursday).

question for SF ilx mind - is there anywhere you'd recommend for decent swimming in SF? preferably outdoor/natural sea/freshwater but decent swimming pools will do as well?

i'm there for a few days next week and looking to get a bit of energetic activity in my day. i don't run unless sorely provoked, which leaves cycling and swimming.

internet suggests preponderance of pool party pools rather than places to actually swim (mission pool? north beach pool?)

Fizzles, Thursday, 13 April 2017 16:39 (seven years ago) link

(i will of course be mining this thread for the far more important places to eat/drink etc.)

Fizzles, Thursday, 13 April 2017 16:40 (seven years ago) link

I've been to a few public pools because we have my kids in swim lessons. Here's the ones I know:
- Janet Pomeroy Center. This pool is actually the best because it's both heated and indoors. It's clientele is largely (as far as I can tell), old people, kids, and the developmentally disabled (since that's who the center was built for). So there's a lot of "therapeutic swim" hours and whatnot. It's at the total ass-end of town out by the zoo/ocean beach.
- Rossi Pool. This is a great indoor pool in the inner Richmond. Not heated but pretty big, maybe the biggest public pool I've been in in the city.
- Mission Pool. This one is, oddly, open-air even though it's in a building, and is not heated. Long and narrow, best for swimming laps. My daughter takes her swim team lessons here.
- Garfield Pool. This one's allright, I haven't actually swam in it but my daughter had lessons there for awhile. Might have the most open hours/be the easiest to get in to. It is indoors and unheated.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 April 2017 17:07 (seven years ago) link

I wouldn't recommend swimming in the ocean at the beaches in SF in general - water is freezing and there are often crazy rip-tides/cross currents. Unprepared people drown on the regular.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 April 2017 17:08 (seven years ago) link

that is awesome Οὖτs, thank you. i swim in freshwater in U.K. all but jan and feb these days so temp not a problem, rip tides not so much tho. Rossi sounds up my street. Will pack my bathers. thanks again.

I used to go to Hamilton pool every Friday morning and it was nice and quiet. looks like it's been refurbished since. then used to go to bun mee for lunch. those were the days

kinder, Thursday, 13 April 2017 17:49 (seven years ago) link

i'm guessing they are the days no longer?

(oh also recs for second hand bookshops.)

Fizzles, Thursday, 13 April 2017 18:19 (seven years ago) link

Golden Apple, Borderlands (if yr into sf/fantasy/genre fiction), Adobe, Aardvark

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 April 2017 18:21 (seven years ago) link

There's a pool near Fillmore and Geary that has a couple sweet waterslides, I can find out more if you want

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Thursday, 13 April 2017 18:28 (seven years ago) link

Hamilton...? http://sfrecpark.org/destination/hamilton-rec-center/hamilton-pool/

I've never been there but seems like I should check it out, kids love waterslides

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 April 2017 18:38 (seven years ago) link

If you are interested in 2nd hand bookshops -- you should venture to the East Bay and go to Moe's in Berkeley, which is my favorite, followed by Green Apple, which is in San Francisco.

sarahell, Thursday, 13 April 2017 18:56 (seven years ago) link

lol Golden Apple duh I meant Green Apple

xp

My fav used bookstore is Aardvark Books on Church. They always have EXACTLY what I want and I find some amazing treasures every time I go there. Also it's run by rad old gays that love Fairport Convention and there's a rad store cat.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 13 April 2017 19:01 (seven years ago) link

Aardvark is always one of those places I drive by on the way somewhere else that looks cool, but I never stop because parking sucks.
