The payoff is that if you ask Nintendo, they say "Yeah they taste terrible on purpose"

so far i've seen game reviewers:

drop the Switch on concrete
punch the controls out of the holder
eat Switch gamecards

did these people eat paint when they were kids?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 2 March 2017 22:46 (seven years ago) link

the best two zeldas are still in this order lttp > ocarina

no way, the first NES game is number one.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 2 March 2017 22:48 (seven years ago) link

idk if it's better than lttp but you're right it is better than ocarina

Mordy, Thursday, 2 March 2017 22:49 (seven years ago) link

They ate Mario Paint when they were kids.

Re: Zelda - Critics seem to like the part where you have to forage for food and cook yourself a meal to heal yourself (or something)? Yeah, I wish MarioKart made you spend time at the mechanic between races.

lttp is the best zelda game, the one ppl r complaining abt upthread isnt real

lag∞n, Thursday, 2 March 2017 22:54 (seven years ago) link

Blasphemy I know but I found A Link To The Past tedious too often, although I have fond memories of parts of it. I love Link's Awakening but the Zelda series is a rare example of me mostly preferring the 3d games. Ocarina is my favourite.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:02 (seven years ago) link

i need to replay LttP. i loved it when i had it but i almost can't seem to go back to it. like Super Mario World, it feels almost too perfect.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:03 (seven years ago) link

I think Super Mario World is a vastly better game.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:20 (seven years ago) link

Twilight Princess was fucking epic

El Tomboto, Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:21 (seven years ago) link

i don't want to be hyperbolic here, but if u don't love lttp u might be hitler. really consider this

art, Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:22 (seven years ago) link

Well I'm Hitler then. There's lots of great parts but most of it Is a chore. Too much fucking walking and the dungeons were too dull.

Final Fantasy VI (ファイナルファンタジーVI Fainaru Fantajī Shikkusu?, also known as Final Fantasy III for its initial North American release) is the best zelda game

sleepingbag, Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:44 (seven years ago) link

I really enjoyed Twilight Princess but it comes across as very compromised. There was said to be lots of direction changes during development. I think Zant was originally supposed to be the end boss but then they changed it to be more like Ocarina to secure western sales.
I think the wolf transformation thing was a waste of time because they didn't really do much with it.

Wasn't much into Windwaker apart from "KABOOM! SPLAAAASH!"

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:45 (seven years ago) link

Link Between Worlds is super fun too, although not better than LTTP.

jmm, Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:58 (seven years ago) link

If I had gotten around to Ocarina before Twilight Im willing to believe it could have felt less awesome but I played them in the wrong order so to me, Twilight felt pretty revelatory.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:59 (seven years ago) link

I'm not planning on buying a Switch since I don't play much games anymore, but it's sort of killing me that I can't play Breath of the Wild.

jmm, Friday, 3 March 2017 00:00 (seven years ago) link

I'm going to get one later this year after some more patches and indies have come out. I pretty much agree with everything the blue puppet said.

El Tomboto, Friday, 3 March 2017 00:01 (seven years ago) link

twlight princess has some of the coolest dungeons of the 3d zeldas but overall as a game its a distant 4th to ocarina majora windwaker imo

ciderpress, Friday, 3 March 2017 00:03 (seven years ago) link

(still b etter than skyward sword and possibly those weird DS ones that ive never played nor heard any praise for)

Apart from the big snowman's house I got really tired of the dungeons. I think Twilight Princess excelled when you were out in the wider world. The ending fights against Ganondorf were pretty great too. But In some ways it is my favourite Zelda.

best thing about link's awakening = the trading game
worst thing about link's awakening = the stupid it was all a dream ending

Mordy, Friday, 3 March 2017 00:25 (seven years ago) link

thought Ocarina was kinda average when I played for the first time a couple of years ago. same for Chrono Trigger ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Link's Awakening on the other hand was a total joy with a really great dreamlike atmosphere, I wasn't totally surprised when I read that they were influenced by Twin Peaks.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 3 March 2017 00:30 (seven years ago) link

The trading game is the one constant feature of all Zeldas!

Majora's Mask is probably my favourite 3D Zelda, but then I did recently replay Windwaker on the Wii-U remaster (where you can get a 'magic sail' early on that lets you sail twice as fast and with the wind always at your back - I cannot it turns out muster any gamer's masochistic outrage over this) - man that is a sweet game. Then Ocarina, Twilight Princess - I have yet to play Swinging Sword, and to be honest I wouldn't bet on that happening before I get a Switch and devour the new one.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 3 March 2017 00:34 (seven years ago) link

Loved that little shop keeper who shocked you to death if you stolen from him.

Surprised I can't find any clips of the evil farmer or the butch villager from Ocarina shouting. That was hilarious.

I sometimes thought you had to be there to appreciate Ocarina and maybe games influenced by it taken away it's magic but I've heard some newer players say they adored it. Which is a relief.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 3 March 2017 00:44 (seven years ago) link

love that if you stole from the shop keeper the game called u THIEF instead of yr name for the rest of the game

this is what stuck out to me watching those preview vids every publication was putting together last week, like 90% of the videos were focusing on all these little management/simulation features nintendo threw in and acting like they reinvented the wheel

i'm guessing/hoping it was because the content embargo seemed to be VERY limiting and this crap was all they were allowed to talk about

but shit like foraging for food, weapon degradation, a stamina bar that looks punishing as fuck, these things have already been done a million times and they seem so extra in a zelda game of all things

qualx, Friday, 3 March 2017 05:02 (seven years ago) link

otm it looks like garbage to me

Mordy, Friday, 3 March 2017 05:04 (seven years ago) link

Saying "excuuuuuuuuse me, princess!" to your wife when she's annoyed with you is the best zelda game.

JimD, Friday, 3 March 2017 05:19 (seven years ago) link

from the giant bomb review

Most shrines feature hidden treasure chests. Frequently, these contain equipment like melee weapons, bows, or shields. I lost track of how many times I’d get to one, only to be told that my inventory was full. When this happened, I’d step away from the chest, cycle through what I was holding, and toss several items at my feet before grabbing my new toy. It’s frustrating at times, but you thankfully can upgrade your storage capacity by collecting hidden seeds and delivering them to a specific character.

dude

"10/10 best game ever - along w/its usual unrivalled sense of wonder zelda now comes with all of the annoying ish that makes WRPGs so shit!"

||||||||, Friday, 3 March 2017 07:26 (seven years ago) link

But it doesn't have the annoying shit of WRPGS. You're not endlessly updating levels and grinding for skill points. You're not running after things to craft. Your weapons break, but then you just pick up another one from the enemy or use your physics playground to take them out in other ways. Weapons breaking is not a sign you have to grind for more, it's just part of the playful unpredictability of enemy encounters. You climb towers, but not to see your map dotted with symbols you dutifully run around picking off - you have to look around the landscape yourself and see if anything interests you, mark it down and head off, even if you don't know what it is until you get there. You hear about a legendary beast or a village with a secret, but only in hints, so that exploration becomes your tool, not a GPS arrow.

This is the absolute opposite of every WRPG game. Instead of checklists _play_ is encouraged at every step of your way. Where in other such games you'd trigger a cut scene and be led to a new area, here you're choosing wether to put grass on fire to chase away guarding enemies, catapult something heavy at them or glide in from a higher level. You interact with the world in a way that seems instinctively right in the moment, not in a way you're instructed to, or that's dictated by menus and numbers.

abcfsk, Friday, 3 March 2017 12:06 (seven years ago) link

man i really like menus and numbers
