The trading game is the one constant feature of all Zeldas!

i don't remember this in any of the zeldas that preceded link's awakening!

Re: Zelda - Critics seem to like the part where you have to forage for food and cook yourself a meal to heal yourself (or something)? Yeah, I wish MarioKart made you spend time at the mechanic between races.

this is what stuck out to me watching those preview vids every publication was putting together last week, like 90% of the videos were focusing on all these little management/simulation features nintendo threw in and acting like they reinvented the wheel

i'm guessing/hoping it was because the content embargo seemed to be VERY limiting and this crap was all they were allowed to talk about

but shit like foraging for food, weapon degradation, a stamina bar that looks punishing as fuck, these things have already been done a million times and they seem so extra in a zelda game of all things

qualx, Friday, 3 March 2017 05:02 (seven years ago) link

otm it looks like garbage to me

Mordy, Friday, 3 March 2017 05:04 (seven years ago) link

Saying "excuuuuuuuuse me, princess!" to your wife when she's annoyed with you is the best zelda game.

JimD, Friday, 3 March 2017 05:19 (seven years ago) link

from the giant bomb review

Most shrines feature hidden treasure chests. Frequently, these contain equipment like melee weapons, bows, or shields. I lost track of how many times I’d get to one, only to be told that my inventory was full. When this happened, I’d step away from the chest, cycle through what I was holding, and toss several items at my feet before grabbing my new toy. It’s frustrating at times, but you thankfully can upgrade your storage capacity by collecting hidden seeds and delivering them to a specific character.

dude

"10/10 best game ever - along w/its usual unrivalled sense of wonder zelda now comes with all of the annoying ish that makes WRPGs so shit!"

||||||||, Friday, 3 March 2017 07:26 (seven years ago) link

But it doesn't have the annoying shit of WRPGS. You're not endlessly updating levels and grinding for skill points. You're not running after things to craft. Your weapons break, but then you just pick up another one from the enemy or use your physics playground to take them out in other ways. Weapons breaking is not a sign you have to grind for more, it's just part of the playful unpredictability of enemy encounters. You climb towers, but not to see your map dotted with symbols you dutifully run around picking off - you have to look around the landscape yourself and see if anything interests you, mark it down and head off, even if you don't know what it is until you get there. You hear about a legendary beast or a village with a secret, but only in hints, so that exploration becomes your tool, not a GPS arrow.

This is the absolute opposite of every WRPG game. Instead of checklists _play_ is encouraged at every step of your way. Where in other such games you'd trigger a cut scene and be led to a new area, here you're choosing wether to put grass on fire to chase away guarding enemies, catapult something heavy at them or glide in from a higher level. You interact with the world in a way that seems instinctively right in the moment, not in a way you're instructed to, or that's dictated by menus and numbers.

abcfsk, Friday, 3 March 2017 12:06 (seven years ago) link

man i really like menus and numbers

Grand Theft Triforce: Don't Starve Edition actually does sound like amazing fun

El Tomboto, Friday, 3 March 2017 12:28 (seven years ago) link

just got mine, feels nice and UI is super snappy. really appreciate how simple it is to add accounts from different regions and quickly access the different eshops on the same device. touched a cart with my tongue and it tasted awful! now to lose myself in GTA Hyrule.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 3 March 2017 13:16 (seven years ago) link

Please don't mention GTA.

Although this still sounds good, it's a worry that they're introducing things that have become really boring and homogeneous in games. SuperBunnyHop did a good video about this sort of stuff a few years ago.

JimD, Friday, 3 March 2017 15:12 (seven years ago) link

those of you with zelda pls report back on whether the gameplay is more fun / less aimless sandboxy than it looks. my initial impression is that its a game that i can just watch ppl stream and not miss out on some deep participatory experience unlike the best zelda games of the past

ciderpress, Friday, 3 March 2017 15:37 (seven years ago) link

suspect mario odyssey is the game that will actually make me break down and buy this thing, can't really get my mario64 acrobatics fix elsewhere

i will soon

art, Friday, 3 March 2017 18:12 (seven years ago) link

Played the first hour or so of Zelda. It feels like a 3D version of the first game except huuuuuuge. Nothing that has struck me as WRPG at all. Not a huge fan of the joycon thumbsticks or the v thin L & R buttons. Downloaded the Tetris PuyoPuyo demo from the JP shop, it downloaded in the background and played it on my EU account. Region free at last.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 3 March 2017 18:24 (seven years ago) link

im starting to talk myself into getting one of these now but idk what the availability is gonna be like after this first wave. is it looking like wii where you have to camp out to get one for the entire first year?

ciderpress, Friday, 3 March 2017 18:55 (seven years ago) link

Imported the japanese ps4 version of puyo-puyo tetris a while back and can confirm that it is extremely great

devvvine, Friday, 3 March 2017 18:59 (seven years ago) link

Got an hour to kill here at work then it is Zelda time! Wii U version.

I'm hype for zelda was just being a dick. screen issue is actually the first genuinely legit concern I've seen tho

Some semi-spoilers depending on what you consider spoilers -

zelda is crazy, tons of fun, a top wiiu title for sure. the graphics seem a little grainy at times if that's something that bothers you, but the art style is pretty solid, and the vibe is reminiscent of shadow of the collosus imo, in the sense of isolation in a foreign world. the story is pretty compelling so far. the real star is the mechanics. you can climb basically anything, surf on your shield, and glide eventually. probably other stuff too. i really dig cooking, you need to do it for health but also for buffs some of which are required to advance in certain areas. right now everything is still expanding in all directions but at least as of a few hours in it is really great. there are also abilities that create interesting utility in certain situations and i think at some point robots might be a thing but i can't confirm yet

art, Saturday, 4 March 2017 01:06 (seven years ago) link

make another thread immediately please

El Tomboto, Saturday, 4 March 2017 01:51 (seven years ago) link

yeh i got a Shadow of Collosus vibe too, with the isolation and the grip meter. the little details are fun too - was climbing at night and came across a camp of baddies at the top. They were asleep around the fire, but I walked too loudly which woke them up. They got up and ran to the back of the camp - haha they are scared of me I thought, so I chased after them. Then I realised too late that they'd stored all their weapons at the back and had gone to retrieve them. They turned quickly with weapons raised and suddenly it was 4 on 1. I died.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Saturday, 4 March 2017 01:56 (seven years ago) link

theres already a breath of the wild thread iirc

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 March 2017 02:17 (seven years ago) link

this is kinda boring, it's too easy to die and I can't tell where I am supposed to be going. also getting real real sick of falling off the tower and dying.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 March 2017 02:19 (seven years ago) link

damn this is sold out everywhere. i went online to almost buy this on a whim (i've heard Zelda is low-res but i use a projector) and it is sold out everywhere. i tried all the stores in my state and there is nothing in stock. then i went to amazon and found a console and Zelda for $350. by the time i got to the shipping page, it was gone, someone else had already bought it.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 4 March 2017 03:19 (seven years ago) link

that was me.
*plays awesome zelda game*

Karl Malone, Saturday, 4 March 2017 03:20 (seven years ago) link

jk, i wish nintendo was just a software company. i would love to play zelda so much right now.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 4 March 2017 03:22 (seven years ago) link

my favorite jackson browne lyric

Sufjan Grafton, Saturday, 4 March 2017 03:48 (seven years ago) link

yeah anywhere you could possibly buy it or reserve it online is sold out. supposedly the big box stores like target and best buy that do in-store purchase only have some but there's no way to know for sure without making the trip.

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 March 2017 03:53 (seven years ago) link

So it's not as big a flop as we feared?

Oh, I hope my brother buys this soon so I can try it :)

Frederik B, Saturday, 4 March 2017 09:41 (seven years ago) link

lol Sufjan. Bloodstained looks like it will be cool. and i can't believe they are actually a Castlevania cartoon. i think it involves people from Adventure Time so that's pretty promising.

i wonder if any ILXors will experience the technical issues getting reported like the controllers losing sync etc. wouldn't surprise me if that was just the internet blowing up edge cases out of proportion as usual.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 4 March 2017 21:14 (seven years ago) link

I would love to play a castlevania revamp on this thing
