Duplex was boring even by late-era IDM standards.

slugbaiting (rockapads), Friday, 1 May 2009 01:24 (fifteen years ago) link

well maybe what I feel is that it did all of the mostly good things about Walls first, minus the totally cringe bits, minus the over-polish and felt a lot more coherent. With a bit less range sure, but the range on Walls mostly extends to tracks that are pretty bad.

fandango, Friday, 1 May 2009 07:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't know what album y'all are listening to but I'm still thinking this is awesome and second only to Fever Ray this year. The DVD is pretty sweet too - mostly black & white & minimal, but very nice.

Looking forward to catching their set at Dissonanze this weekend. Like the record v.much

Modeselektor live 3 years ago was one of the most fun sets I've attended.
The minute of the Modeselektor set I saw last year turned me off them for good. Here's hoping Apparat can salvage them, doing what he did to them what he did to Ellen Allien.

Anyone else think the chorus of Stick With It should have been sung by Bowie?

StanM, Friday, 8 May 2009 10:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Depending on the version you get, you'll have two or four more tracks that aren't mentioned in any review since the promo only had 11 tracks:

http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fjfqxz9kldde = 11 tracks
http://bpitchcontrol.de/product/481 = 13 tracks
http://bpitchcontrol.de/product/526 = 15 tracks (+ DVD)

The amount of stuff that's going on in the background is amazing, I'm just discovering, listening with good headphones

StanM, Sunday, 10 May 2009 21:29 (fourteen years ago) link

One track in and I am digging this a lot.

rizzx, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 07:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, listened again last night and really enjoyed it. Except Sick With It, hafta skip that one.

it made me want to listen to Gerald Mitchell instead

I thought they were amazing at the Roundhouse the other night. Anyone else go?

I bought the album yesterday but haven't had the chance to listen to it yet.

Germanic Street Preachers (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 07:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Got the CD+DVD pack in the post yesterday from Amazon. Fantastic packaging and 4 extra tracks.

Chris in Belfast, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 11:00 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah they were brilliant at the roundhouse. the tracks sounded a lot more dubsteppy live. it's really brought me around to the album

william snakespeare (braveclub), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 11:40 (fourteen years ago) link

This album is great, maybe the best thing that either act has ever done.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I downloaded this many weeks ago, but I'm just listening to it now. Kicking myself for not doing it soon. This. Is. Great.

This album is great, maybe the best thing that either act has ever done.

I don't know Modeselektor's previous stuff, but it's not quite Orchestra Of Bubbles or Walls. Still pretty great though.

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 09:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Walls is pretty weak IMO

william snakespeare (braveclub), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 10:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Oof, have to disagree. Beautiful album IMO. Orchestra of Bubbles is the best thing he's been involved in though, for me.

Chris in Belfast, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 13:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Johnny Fever, if you downloaded it weeks ago *cough*, you might want to make sure you have the actual album version and not the promo. The promo was in mono, as mentioned elsewhere, and lacks some of the oomph of the released version.

mh, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 13:13 (fourteen years ago) link

So rich. I like it even more as time goes on.

StanM, Friday, 22 May 2009 00:22 (fourteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

I just read the press release for this and it made me laugh:

"Szary and Bronsert, both proud fathers, were on their way to the "Stadtbad Mitte" (Berlin-Mitte City Pool) with their children for their regular Monday swimming lessons when they ran into Ring, a devout bachelor who happened to be
accompanied by several dubious females."

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 19:21 (fourteen years ago) link

"Yeah, listened again last night and really enjoyed it. Except Sick With It, hafta skip that one."

That song is really, really horrible.

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 19:23 (fourteen years ago) link

So much so that I took it off my iPod.

Chris in Belfast, Thursday, 11 June 2009 12:27 (fourteen years ago) link

"Sick With It" is great!

1899 Horsey Horseless (HI DERE), Thursday, 11 June 2009 13:14 (fourteen years ago) link

"Stick With It" is the weakest song on the album (although it's far from horrible).

This is my fave album of the year thus far.

unban dictionary (blueski), Friday, 7 August 2009 14:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Listened to this album again the other day and realised it really is Apparat's contribution that makes Orchestra of Bubbles for me. There's a real 'Apparat sheen' that this, Walls and Bubbles all have in common that just does it for me. No other Ellen record has really matched up.

Matt DC, Friday, 7 August 2009 15:29 (fourteen years ago) link

There's a new Moderat compilation called "50 weapons of choice #2-9" that's all remixes and stuff, but this 2009 album of theirs, man, wow. Just heard it again after a while and it's just phenomenal.

StanM, Saturday, 2 April 2016 15:08 (eight years ago) link

I've heard the first half, there are a lot more vocals that on their other albums (that's not necessarily a bad thing, but I like when they mix it up between tracks with vocals and vocal-free bangers)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 3 April 2016 07:30 (eight years ago) link

I was at a wedding so I'm a bit drunk and this might not make any sense tomorrow but I just heard this album and life of pablo by Kanye and it's so noticeable how superior the production is on this album. Wishful thinking but i'd love to have moderat producing a kanye album. This is just sooo good a production and Kanye clearly wants to sound this good in his backtracks but doesn't know how. The mastering is fucking terrible on kanye and I want Moderat to shine in the mainstream because both modeselektor and apparat are so brilliant that they deserve to be known worldwide.

Don't mind me doesn't make sense but I'm drunk and I want to hear a moderat produced mainstream album.

Related: Finder is fucking awesome but this whole album is.

This album has really grown on me. Once I got used to the idea of a slickly produced electronic pop/R&B album with little connection to anything "techno", it was smooth sailing.

agree 100% with this.

i got the 2cd edition on a whim last week and was somewhat taken aback as i expected more of a techno vibe,
but given that i love the Rhye album, this has totally clicked with me now.

I find some of his vocals on this album a bit syrupy and overdone.

Was playing one of the angstier Moderat tunes the other day, girlfriend walks in and says 'what are you doing listening to Coldplay?' which has put me off them a bit. It's true he could do with toning down the vox sometimes.
