Damn straight, I just discovered Steve Hoffmann forums and wish I hadn't started up here. They may not be quite as smart but they aren't broken creeps like the swine on ILM. I tried for 20 years with positive and encouraging comments, got a lot of attitude in return. See y'all later

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 April 2017 19:26 (seven years ago) link

It's OK, I can easily derive your opinions by spinning the Boring Hot Take Wheel of Fortune. Or throwing a bunch of poetry magnets at a refrigerator. Or reading Greenwald's Twitter feed.

it's really quite straightforward: the 1st century had only 99 years in deference to our Lord and Saviour, who rose today

imago, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 12:33 (six years ago) link

Brief googling shows me that this is a British v. American thing:

Now here is where it becomes more confusing.

Many Americans — I cannot speak for other countries — also use the word “banister” to refer to the handrail of a staircase.

how's life, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 12:43 (six years ago) link

I think bannister is generally used in the UK to mean handrail also.

cf AA Milne, from "The King's Breakfast": ""Nobody," he said, As he slid down the banisters".

Tim, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 12:50 (six years ago) link

Yes I decided not to post that ON THIS THREAD because it's so dull.

Tim, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 12:55 (six years ago) link

also used in a popular Smiths lyric but I refuse to promote far right views

The Remoans of the May (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 May 2017 13:11 (six years ago) link

I call the handrail the banister or the rail or the handrail. The posts that hold it up are called balusters.

If I were feeling hypercorrect I might say that the handrail and balusters together constitute the banister.

If you are sliding down it, you are sliding down the entire structure, so sliding down the banister is fine either way.

Balustrade is too grand a word for a home. Balustrades are for fairy-tale palaces or dictatorial proclamation-making.

just had an absolutely killer idea: what if, in between standing outside with signs + pussy hats, we start a thread where we repost tweets calling trump dumb and his associates evil, or even worse, hypocrites? pretty sure 1000 days of that and this bad dude is cooked! also, what's this i hear about collusion with russia? someone should point that out on a message board full of academics and record reviewers!
