I mean on the one hand that DylanACOP dude has a couple of good points re: a number of the actual attendees, people who saved up to get themselves out there, etc. On the other hand, one look at what was promised in the first place and...how IS that appealing?
(I am also trying to remember that I'm 46 and not 23 or whatever, but I have to say that when I was 23 I wouldn't have found equivalent events any more appealing.)

9. Ja Rule Is The Perfect Collaborator For The Event
The four-time Grammy nominee is not planning the festival on his own, but he is the founder and his connections to the music industry mean the guest list is going to be incredible. If his name wasn't attached, it would be hard to drop so much cash without a firm lineup, but Ja Rule's connections span the music industry and beyond. He is a consummate artist who will help make sure the weekend is one of luxury, fun, and quality entertainment.

I kinda love this:
http://www.vanityfair.com/style/2017/04/fyre-festival-disaster-bahamas
Cristina Gibson, from Bravo’s Montauk-based reality show Summer House, was one of the lucky ones. She was stranded in Miami, not marooned in the Bahamas.A friend of Gibson's, like many others, booked a spot when the festival was announced in December. “I've been to festivals before,” she reasoned, phoning from South Beach. “I’ve gone to Coachella for years; I’ve gone to Governor’s Ball here in New York. So it’s not like I’m completely naive and had no idea. We checked out the Web site and thought, ‘Oh, this seems spontaneous. This looks fun. The video looks great.’ ”

A couple other users compared the situation to Fyre Festival, writing that “the world of festival promotion continues to get shadier and shadier. Everyone watched the Fyre Fest documentary and was like ‘Wait, it’s that easy?’"

so say everybody did a chargeback on their credit/debit card, how likely would the bank be to find against the buyer? does insolvency of the seller play into it at all? are 'no refunds' terms actually enforceable, or are they bullshit the same way that parking lot "we take no responsibility for damages to your car" signs are?
― CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Friday, 12 April 2024 20:56 (one month ago) link
apparently some states like California, you outright can't get out of refunding the ticket. I suspect jail time is going to happen, assuming these clowns didn't already hop a plane to a country with a no-extradition policy
― CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Friday, 12 April 2024 21:07 (one month ago) link
It sounds very much like they had no capital and decided to go ahead and try to mount the festival anyway, which is a terrible idea

I mean, they had successfully mounted the festival five times previously, so they'd earned some credibility and some goodwill. Which they burned through.
― Wreckless Erik Satie (SlimAndSlam), Saturday, 13 April 2024 13:50 (one month ago) link
Was it successfully, or was as it "with mounting debts that we stay one step ahead of", in a Barry Hogan / ATP manner?
― Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 13 April 2024 15:52 (one month ago) link
Regardless, I think the point is that fans had no reason to suspect they were hucksters (it sounds like they even canceled the “right” way back in 2020). With Fyre Fest, there was an element of “why did you trust this shady Instagram thing”
― rendered nugatory (morrisp), Saturday, 13 April 2024 16:04 (one month ago) link
At the time of Fyre Fest, the other festival that came to mind as having gone under with a problematic refund policy was Sunset Junction in L.A., which has never been mounted since though for years before that had devolved far from its original intent as a welcoming neighborhood festival I didn't do something a bit more exclusionary and disruptive to the local businesses and residents. I wonder if there was any weirdness surrounding this one beforehand that got overlooked because they were able to pull it off.
