I call the handrail the banister or the rail or the handrail. The posts that hold it up are called balusters.

If I were feeling hypercorrect I might say that the handrail and balusters together constitute the banister.

If you are sliding down it, you are sliding down the entire structure, so sliding down the banister is fine either way.

Balustrade is too grand a word for a home. Balustrades are for fairy-tale palaces or dictatorial proclamation-making.

just had an absolutely killer idea: what if, in between standing outside with signs + pussy hats, we start a thread where we repost tweets calling trump dumb and his associates evil, or even worse, hypocrites? pretty sure 1000 days of that and this bad dude is cooked! also, what's this i hear about collusion with russia? someone should point that out on a message board full of academics and record reviewers!

I don't get fan edits, not sure why one would prefer the vision of some dude in a basement with some video editing software over that of the director. But hey

even if one does subscribe to auteur theory, i have a hard time defending peter jackson's "vision" for _the hobbit_, for instance

but mostly it's that i like remix culture and the existence of one doesn't nullify the other. :)

The only reason I'm sanguine about your presence on the boards is that the last year has impressed on me the importance of understanding low information voters, and goddammit, they don't get more low information than you, you walking Voat thread.

Yeah and on a tangentially related topic, cf. the persistent misapplication of stoic analgesics in how people discuss disease.

Like praising the "courage" of someone who is "fighting cancer." OMG, she's so brave, he's battling cancer, he lost his fight with cancer, she kicked cancer's ass, etc. There's a narrow tightrope of tone. One understandably wants to praise courage. But turn it a notch further, and it implies that people who are completely fucking terrified kinda deserve to die. We want to praise self-reliance and resilience, but doing so always carries a risk of victim-blaming.

Human dignity doesn't just apply to "brave" "upbeat" "fighters." It also applies to people whose response to something terrible is... terror. People who respond with sorrow to that which is sorrowful.

Viewing extinction through a moralizing human lens is a silliness

What's with the thread-policing tonight? Who made you think you are the sheriff of this town all of a sudden?

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 00:03 (six years ago) link

"I don't think he's inherently evil or machiavellian or anything, he just can't help being how he is because he was never taught otherwise. Anyone who ever refuses anything he demands gets fired, anything that goes wrong is always someone else's fault, he's incapable of doing anything wrong in his mind because he's always been right - he's been surrounded by yes-men and enablers his whole life because of how capitalism works. This makes him extremely dangerous (he won't deliberately destroy the world, but all it takes is a little suggestion from the truly evil realpolitik guys who have really been ruling the world before he got here: e.g. if enough people can convince him (using something the length of a Tweet because he has the attention span of a goldfDID SOMEONE SAY GOLD? We have the biggest amount of gold in the world-and not only that, the BEST gold! Everyone is talking about it!) that nuking Iran would be the best way to prove he's the most important man in the world, then by god, he will just go and push the button. Whoever refuses gets fired ("who's the president, you or me?"). The nuclear war that happens later won't be his fault, because this or that advisor had told him it wouldn't happen, it's clearly that guy's fault. Stop persecuting him.

In short: he's the product of his surroundings and there's nothing that can be done (impeach? he never did anything wrong! it was those disrussians who disrupted everything!). It's only a matter of time before he accidentally does something truly apocalyptic."

Not posted to Trump thread because I should stay out of politics threads and also meh, it doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks.
