I was gonna let sund4r post about this but...perhaps of interest to the imago household:

https://www.tinymixtapes.com/news/colin-stetson-featured-prog-noise-project-ex-eye-release-self-titled-debut-album-share-track-op

Few can resist feeling the new joy that the start of summer brings. For men and women of all ages, it’s the time to shift to lighter-weighted colorful patterns, spend weekends in the backyard tuning up bicycles and barbecue grills, and plan what will eventually turn out to be tortuous family excursions to the country or beach house. For others, like the Colin Stetson-featured, free-thinking, prog-metal foursome EX EYE it means losing all inhibitions by setting new parameters in accelerated decibels, tearing eardrums and collapsing sphincters with its machine-shop-pounding, narcotic freefall noise, and releasing a self-titled debut album on June 23, when everything is still as fresh as an egg from the farm!

In addition to Stetson on alto and bass saxophones, EX EYE features the sickeningly versatile talents of Greg Fox(Liturgy, Guardian Angel, Skeletons, Zs),Shahzad Ismaily (Secret Chiefs 3, Causing a Tiger, Ceramic Dog) and Toby Summerfield (Never Enough Hope, Crush Kill Destroy) on drums, synths, and guitars respectively.

If there were any doubts as to the intensity of this debut disc, it bears noting that it IS coming out on Relapse. If you need audio affidavits of proof, listen to the 12+ magnificent loud and fast minutes of “Opposition/Perihelion; The Coil” down below. EX EYE(the album) is out June 23 on CD, LP and digital and can be pre-ordered by clicking here or here.

In addition, EX EYE have some live dates booked for June and August and just played at the 33rd edition of the Festival International Musique Actuelle Victoriaville last week. At the same fest,Stetson performed “Sorrow,” his “reimagining of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony,” as an 11-piece ensemble including Fox and Ismaily, Rebecca Foon (Saltland, Esmerine), Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre), Gyða Valtýsdóttir (múm), Amanda Lo, and Stetson’s sister Megan, the mezzo-soprano. Check out Stetson solo show dates below, after you check out the EX EYE infos. Start the summer in style!

EX EYE tracklisting:

1. Xenolith: The Anvil
2. Opposition/Perihelion; The Coil
3. Anaitis Hymnal; The Akrose Disc
4. Form Constant; The Grid

That could be cool! Especially if there's evidence of thoughtful composition amidst the sound and fury. Will check out exploring else itt soon as well...

Remember though, tomorrow is Richard Dawson Day...

Are there still bands like The Frogs or Butthole Surfers or like GodWeenSatan-era Ween? I dunno if this is the place to ask, but maybe it is.

Did you listen to the Stabscotch album yet?

imago, Thursday, 1 June 2017 11:44 (six years ago) link

Not fussed about Stetson's solo jams but that press release does a good job of getting me hyped

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 1 June 2017 13:15 (six years ago) link

Going to admit that, while I shared the press release with D.A.M. when I saw it, I didn't get a chance to listen to the sample track until now (which is why I didn't post about it). It sounds good, though! I really like Stetson's sound but sometimes find his solo repertoire a little limited, compositionally, so it's good to see him integrate it into this framework. (I haven't heard his take on Gorecki tbh.)

I've tried out Stabscotch several times but I don't really get it. I'll keep trying.

I can't get enough of this record right now, and I think it fits-ish here-ish:

You might be thinking of this thread

Rolling "Experimental Is A Shitty Descriptor But Whatev" 2017

That's the minimal thread. This is the maximal thread.

o wow! ^______^ this is gr8!

also also yeah this has been mentioned elsewhere (orange milk thread) but the new death's dynamic shroud album is very awesome and a significant milestone in rolling attention deficit 2017

xxxp I can't decide if Macula Dog is quite good or supremely irritating or both. I mean it's some impressively weird pop-something-wave but the cheapo sounds set my teeth on edge (this is probably intentional lol). But by god I despise that entire record label's ugly sense of aesthetics, again it's probably intentional, but ugh.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 22 August 2017 17:54 (six years ago) link

this quick brown fox album is great :)
reminds me of the chart show in the early 90s

nxd, Wednesday, 23 August 2017 08:35 (six years ago) link

I enjoyed it the one time I listened. I'll pull it out again. Hamilton ON has had a cool little mini-scene of avant electronic music for a while.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 13:57 (six years ago) link

one month passes...

This should have some crossover appeal with people who like the Stabscotch album:

https://gasplapsychviolence.bandcamp.com/album/ghost-in-scow-out-1-week-free-download

Weirdo psychedelic hardcore band that combined noise rock, powerviolence and queasy tape loops and haven't released anything since the late 90s, suddenly re-emerging now. It's a reunion very few people were clamouring for but 1998's Drome Triler of Puzzle Zoo People is a hidden gem, serious.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 4 October 2017 19:35 (six years ago) link

posted in orange milk thread, but it's probably a good fit here too. grindcore pop made out of breaks and edm synths
https://orangemilkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/because-im-young-arrogant-and-hate-everything-you-stand-for

also new goreshit, in "goretrance" mode, which is basically ADD breakcore versions of sugary 90s trance/house.
https://goreshit.bandcamp.com/album/goretrance-x

...and have to mention new SAYOHIMEBOU again just because it's so good, and a fine embodiment of thread thesis

For those compiling your year-end lists, this playlist includes all the available tracks on this thread as well as all the tracks from Rolling "Experimental Is A Shitty Descriptor But Whatev" 2017 (division be damned), organized sorta-not-really chronologically in order of mention:

^in the same area code as the Stabscotch, though obv this cannot match that sprawl (few records can). You could prob say they're like a more psychedelic Brainiac...?
Loving it, regardless

the underground is pass-agg (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 7 December 2017 21:59 (six years ago) link

new goreshit "memestreet" https://goreshit.bandcamp.com/ basically noise rock/mathcore realized as edm. 2017 is the year breakcore broke as punk

Dominique, Friday, 8 December 2017 14:50 (six years ago) link

I gave Stabscotch another open-minded shot today while reviewing stuff for my EOY and I think the singer sounds like Justin Roiland.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:48 (six years ago) link

two weeks pass...

what are we gonna do this year then

imago, Monday, 1 January 2018 19:44 (six years ago) link

can the dry ambient mnmlst nonsense of 'rolling experimental' happily coexist with the exciting irritating madness of attention deficit once more

imago, Monday, 1 January 2018 19:46 (six years ago) link

of course, you are basically the only person who thinks otherwise but we're all happy to play along if it's what you want to do.
