the fact that the inventors of twitter intended the —status update— to be literal is a delightful historical curio
― lag∞n, Monday, 5 June 2017 13:21 (six years ago) link
the current use is a lot different from the original intended use!
I think my first twitter update was something like "ok about to leave work!"

Yes. Amber Harrison has a few withheld in Australia.
― Vernon Locke, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 01:11 (six years ago) link
is it because those governments are requesting they be censored?
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:09 (six years ago) link
wow thats pretty fucked up
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:11 (six years ago) link
lots of other governments are pretty strict about some shit that's fucked up to usI remember seeing requests direct to the US government to shut down accounts that made fun of crown princes
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:27 (six years ago) link
Since we basically DGAF, Twitter, FB et al take things into their own hands so they can keep doing business in those markets
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:29 (six years ago) link
France, though, that's weird and unpleasant
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:30 (six years ago) link
huh that's interesting. i'd only heard about compliance with mass censorship in turkey.

I remember a Newsweek story from the 90s with a lead of "This story will not be published in our Candian edition." Something about a man accused of killing his wife, and it was such a big deal, police were trying to sequester the whole country - even checking for any printed material coming into Canada that had something written about the case.
― pplains, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:53 (six years ago) link
Some of what I just wrote is a little inaccurate, but close enough for remembering something from 24 years ago: http://www.newsweek.com/barbie-ken-murders-190684
― pplains, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:56 (six years ago) link
It's particularly ineffective because the "translate this tweet from Anglais?" link is still there, and expands a French translation of the original tweet (which is in English), regardless. So you end up with a much more accessible version than just displaying the original would have done!
I'm just confused about the policy around this, and who makes the decision to suppress a tweet. FWIW the orig. says that there wouldn't have been a London Bridge attack if muslims weren't living there. would the actual French government have requested suppression based on hate-speech laws? If so, I'm kind of.... okay with that maybe??
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 07:20 (six years ago) link
Or maybe it's Twitter being proactive? (In which case how come R1ch4rd Spenc3r still gets to post the shit he posts?)
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 08:17 (six years ago) link
is it twitter just preemptively censoring stuff that could/would fall foul of local hate-speech laws? (rather than the French govt requesting specific tweets be blocked?)
― soref, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 08:44 (six years ago) link
Germany has had some tweets by Geert Wilders withheld recently iirc
― Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 11:30 (six years ago) link
yeah twitter is full of dead-eyed americans demanding ethnic cleansing so hate speech laws might be the trigger here. really wonder how twitter is implementing this, everything they do is so half-assed
― goole, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 17:03 (six years ago) link

There are a lot of Twitter users whose best tweets I like, and who I would like to follow except that they tweet WAY too much and thus would completely overwhelm my feed. Wish I could filter to only show their most-liked tweets (I realize that twitter kind of does this already, and Nuzzel can help). Basically if someone tweets more than like 5x a day, they lost me.

Twitter has permanently suspended al Jazeera's Arabic account, something I am sure has nothing to do with KSA's Prince Alwaleed being Twitter's second largest shareholder.

In my opinion... twitter.com is a dud website. I mean... I like getting status updates from my buddies , especially when they are at a trendy restaurant , but all this political talk is for the birds. I'm like... enough already you guys.

― marcos, Thursday, 22 June 2017 14:00 (six years ago) link
either that or i need to do a purge and follow different people
I find it useful for keeping up with certain things professionally and otherwise. But over the last year its becoming harder to use, the main problem is people retweeting bad people and it makes me feel on edge. It seemed to start with Trump but now its just any random person who thinks homeless people should be deported or something.
People retweeting this stuff to say "look at this bad person". Maybe I'm too much wanting to live in a fluffy world but I'm finding it more unpleasant to use because of this. I'm private, I don't follow many people, none of the people I follow are irritating per se. I know i can switch off the retweets but I learn about good dev stuff from retweets
