the playing of long-necked lutes in adverts for insurance

That lute is not historically accurate for the period of the founding of London, nor for the founding year of that insurance company, nor for whatever period is supposed to be evoked by a swan-shaped paddleboat. And none of it goes with his outfit. So what the actual royal fuck?

i really really REALLY fucking hate it when companies do something incredibly obvious that they should have done years ago and say "we listened":

You asked (a lot). We listened. Amazon Prime Video is coming to the TV App and all Apple TVs this year.

— Amazon Video (@AmazonVideo) June 5, 2017

lol no you didn't, fuck off.

christ i hate that kind of corporate twitterspeak, it's always something like that or this

"Hey. We admit it. We screwed up. And to make up for it, for the next six hours, we're taking 10% off all online orders. And shipping is free."

nomar, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 18:08 (six years ago) link

i'm also IA about most comedy movies lately, they all seem to cast from the same pool of ten people and are all about suburban squares getting turnt or just generally losing their shit -- 'office christmas party', 'horrible bosses', 'rough night', 'sisters', 'neighbors', the forthcoming release 'the house' (w/of course will ferrell and amy poehler), any number of others. i guess this has been a trend for awhile but damn i don't need to see any movies like this again nor any of these people in any movie again.

I'm pissed that no local stores carry the 4 kg bag of Purina Dog Chow anymore, and if Purina has discontinued that size, I'm pissed at them.

First of all, when did you move to Canada? Because even though you're speaking English and your time stamp matches mine, there's some funny "kg" gibberish popping up in your post.

Second, you make a valid point. What is going on here?

4lb bag costs 6 dollars

So does an 8 lb bag (a little less than 4kg) = $12?

No, but the the 16.5 lb bag is only $12.50!

It pisses me off that weather forecasts vary so much. Weather channel telling me low 90s this weekend. Some other app I have calling for almost 110! I assume no one is outright inventing the numbers, and have to be getting the numbers from somewhere, so why do the forecasts differ so much?

The local newspaper shop has new weekend staff. They have given me the wrong change the last 6 times I've been in there. I'm embarrassed to go in there again. (Yesterday for example, i got 1.10 change from a fiver for a 2.90 paper. Sometimes they give me too much, but that's easier to fix)

And today I have a voucher for the observer, it'll blow their tiny minds.

My memory stick appears to be dying after 6 months use.
Have noticed it is over heating, Or is at least really really hot.
It's the one that I was complaining about being too small a few months ago. I'm just realising taht heat may be down to there not being any way for it to cool down because it is so small, not sure though. Is that true of every memory stick anyway?

But programmes I'm watching on it are just cutting out at random points which I'm assuming is related to it overheating.
I'll be in the middle fo somebody speaking and it will just cut out and restart.

Shame since it was a 32GB thing which was useful.

Now got a new larger thing but it seems to be taking forever for things to load to it.
I'm getting stuck with single tv programme files claiming that they are going to take 15 hours to transfer which is ridiculous.

May have gone down a technology generation in what I bought locally. USB 2 not 3 but that can't be right.

the metaphor "a car crash in slow motion"

if the car is in slow motion there will be no crash

mark s, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 10:34 (six years ago) link

That one's pretty irrational, clearly it means a car crash in slow motion you can't avoid/stop, even though it is in slow motion.

I'm positive I've posted this before, because it's a perennial, but I hate it when you slow or stop your car to let someone get across the street, and they always give you a courtesy wave and like .5 seconds of hustle, like they're launching themselves off the curb, but as soon as they step out into the road they just take their time. Sometimes for added frustration they'll make a few extra motions, like pumping arms or grimacing or a little waddle, just for effect, even though they don't actually move any faster.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 11:56 (six years ago) link

when you go to restaurants and order something from the menu and they're all like "we don't have that anymore".

not 'we're out of it', but 'lol not an option'.

When someone accidentally ends up in a turn-only lane when they want to go straight, and instead of putting a turn signal on, stopping and waiting for an opportunity to get into the proper lane, just keeps going forward parallel to another car, trying to outrace it. It feels crazy, since you're not expecting there to be a car right next to you after the lane ends.

I actually drafted mine! What's been postponed is the meeting between me, my team lead, and the program manager, where they actually give me feedback. When it comes to meetings in general, I'm more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, and the postponements are just ramping up the tension. I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT!

Diana Fire (j.lu), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 17:45 (six years ago) link

However things work out, j.lu, your instincts are probably right that you can and should look for something new.

If your review goes well, it shows you're of value, and you deserve a workplace that doesn't make you this anxious. If it goes poorly, well, then, that's evidence that it's not a great fit and it's to everyone's benefit for you to find a greener pasture.

Another traffic thing which shits me is people who break a traffic rule supposedly out of courtesy, e.g. appearing to give way to you when they're not supposed to, but leave you wondering what they're going to do because they seem to regard traffic rules as a kind of guideline subject to personal waiver. e.g. letting you cross their lane while stopped at lights, but continuing to inch forward a bit so you're not sure if the gap will be there when you try to take up the offer. Argh I'm not expressing this properly, contributing to IA.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 21:57 (six years ago) link

I know what you mean. that drives me nuts too cos the 'charity' only winds up annoying the people behind that driver and contributing to a more dangerous situation since the person they're accommodating isn't expecting the gesture.

in other words - "just go"
