Gorgeous, wonderful movie, so astoundingly underrated.

Really, everything he did following my dn's namesake was top notch (although I might need to see Tanner on Tanner again to be sure).

Here's my list. No room for an Altman, unfortunately, although The Company would be my 21st century pick.

How many lists have you done in the last month, Alfred?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:10 (six years ago) link

Certified Copy aside, 2010 was maybe the worst year for movies in my natural life.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:11 (six years ago) link

I usually write a list a day with my morning smoothie.

2002 wasn't awesome either, I noticed.

No way, I loved 2002:

We share many of those films but I'm not passionate about'em, if that makes sense (it doesn't have to).

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:37 (six years ago) link

(Plus, I think a lot of them were 2003 in the U.S.)

NYT list reads like a clap back against vulgar auteurism on second glance.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:46 (six years ago) link

If only all your mania for listmaking could be channeled into advocacy for preferential voting.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:53 (six years ago) link

Remind me, in brief, what "vulgar auteurism" is. Worshipping trash, right?

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:55 (six years ago) link

In a nutshell, preferring Paul W.S. Anderson to Paul Thomas Anderson.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:56 (six years ago) link

My capacity for preferential ranking is universal.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:58 (six years ago) link

top five worst Jake Gyllenhaal haircuts – go

I can't do these over a morning smoothie. I need time to carefully consider. But ...

1. Bubble Boy

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 15:01 (six years ago) link

2. that boxing movie where he was ripped like a roid queen

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 15:03 (six years ago) link

There's nothing vulgar about preferring anyone over Paul Thomas Andersson. And 2010 is the year of Uncle Boonmee, Aurora, Mysteries of Lisbon, Film Socialisme. Nothing wrong with that.

re: Almodovar - I loved his most recent one Julieta, and Broken Embraces.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 17:07 (six years ago) link

Loved Broken Embraces as well.

1. Zodiac
2. No Country for Old Men
3. No Direction Home: Bob Dylan
4. The Heart of the Game
5. The Squid and the Whale
6. Elephant
7. Spellbound
8. Lost in Translation
9. The Social Network
10. You Can Count on Me
11. Carlos
12. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
13. Wendy and Lucy
14. Boyhood
15. Best of Enemies
16. O.J. Simpson: Made in America
17. At Berkeley
18. School of Rock
19. Ghost World
20. Angels in America

I liked almost all of these immediately; #12 and #18 grew on me more slowly. Except for At Berkeley, I’ve seen all them anywhere from twice to a ridiculous number of viewings for the top two.

clemenza, Thursday, 15 June 2017 00:13 (six years ago) link

I loved Perks of Being a Wallflower, although still baffled that those kids wouldn't know who was singing "'Heroes.'"

flappy bird, Thursday, 15 June 2017 00:35 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I wrote about that. It's so egregious, I've come to find it more funny than annoying, and them not knowing is used really well as a dramatic device, if you can buy it. And again, I could maybe accept that they don't know "Heroes"--highly unlikely, but possible. Not knowing "Heroes" while you are swapping tapes with the Shaggs and Nick Drake on there, that I find literally impossible.

clemenza, Thursday, 15 June 2017 00:50 (six years ago) link

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan

No place on my list.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 15 June 2017 04:00 (six years ago) link

O.J. is a (slightly) above-avg ESPN TV series.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 15 June 2017 11:14 (six years ago) link

ah shit i forgot One Hour Photo, too.

flappy bird, Thursday, 15 June 2017 16:48 (six years ago) link

I didn't realize Decasia was 2002. Put it on your list or go home.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 15 June 2017 18:58 (six years ago) link

On my 2002 list.

I feel like LEGO Batman might have been a better choice if they had to have a token cartoon that makes people cry.
The LEGO Movie itself is probably better than a few of these choices though.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 18 June 2017 00:25 (six years ago) link

nah the token "cartoon that made people cry" was Up in 2009. just that first sequence. I think after that Pixar thought they had to do it with every movie. I never saw Toy Story 3 bc the reactions were just ridiculous - "oh my god, i couldn't stop crying, it was so sad and wistful and melancholic!" God, sounds horrible.

Not to mention four votes for Summer Hours and two for an Agnes Varda flick.

i wonder how many other Yang films the typical Yi Yi voter has seen -- you know, the ones you have to see twice to comprehend what's going on

I saw Mahjong and A Brighter Summer Day on shitty YouTube uploads several years ago, but I care about these things.

I wonder how many other Yang films were made in this century? Oh, none? Is it none? Oh, OK then.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 July 2017 13:06 (six years ago) link

I never said otherwise, but you're probably lightheaded from your most recent Showgirls viewing.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck alllllllllll liiiiiiiiiiiists

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 July 2017 15:02 (six years ago) link

If by lightheaded you mean giddy, exhilarated, reveling in the pleasure that movies can give you if you enjoy either life or movies? Sure. Yeah.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 July 2017 15:10 (six years ago) link

Or cocktails.

Stuart Byron or Byron Buxton?

(Yi Yi wasn't made in this century either)
