Those signal overhauls may not get done in that 100-year timeline

Things got so bad on a delayed subway this AM that people jumped from the emergency exit and walked along the track https://t.co/DJZYDFsyJT

lol I know someone who works for Riders Alliance She was recently ON a train that stopped for so long that passengers walked through tunnels to escape. She posted to facebook like "IRONICALLY this is the first time I've had to evacuate from the MTA!" and the first comment was, "Hey, I can recommend a good organization for that...."

β€œI will vouch for reports that the train left the rails,” said Mary Hodges, who was on the A train. β€œNo doubt. We were in the air. I’m pretty sure we scraped the sides of the tunnel wall. But I couldn’t swear it.”

β€œWe were going fast and all of a sudden I felt this big bump, like it went up in the air and rocked side to side in the air, off the tracks,” said Carrie Courogen, of Washington Heights. β€œI flew up off my seat and onto the ground. It came to a screeching halt. We saw sparks. It smelled so bad, like burnt rubber.”

β€œA couple of people tried to open windows or doors to get out. We were just sitting there and no one tried to tell us over the intercom,” she added. β€œWe had no idea what was going on. Finally after ten minutes the conductor gets on and she’s like, β€˜We have a derailment, we’re coming through the cars.’ It was very terse.”

β€œI landed on my butt in the middle of the car, the lights went out and people freaked out,” said Ritch Duncan, 44. β€œThere was a four foot gash in the floor. People were discussing getting on the tracks, others were warning of the third rail. The main things I was afraid of then were other people panicking and smoke which we started to smell.”

We usually get these alerts only in the event of blizzards and hurricanes. Now my company is declaring a subway emergency. @NYGovCuomo pic.twitter.com/ND9zbMtXf7

On the bright side, the new South Ferry 1 station opened today! Ceremony was canceled, however.

I call on all New Yorkers to make their voices heard and join me in opposing this terrible legislation.

NYC subway works well for me

Off-topic somewhat, but has anyone here ever been on a train that hit a "jumper"?

Two weeks ago (June 23) my F train hit a jumper at Jay St. The guy died. It was the second time I've had that experience. Don't know exactly how common this is, but it seems that in such cases if no details about the victim come forth immediately the story gets buried.

Josefa, Saturday, 8 July 2017 03:30 (six years ago) link

I was on a train that hit someone while I was in the front of the front car. It wasn't a jumper, but someone who was on the tracks trying get out I think (there was some map of subway accidents that I found that had a listing for it at a much later date).

It was pretty shocking - motorman laying on the horn, swearing, slamming brakes, the sound of the impact, more swearing, yelling that it was 'a 12-9', police walking us off, me and my friend choosing to stare straight ahead to avoid seeing anything gruesome.

This eve the train I was on laid on the horn super hard at one point coming into a station - it still really unnerves me.

chinavision!, Saturday, 8 July 2017 03:39 (six years ago) link

I just use Google or Apple maps when I want to find the fastest route fyi.

chinavision!, Saturday, 8 July 2017 03:40 (six years ago) link

But Kickmap is what I use for a subway map-specific app because it is more legible and attractive.

chinavision!, Saturday, 8 July 2017 03:40 (six years ago) link

Yeah, with this last incident the brakes were slammed on abruptly and there was an unnerving delay of five minutes or so before the first announcement - "we have a possible injured passenger at the front of the train," this repeated about 10 times before they finally evacuated us through the car second from the front.

Josefa, Saturday, 8 July 2017 03:52 (six years ago) link

i promise not to do it during rush hour

mookieproof, Saturday, 8 July 2017 04:16 (six years ago) link

it's a pretty distinct experience for sure

chinavision!, Saturday, 8 July 2017 05:22 (six years ago) link

i think i mention upthread about when i jumped on the tracks to help get a woman who fell in out. that's distinct too.
