My goodness, was invited to the record store basement, snapped 16 used records, including stuff like R. Hood's Monobox, Mike Shannon, Sieg Uber Die Sonne, and the biggest headfuck of all Alex Under's Multiplicanciones 2, which I've been looking for for years, and haven't been able to get online, out of nowhere, and used!

I'm pleased.

Yeah I know, but I've only ever ordered things off Forced exposure, and I've only ordered things online twice (I guess my comment was kind of misleading or, uhhh, just untrue).

Edward Saroyan, Thursday, 7 May 2009 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link

And it's still less than half the price of any of those, before shipping etc.

Edward Saroyan, Thursday, 7 May 2009 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link

huh, i got that record in Cleveland for $4 in 06. not my favorite work of his, i must admit.

actually, scartch that, 'D' is quite a nice track and i've used it in sets once in a while.

Hooray! I got that Hardrive s/t record I talked about upthread (although sans original sleeve, which is totally :( also the sound is kind of shitty, worse than the 192ish Mp3 I had, which is kind of ???

underground music, underwater sound quality?

elan, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 01:40 (fourteen years ago) link

is it a boot or just crappy record-pressing or mastering?

the table is the table, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 01:50 (fourteen years ago) link

It's an original copy, sounds like poor mastering - all mid tone, but on certain tracks thoughs (the ddep inside dub sounds relatively fine but the original mix doesn't)

I had never even heard of this until a week ago...

that's the sort of track the term "hot mess" was invented for

Whoa. Did Peacefrog just unleash a bunch of stuff online? Beatport and Rhapsody both now have Moodymann's "Black Mahogani," which I could have sworn wasn't available on download.

In similar news, Sun Electric's Present is available as well! Keep it comin', R&S...

pshrbrn, Thursday, 14 May 2009 17:23 (fourteen years ago) link

i have a track id:

i think it's called "keep on rising" by the funky green dogs, but as far as i can tell, they don't have a song by that name. the lyrics are "keep on rising, got to keep on rising." something like that.

ANYBODY?

elan, Thursday, 14 May 2009 22:36 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't know that one but High Up is my all time fav. Funky Green Dogs track.

xpost - speaking of Dave Angel, his 32 Flavours of Tech-Funk, while horribly titled, is actually excellent...

Just listening to some old cuts and Origami by Wastepaper on Paper Recordings reminded my why I loved Paper so much. Great tune.

Main Street Records stuff is my shit the now. I'm your brother is a cracker.

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Friday, 22 May 2009 22:05 (fourteen years ago) link

round one! love that track. i still haven't got a copy of that 12".

one time, Friday, 22 May 2009 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

sadly, the pressing on the main street stuff ain't so hot -- at least, not on round two, "new day." i actually asked moritz about that in an interview a couple of weeks back, and he said that they had that record pressed in chicago (or detroit, but i think chicago), and the poor result was part of the inspiration for starting up D+M.

amazing fucking tune, though.

pshrbrn, Saturday, 23 May 2009 04:42 (fourteen years ago) link

The original pressings of Basic Channel related records were cut by Ron Murphy at NSC and pressed at Archer in Detroit.

My copy of "I'm Your Brother" sounds fine, but maybe it is ruff and i just don't notice 'cause it kinda suits the tune.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 May 2009 08:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I love that tune so much.

one time you should check out the ep with "moved" and "flatfunk" on it...forget which label it was on, really good stuff.

Finally picked this up on cd yesterday after years of having it on tape: http://www.discogs.com/Derrick-Carter-The-Many-Shades-Of-Cajual/release/244917

The review by the guy on discogs sums it up perfectly. What a great mix. So nice to hear dj's taking risks - not sure if you could replicate the excitement DC does here using Ableton... but anyway.

sam500, Monday, 8 June 2009 05:08 (fourteen years ago) link

It really is the best mix

sous les paves, Monday, 8 June 2009 05:22 (fourteen years ago) link

working on a new mix...mostly 2000s era minimal bobbins right now, tho starts out with something new.

Dirk Lamprecht- Jack
Agnes- Meg White (this track never fails to make me swoon)
Alex Under- D (all about the last couple minutes here, with those thundering chords and backward churning)
Minilogue- Bird Song (wish this one didn't peter out towards the end, but beautiful nonetheless)
D'Julz- Flick It! (D3 Mix) (original is kinda mediocre, remix is lush and slamming)

going into a bit more heady territory soon (GEZ VARLEY), but still keeping with an older minimal vibe...

so, speaking of Cajual etc., can we talk about Spencer Kincey/Gemini? this shit is killing me right now.

I really liked "Pelargonium" back in the 1990s, so I got the album it's on, I think it was called Fog and Lights or something? Wasn't too impressed by it back then, I thought sounded a bit too smooth and nice. It's been 10+ years since I last listened to his stuff though, maybe should give it a new try?

Tuomas, Sunday, 21 June 2009 12:10 (fourteen years ago) link

In and out of fog and lights is great, I think this and the 'In Neutral' album put out around the same time were on a driving theme.

(I'm not much for the rave stuff, but I keep a copy of Dead Eye in my crate)

http://www.thedailyswarm.com/swarm/eon-rip/

Legendary ‘rave’ producer Eon, a.k.a. Ian Loveday, passed away Wednesday, June 17, from complications with pneumonia. He was one of the first producers to gain popularity amongst the late-80s/early-90s rave scene with hits like “Spice” and “Fear the Mind Killer”, the sound being a link between early techno and modern breakbeat.

As Eon, his tracks made their way to early 90s pirate radio stations in London, and then out on vinyl through small labels like BAAD and Vinyl Solution. He would release his most well-known tracks on the seminal album, ‘Void Dweller’ in 1992 at the height of the spread of modern dance music in the US. ‘Void Dweller’, with the hit ‘Spice’ owing its recognizable hook to a sample from David Lynch’s movie “Dune”, was one of the first major label releases, on Columbia, for producers in the burgeoning rave scene.

His work saw release on numerous labels over the years, including Hooj Toons and XL Recordings. In ‘93 he teamed up with fellow British acid pioneer Peter ‘Baby’ Ford, producing many classic tracks including ‘Dead Eye’ which would eventually be released as a single on Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 label. Loveday would go on to release under his Minimal Man moniker up until just before his death.

Eon performed live at Fabric and on Radio One over the years, and worked with producers like Mark Moore (S’Express) and Marcus J Knight. Most recently, he had been busy in the studio with long time collaborator Baby Ford on some new projects.

I've never noticed this before, but compare The Black Dog's "Barbola Work" (1994):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIYtXMt4jUo

To Isolée's "Beau mot plage" (1999):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y66nvB-PvZQ

If you leave out the intro and the outro of "Barbola Work", the sound and the way the tunes are constructed is pretty similar, don't you think?

Tuomas, Saturday, 4 July 2009 16:55 (fourteen years ago) link

congratulations tuomas, you've discovered "latin"

so, because the Gemini stuff has been killing me so hard, i went on a hunt...and jesus: http://www.5chicago.com/features/april2009/sign-of-the-gemini.html.

Gemini is nowhere to be found.

For many years, there have been rumors circulating about what happened to Spencer. He made a well-publicized move to the Bay Area prior to 2000, giving Chicago - or at least some people in the industry back home - a kiss-off with the acrid track "Swimmin' Wit' Sharks". And so far as anyone knows what happened, that's when something went terribly, terribly wrong.

Gemini was back in Chicago not long after, minus his studio equipment, his DJ gear, or any visible means of support. To the few he encountered, he didn't seem himself. He cut almost all ties, even with people who had known him for years. On one occasion when he was recognized, he vowed revenge on a couple of well-known Chicago House Music producers who he claimed had stolen his music from a laptop. At the time, according to someone who talked with him, he was panhandling - staying in an SRO when he had a good day, a shelter when he didn't.

What had gone wrong? Spencer was still giving interviews as late as 2001, but within a year or two, it all ended. No more tracks, no more gigs, and lifelong friends worried that something was seriously wrong. They couldn't do more than worry: most of them have never seen him again.

this might be my new mission in life: to find Spencer Kincy.

When you mentioned him upthread, I checked his Discogs entry and was kinda wondering why he'd stopped releasing stuff after 2000. It's sad to hear what's happened to him, hopefully he will get better eventually.

Tuomas, Monday, 6 July 2009 19:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Shit, I had no idea. I was enjoying his 'In And Out Of Fog And Lights' on Peacefrog just the other day.

sam500, Monday, 6 July 2009 19:57 (fourteen years ago) link

it is a totally wild and sad story. he turned 40 about a month ago, apparently, though no one knows if he's even alive? :(

Table's comment upthread made me listen to that album for the first time in years... It was better than what I remembered, and "Pelargonium" still kicks ass. Such a pretty and peaceful groove.

(x-post)

Tuomas, Monday, 6 July 2009 20:05 (fourteen years ago) link

i remember getting turned on to gemini by a list of house producers who've seen hard times, homelessness etc. it's like anything, i guess. i really like 'fog and lights' too.
