i like that there seems to be genuine affection between the 4 - like Biancas season with Adore, Courtney & Darienne: that crew are still friends to this day which i think is cool
― Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 24 June 2017 19:47 (six years ago) link
also now that i've seen Sasha fully lipsync twice, i realized that she has an Annie Lennox vibe that I never caught before ... and I like that she has built on a variation of the Latrice school of "stand & emote" lipsyncing which is still a perennial favorite
god it was an enjoyable finale. so much more watchable & interesting & less like a yawny variety show
oh and shea's "that was a NICE car" about Black Chyna fkn killed me, hilar
― Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 25 June 2017 00:02 (six years ago) link
Nice comparison re Annie! Hadn't thought of that at all.
(Yeah too bad Sasha got the worst guest video message thanks to Katy Perry. That seemed...all too convenient. Then again, Gaga would have been not only too obvious but thanks to her being in at the start would lead to accusations of bias. :-D )
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 June 2017 00:27 (six years ago) link
she seems like a very nice person but i just don't feel like that was the right decision. same silhouette every outfit, not much charisma imo and a worse dancer than pearl. i thought shea was so clearly the winner from the beginning.
― clouds, Sunday, 25 June 2017 00:31 (six years ago) link
i did too tbh and i was surprised she was such a mediocre lip-syncer
― he not like the banana (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 25 June 2017 00:37 (six years ago) link
yeah Shea didn't deliver nearly as well as I expected in the lipsync
I kinda thought Peppermint was kinda flat til her wig change in the first lipsync, without those gimmicks & the late energy burst I'd have given the first round to Trinity
― Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 25 June 2017 02:27 (six years ago) link
Agreed. And yeah, weird how Shea just seemed...there in her effort. Very surprising.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 June 2017 02:56 (six years ago) link
in the regular show that prob would have slayed but Sasha pushed into a higher gear that Shea just didnt have or wasnt prepared for
― Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 25 June 2017 03:40 (six years ago) link
Maybe (although I'm not sure this would be Ru's decision to make) Ru reckons that Shea just has enough shit going on just now and should maybe take some time out to gather herself and chill out, and then she'll blast the hell out of everyone in the next All Stars.
I was very lukewarm on Sasha till the final, where I thought she absolutely brought it, in terms of both her looks and her performance. Her Tudor/Papal/Jurassic Park frilled dinosaur look was majestic and alien, and her lipsyncing was A+. The initial removal of the gloves was very Gypsy Rose Lee.
The most enjoyable live finale so far. I wonder if they'll pick four queens again next year to get the same end result?
― trishyb, Sunday, 25 June 2017 08:44 (six years ago) link
I wonder if Shea's recent losses took away the urgency of her lipsyncs; I expected more from her.
Yeah too bad Sasha got the worst guest video message thanks to Katy Perry.
I thought this was a lost opportunity to introduce the real Judith Butler to the masses.

her song choices are so theatrical and awesome
that Wuthering Heights lipsync was gr8
I really appreciate Sasha more now that I've seen her lipsync. I also noticed the Annie Lennox influence during the finale performances.

yeah i feel like we only got half her steez in the show now that i've seen how good she is at the lipsync

Because...
Hollywood heartthrob Andrew Garfield has come out of the closet—sort of. The English actor currently stars in Tony Kushner’s Angels in America as Lewis Ironside, a man who struggles between his Jewish faith and homosexuality. During a recent panel discussion about his role, Garfield admitted preparation included watching past seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race. “Every Sunday I would have eight friends over and we would just watch Ru," the actor said. "I mean every single series of RuPaul’s Drag Race. I mean every series. This is my life outside of this play. I am a gay man right now just without the physical act—that’s all."

I one-thousand percent agree with their #1 choice.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 7 July 2017 23:51 (six years ago) link
This article argues that the lip syncs in the finale shouldn't even have happened and I judge this writer to have defective ideas.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 July 2017 23:53 (six years ago) link
yeah wtf
― Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 7 July 2017 23:57 (six years ago) link
I only argue that there should've been more lip syncs I the finale. They should've each lip synced against the other three individually and then tallied up points.

I just binge-rewatched season 3 over the weekend on Netflix and I might have to vote for that one. Then again I just like Raja a hell of a lot, so.
I'm doing this at the moment, but am reminded of how much I disliked the cliqueyness of season 3. And that it featured my two least favourite queens of all time: Mimi Imfurst and Delta Work.
― trishyb, Sunday, 9 July 2017 11:50 (six years ago) link
yeah i was not a fan of the cliqueyness at all
i like raven's s2 with tyra drama
s5 contains multitudes - rolaskatox, roxxy/jinx, coco/alyssa, i always forget how much goes down in that season
― Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 9 July 2017 14:44 (six years ago) link
It seemed to come from a similar place: older queen who's been in the business for a long time feels like younger queen is unprepared and shouldn't be there, but Raven didn't try to stoke the fires in the same way (or at least it wasn't edited like that).
Although I do love Raja. Her Marie Antoinette wig is one of the greatest thing I've ever seen on Drag Race.
― trishyb, Sunday, 9 July 2017 14:59 (six years ago) link
The way season 3 used race bothered me a lot, and I also hated the cliqueyness. Funny thing is that Shangela is one of my favorite alumna, even though she stirred up a lot of the clique drama.

― he not like the banana (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 10 July 2017 14:23 (six years ago) link
They're rough around the edges. (The show really came into its own with S4 and S5.) But they've got lots of fan favorites in the mix.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 10 July 2017 14:23 (six years ago) link
Season three is the one where "drag is not a contact sport" comes from, but yes, it's got a long way to go. Still a lot of workroom stuff, and I think it might be the last season to have footage of the queens in their little hotel rooms before coming to the workroom each day. Also, no big workroom entrances (missus!) and Ru still sits in on all the video directing stuff, which he no longer does (which I think is greatly to the detriment of the show, but hey, I guess he's just too busy these days).
― trishyb, Monday, 10 July 2017 14:46 (six years ago) link
first two seasons look very different from the rest of the series, esp the runway - lots of soft focus and there's very little in the way of set dressing
the reunion for season 1 is must-see tv. Ru lets Tammie Brown HAVE it in a way that I don't think anyone's really seen Ru do before or since. She came close with Pearl but Ru put Tammy on face-melting blast.
but there's some great contestants in the first 2 seasons - nina flowers, bebe zahara benet, ongina, raven, jujubee, morgan mcmichaels etc etc all legendary

I genuinely think that it's interesting to watch each successive season how the quality of the show overall improves in inverse proportion to the depth of the talent bench. OK, that's maybe a bit harsh, but I do think the days of having slates like S4 and S5 had are probably in the past.
― Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 10 July 2017 16:15 (six years ago) link
I think the point about a younger generation coming up having grown up ON the show is an unavoidable issue, though.

I remember that season 4 showed a very brief montage of the queens doing their morning preparation, specifically the Princess doing some yoga.
