Ughhhhhh twitter

quet inn tarnation (darraghmac), Tuesday, 27 June 2017 22:33 (six years ago) link

Someone please explain to me what the fuck "Don't @ me" means.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 29 June 2017 18:23 (six years ago) link

When a man hates a woman very much, sometimes he replies to her tweets with mansplainy bullshit that misses the point. Sometimes the woman pre-empts this by saying "don't @me", because "@user" is how you reply to someone.

And now everyone says when they want to say "this challops is my challops and I dgaf"

By now it's just standing by something perceived as unpopular or out of character. "I'm a brony, don't @ me"

xp fuiud covers it perfectly

twitter sort of feels like the world finally realizing what ilx, or just text-based message boards in general, are like

like you come across a post like this

Can this possibly be true, or am I being had. pic.twitter.com/fGfB6C6XSH

— Dawn Foster (@DawnHFoster) July 7, 2017

and you're like "i'm sure we had a thread about this 10 years ago"

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 7 July 2017 07:23 (six years ago) link

LOL and my response to Dawn was exactly the same as my wayback ILX answer, let's just pray she doesn't start a Twitter tipping thread.

I feel like I'm rapidly coming to the end of my rope with political/argumentative/current affairs Twitter - not exactly sure why but it's something to do with 1) anything I could say is already being said better by someone else 2) i have evidence of this phenomenon in all the vaguely similar "zings" etc that litter my timeline

Sorely tempted to unfollow everyone and then slowly re-curate a better experience

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 24 July 2017 21:13 (six years ago) link

yeah all the funny people turned into pundits that loathe pundits over the past few years

global tetrahedron, Monday, 24 July 2017 21:16 (six years ago) link

krang t nelson is the epitome of this for me, like funny but exhausting and sort of annoying

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 24 July 2017 21:26 (six years ago) link

tracer i encourage you to quit and then start over. i did, i like it a lot more now, even though it's like 90% the same experience. when i got on twitter a few years ago i was trying to 'keep track of the discourse' and it was awful.

there are services out there that will mass delete and unfollow for you.

goole, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 19:25 (six years ago) link

I've been considering burning down my entire social media presence for a couple weeks now and I finally emptied the gas can on it and threw the match on it. LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, etc. etc. Zeroed out and gone.

Genuinely feels good.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 30 July 2017 19:38 (six years ago) link

i think i joined twitter in like 2011 but didn't go back until this past november right around the election. the intervening 9 months have felt like years. so many nazis.

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Sunday, 30 July 2017 19:53 (six years ago) link

...all except for us of course ;)

Of course because I never considered ILX to be "social media" as there's no up/down voting, liking, faving or anything that turns conversation into incentivized transactions.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 30 July 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

Its pretty good to mix political stuff with the weirder things like dril (although that's pretty unique as its not v political - unlike @Hippo, say). Lots of funny shit comes into my TL to temper the awful news feed.

Don't think its gonna last but have a look at McDonald's Hong Kong. So good.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 30 July 2017 20:59 (six years ago) link

Twitter is not gonna last, no five years (at most). Once an extreme addict (and I know the cured seem to be the worst opponents to their former addiction) but twitter is p much dead to me. Dipped my toes into it tonight after months of absence, during a tv thing that was supposed to be bonding, but the only ppl left seem to be ppl stanning hard for the exreme right or left; no nuance whatsoever. No leverage. No attempt at discussion. Nothing. It makes me hate my friends, my ~twitter friends~, and most of all myself. Rip twitter. Its death cannot come soon enough.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 30 July 2017 21:10 (six years ago) link

There is quite a lot of nuance on twitter - and you can avoid a lot of politics if you are simply fed up of it. Film and book-twitter are pretty good.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 30 July 2017 21:13 (six years ago) link

yeah twitter is great

k3vin k., Monday, 31 July 2017 03:17 (six years ago) link

Film and book-twitter are pretty good.

Recommendations? I avoided Twitter until, like, two weeks ago, mostly so that I could tweet at Google and complain I did not get my hard earned free socks (long story). But then I was all, hey, I'm on twitter, what should I do? So I followed a dozen or so political things, and then ... stopped following people. Mostly because, like Facebook, I get the distinct feeling it is not showing me everything I want to see, not in order, not comprehensively, just sort of AI curated. Facebook, for example, I would peak at on my phone, think huh, then move to my computer for a better read and get different stuff. Facebook, fwiw, I need to stay in touch with certain friends and family. Twitter is more to kill time in airports and trains and stuff, but maybe I'm using it wrong? Oh, I did use it to contact the lead guitarist of the Cars with a question, and he got back to me, so maybe that makes it all worth while?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 31 July 2017 03:21 (six years ago) link

I got into it with an Oklahoma manufactured homes dealer on the Fourth of July because their home page had a photo of the Sydney Harbour Bridge during a New Years Eve fireworks display. Afterward, I was all oh yeah, this is what twitters all about.

pplains, Monday, 31 July 2017 04:29 (six years ago) link

Well I follow some film/book reviewers/webzine accounts then gradually you see some of the comments beneath and you follow those ppl too. Then, over time, after some more following/unfollowing you settle into a bunch of people although every now and then you find new voices (its akin to reading or trusting an opinion of one ilx film/book person over another although I read as much from as many people as I can). Mine tend to be London-centric but some US stuff at times comes in.

Twitter is great for killing time at airports, trains etc., while you are on the move. Its perfect for that but not only that and its ok if it only remains that.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 31 July 2017 20:47 (six years ago) link

One of my favorite Twitter users, PokemonyeWest, passed away. Mourning on the Internet is still an odd thing, even though I've been online for almost 30 years and seen a lot of deaths (of people I knew well, knew vaguely, and only knew via celebrity) over that time.

A lot of people misunderstand free speech. e.g. it's completely legal for the government to put you in prison if you ever post an XKCD comic

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 19:38 (six years ago) link

is it possible to deactivate an account without twitter deleting your shit? (twitter say they only start to delete after 30 days but this guy's testimonial says they deleting his entire following list & other shit after day 1)

is scrambling my password the only option if i need to take indefinite break?
