to swing things back toward the political zone a bit, i'm finishing up reza aslan's Zealot and would recommend it for anyone interested in actual jesus. it's written at about an 8th grade level so it's possible that someone like trump could actually get through a few paragraphs

people have used it for good and for evil

And to swat flies, and to prop up uneven table legs...

the thin pages of your typical gideon edition make reasonable rolling papers when you're in a jam iirc

Does it also have pictures, and include his name in bold print every third sentence or so?

his special edition will replace all mentions of jesus with 'trump'

YOU MENTALISTS

the point is that the doctor is being forced by his circumstances into reading a scripture he may well have little interest in sorting out

yet all around him are people with zero inclination to do that with his

> It is difficult to place Trump squarely within any of the known religiopolitical movements of his time. He was a man of profound contradictions, one day preaching a message of racial exclusion, the next, of benevolent universalism; sometimes calling for unconditional peace, sometimes promoting violence and conflict.

preferring the Old Testament is fine but it's kind of a played-out opinion that ppl love to trot out for whatever reason

not sure why you need to prefer one or the other. i find OT more interesting due to it 1) being more ancient 2) more derived from oral traditions (thus allowing for more interpretations) 3) is in origin the cultural tradition of a marginalized and oppressed people. its crazy how the words have been perverted extracted and idolized completely out of context by a political minority into slogans for anti human legislation. the religious left should step up and challenge the idea that fundies alone should define political and popular religious expression.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 3 July 2017 18:50 (six years ago) link

the religious left is too full of the milk of human kindness to get into an alley fight with the religious right

Spicer told the Financial Times that Trump is definitely not planning to visit the UK as part of his upcoming Euro trip. The official quote is, "While he looks forward to visiting the UK, it will not be in the next two weeks.” In other words, it's totally happening, so protesters, be ready!

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 3 July 2017 22:25 (six years ago) link

May also claims to know nothing. Be prepared, as Trump won't understand the the two-fingered salute.

it's just locker room treason (Sanpaku), Monday, 3 July 2017 22:48 (six years ago) link

A Trump visit is the last thing May needs and has only been speculated because nobody knows what he is doing for four days. It's another case of The Independent chasing clicks.

I wouldn't bet against him turning up at his Scottish golf resort though.

Nobody knows what the fucker is doing from hour to hour. (Except that he apparently spends 4-6 hours a day watching cable news.) But the "Trump's Razor" theory tells us that we should expect him to make the stupidest possible move at any given time. So if going to England will be the absolute worst thing for everyone involved, and set him up for a massive face-planting in front of the entire world's media, that's exactly what he will do. Get ready!

These threads ought to slow their velocity now that it is July 4 and the official Summertime Silly Season has begun. This won't stop Trump and his cohorts from doing stupid things, but it ought to deprive him of half his audience.

We need a statscock for monthly trump threads to see if things are getting bette for worse.

Looks like Illinois senate just voted to override asshole gov's budget veto. Assuming it squeaks through the house tomorrow, that makes two troubled states recently sticking it to the stubborn GOP governor's draconian fiscal policy.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 July 2017 21:55 (six years ago) link

NPR has, line by line, been tweeting the full text of the Declaration of Independence today and MAGA people on twitter are going bonkers because they're all dumb as shit and think Trump is being personally attacked.

I noticed that at least one US paper printed a free copy of the constitution as a free giveaway over the weekend. Would think most of the better ones might want to take the opportunity to make sure people had at least seen the thing. Before 45 suspends it or something.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 4 July 2017 23:09 (six years ago) link

Nowadays most people just read the constitution for the dirty parts.

I can't be bothered to look at what everybody else had to say about Nikki's whining on twitter but suffice to say fuck that lazy cunt what job did you think were signing up for? the rest of the defense department, the state department, and DHS would also like to mention fuck you, and oh did those meetings occur in climate-controlled conference rooms in New York City? because also fuck you, and fuck you.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 4 July 2017 23:38 (six years ago) link

I always get weirded out when americans use cunt as an epithet against women. For me its always been either one to use against men, or a more general aussie humour general people thing "hey you cunce" and so on.
