TILLERSON: The two leaders also acknowledged the challenges of cyberthreats and interference in the democratic processes of the United States and other countries and agreed to explore creating a framework around which the two countries can work together to better understand how to deal with the cyberthreats, both in terms of how these tools are used to interfere with the internal affairs of countries, but also how these tools are used to threaten infrastructure, how these tools are used from a terrorism standpoint as well.

Ironically, Russia and China have been pressing for a dedicated international treaty covering cyber security for years (and have signed a bilateral one covering it) but the US has always resisted - either because they think it is better to fit cyber crime, espionage, etc, into the existing framework of international law or because they don't want to limit their own offensive capabilities, depending on who you ask.

this seems pretty convincing as an explanation of Palin's 14 words tweet (explanation but not really exculpation given that this is surely an occupational hazard of retweeting articles from crypto-nazi websites)

http://www.thedailybeast.com/heres-why-sarah-palin-tweeted-the-neo-nazi-slogan-14-words?via=twitter_page

Palin did not immediately return requests for comment on the matter, but the answer for her social-media captions more realistically lies in the Young Conservative website’s backend.

While the headline and the article’s URL make no mention of the neo-Nazi phrase, one astute Twitter user pointed out that the manually selected Facebook caption—which automatically comes up when a user clicks the “Share” button on YoungCon’s website—contains the “14 words” reference.

ironies abound. to think that after all this time and patriotic chest beating the republicans, not the democrats, would sell out to russia is just too much :)

The only problem with this is that it'll piss off Merle's shade when Trump ends up signing it.

Looks like next week, House is considering HR 1988, a bill to name a post office in Bakersfield, Calif. after MERLE HAGGARD

This has been making the rounds lately, a rare rocking later-era Ringo performance with no second drummer, er, ringer:

TBF China puts the suppression on free speech on the internet squarely in he hands of its cyber security administration so it's unlikely any kind of satisfactory Tracey could be concluded.

I would have thought that levels of clearance to be even in a room with that bunch of heads of state would be really exclusive. & being the daughter and wife of known felons might just count against one.

Would be lovely if outcry from this lead to something actually being done about things.
But looks like the others didn't object.
Is that a sign of things being normalized that really shouldn't be? Outrage fatigue?

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 July 2017 12:42 (six years ago) link

The readout of Trump’s lengthy meeting with Putin included several key points. First, the United States will “move on” from election hacking issues with no accountability or consequences for Russia; in fact, the U.S. will form a “framework” with Russia to cooperate on cybersecurity issues, evaluating weaknesses and assessing potential responses jointly. Second, the two presidents agreed not to meddle in “each other’s” domestic affairs—equating American activities to promote democracy with Russian aggression aimed at undermining it, in an incalculable PR victory for the Kremlin. Third, the announced, limited cease-fire in Syria will be a new basis for cooperation between the U.S. and Russia; Secretary of State Rex Tillerson went so far as to say that the Russian approach in Syria—yielding mass civilian casualties, catastrophic displacement, untold destruction and erased borders—may be “more right” than that of the United States.

It's pretty amazing the Trump administration isn't taking steps to dispel the perception they are being influenced by Putin.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 July 2017 12:47 (six years ago) link

The themes of these speeches—speaking not of values but “civilization,” not of alliances but “sovereignty,” not of minority rights but the defense of the rights of the majority based on concepts of “traditional values”—were all central tenets of Trump’s speech in Warsaw, which was littered with illiberal buzzwords meant to catch the ear of those like-minded while simultaneously placating potential critics. Trump championed rhetoric and ideas that Putin had carefully crafted—ideas that some of Trump’s own advisers embrace.

This sort of gets it backwards though. Bannon and Miller don't believe in the the "clash of civilizations" narrative because they are following Putin's lead. America has it's own version of ethnic nationalism and their affinity for Putin stems from there. It's actually worse than if Putin had just installed a puppet regime here: a large contingent of Republican voters want the US to abandon its commitments to internationalism and human rights.

Treeship, Saturday, 8 July 2017 12:49 (six years ago) link

To be more specific, they don't believe we have any such commitments, or if we do, they aren't legitimate.
