Ironically, Russia and China have been pressing for a dedicated international treaty covering cyber security for years (and have signed a bilateral one covering it) but the US has always resisted - either because they think it is better to fit cyber crime, espionage, etc, into the existing framework of international law or because they don't want to limit their own offensive capabilities, depending on who you ask.

TBF China puts the suppression on free speech on the internet squarely in he hands of its cyber security administration so it's unlikely any kind of satisfactory Tracey could be concluded.

She has a job in the administration.

I would have thought that levels of clearance to be even in a room with that bunch of heads of state would be really exclusive. & being the daughter and wife of known felons might just count against one.

Would be lovely if outcry from this lead to something actually being done about things.
But looks like the others didn't object.
Is that a sign of things being normalized that really shouldn't be? Outrage fatigue?

Stevolende, Saturday, 8 July 2017 11:38 (six years ago) link

This Politico piece is depressing and scary. Welcome back to the 19th Century, folks - but this time we've got nukes!

grawlix (unperson), Saturday, 8 July 2017 11:56 (six years ago) link

I assume the G20 leaders have all seen this sort of thing before, just not from us.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 July 2017 12:42 (six years ago) link

The readout of Trump’s lengthy meeting with Putin included several key points. First, the United States will “move on” from election hacking issues with no accountability or consequences for Russia; in fact, the U.S. will form a “framework” with Russia to cooperate on cybersecurity issues, evaluating weaknesses and assessing potential responses jointly. Second, the two presidents agreed not to meddle in “each other’s” domestic affairs—equating American activities to promote democracy with Russian aggression aimed at undermining it, in an incalculable PR victory for the Kremlin. Third, the announced, limited cease-fire in Syria will be a new basis for cooperation between the U.S. and Russia; Secretary of State Rex Tillerson went so far as to say that the Russian approach in Syria—yielding mass civilian casualties, catastrophic displacement, untold destruction and erased borders—may be “more right” than that of the United States.

It's pretty amazing the Trump administration isn't taking steps to dispel the perception they are being influenced by Putin.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 July 2017 12:47 (six years ago) link

The themes of these speeches—speaking not of values but “civilization,” not of alliances but “sovereignty,” not of minority rights but the defense of the rights of the majority based on concepts of “traditional values”—were all central tenets of Trump’s speech in Warsaw, which was littered with illiberal buzzwords meant to catch the ear of those like-minded while simultaneously placating potential critics. Trump championed rhetoric and ideas that Putin had carefully crafted—ideas that some of Trump’s own advisers embrace.

This sort of gets it backwards though. Bannon and Miller don't believe in the the "clash of civilizations" narrative because they are following Putin's lead. America has it's own version of ethnic nationalism and their affinity for Putin stems from there. It's actually worse than if Putin had just installed a puppet regime here: a large contingent of Republican voters want the US to abandon its commitments to internationalism and human rights.

Treeship, Saturday, 8 July 2017 12:49 (six years ago) link

To be more specific, they don't believe we have any such commitments, or if we do, they aren't legitimate.

One detail of this story makes me think McConnell already thinks it's over, and just wants to save face:

McConnell is expected to place greater responsibility on Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) to pitch his controversial amendment that would allow insurers to offer plans that don’t meet ACA requirements — provided they also offer some that do. McConnell could ask Cruz to speak to Republican senators as soon as Tuesday, according to a person familiar with his strategy. Cruz has often talked about his amendment in the senators’ regular Tuesday lunches, but the burden of building support for the bill could be left to the firebrand conservative.

Yeah, let Ted Cruz reach out to the rest. Everyone loves Ted Cruz. Of course they will do as he pitches...

Negotiators haggled late into Friday night over language declaring that 19 of the G-20 members consider the Paris accord “irreversible,” an effort to cast the United States as an outlier for jettisoning the pact while glossing over friction about the decision.

But American officials were pressing language saying the United States would work with other nations to help them gain access to and use fossil fuels “more cleanly and efficiently.” This suggestion met with stiff resistance from President Emmanuel Macron of France.

Mr. Trump did little to paper over the disagreement, although his staff made sure that he did not have to listen to much criticism on climate change. His meeting with Mr. Putin was scheduled to begin just 15 minutes after the start of a G-20 working session on “Sustainable Growth, Climate, and Energy,” so he left after making a brief statement on the matter.

I now realize the article even hints at that:

It’s not yet clear whether Cruz’s proposal would be allowed under arcane Senate rules that Republicans are using to pass their bill with a simple majority rather than the supermajority required of most legislation. It’s also unclear what the impact would be on coverage levels or the deficit. The CBO is reviewing it along with other proposed changes, according to Republicans familiar with the situation. To some in McConnell’s orbit, Cruz is taking a risk by waging such a public campaign for his measure before those aspects are determined.

Cruz stands to be left responsible for the success or failure of a conservative amendment that could alienate other Republicans or undermine the special protections allowing the bill to pass along GOP party lines.

A Cruz spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

The US president said: “I’m very proud of my daughter Ivanka, always have been from day one. I have to tell you that, from day one. If she weren’t my daughter, it’d be so much easier for her. It might be the only bad thing she has going, if you want to know the truth"

But if she wasn't your daughter, you'd have been dating her, so Catch-22.

does everyone turn into a fucking gibbering moron when 'satirising' trump seriously

sorry that's a little bit strong but come on folks

imago, Saturday, 8 July 2017 23:18 (six years ago) link

when trying to satirize someone, one must strive to achieve a certain resemblance to one's subject, or risk one's audience not recognizing who you are making fun of. hence, one must, in satirizing Trump, perforce sound like a gibbering moron to some extent.
