Off-topic somewhat, but has anyone here ever been on a train that hit a "jumper"?
Two weeks ago (June 23) my F train hit a jumper at Jay St. The guy died. It was the second time I've had that experience. Don't know exactly how common this is, but it seems that in such cases if no details about the victim come forth immediately the story gets buried.

I was on a train that hit someone while I was in the front of the front car. It wasn't a jumper, but someone who was on the tracks trying get out I think (there was some map of subway accidents that I found that had a listing for it at a much later date).
It was pretty shocking - motorman laying on the horn, swearing, slamming brakes, the sound of the impact, more swearing, yelling that it was 'a 12-9', police walking us off, me and my friend choosing to stare straight ahead to avoid seeing anything gruesome.
This eve the train I was on laid on the horn super hard at one point coming into a station - it still really unnerves me.

I just use Google or Apple maps when I want to find the fastest route fyi.
― chinavision!, Saturday, 8 July 2017 03:40 (six years ago) link
But Kickmap is what I use for a subway map-specific app because it is more legible and attractive.
Yeah, with this last incident the brakes were slammed on abruptly and there was an unnerving delay of five minutes or so before the first announcement - "we have a possible injured passenger at the front of the train," this repeated about 10 times before they finally evacuated us through the car second from the front.

i think i mention upthread about when i jumped on the tracks to help get a woman who fell in out. that's distinct too.

Got out at next stop to the A, and that was fucked, too. I've had worse commutes this summer.

most of the comments ive seen on the blas tax hike scheme took it as a chess move to get cuomo to propose something else. who knows but cuomo then suddenly came out in favor of congestion taxes for cars entering manhattan which he'd never touched with a ten foot pole before. no doubt by the time any such plan actually gets enacted it'll be down to a nickel toll (or be wiped out by reductions on the tolls at crosisngs that already have them) and none of it going to the subways.

So when there is a doublewide stairway my assumption is that the protocol is that the far right hand side is the ascending side ( when one is at the lower level) and the left-right side serves as a passing lane. Sometimes people will try to sneak an endrun when this lane is empty but that seems dodgy.

Or do the two sides around the center rail actually constitute two separate stairways, each with its own up and down lane?

I think your first description is correct, but people often fall into the second pattern, especially when a crowded train has emptied a lot of passengers into the station.

As Jimmy Breslin used to say, beautiful.
“We’ll be able to see what can be done, what can’t be done, if we’re unsuccessful in getting the full amount of money,” Lhota told the MTA board Wednesday.
He vowed not to “spend one penny more” than what’s now in this year’s budget.
Lhota refused to say what work could be derailed....
“I hope the mayor will come up with the money to work in partnership with the governor, because it’s a city-state issue,” said Larry Schwartz, a former Cuomo aide and MTA board member.

― mookieproof, Thursday, 19 October 2017 17:47 (six years ago) link
obvs point perhaps not so obvs for non-urban dwellers but it's not so much that you are walking slow as it is that there is a limited amount of sidewalk/stairs/crosswalk and you are actively and unnecessarily blocking the flow of traffic. I don't mind slow walkers if they hover to one side or the other; my main issue is motherfuckers who take up the whole sidewalk with a conversation or walk three deep. Or, worse, sections of town in front of hotels, bars, restaurants, etc where people treat the sidewalk as if it's a patio and set up a human wall in the middle of a walkway.

in general, it's just that lack of situational awareness is exhausting for anyone who has to make their way around the city in a hurry. You can assume everyone is late to something (the MTA has seen to that) so maybe please don't crawl or sprawl out in public space
