A guy called Rinat Akhmetshin was running smear campaigns against prominent supporters of the Magnitsky act at the time - and working with the lawyer in question, Veselnitskaya, on behalf of the real estate company Prevezon. His job was to dig up and spin any dirt he could find. Prevezon, as was mentioned in the article, was under indictment for money laundering.

There isn't necessarily any link to hacking or government conspiracies but it definitely looks like they were lobbied directly by a company pretty obviously guilty of laundering large sums through NY real estate and who were, at the time, involved both in dirty tricks and in trying to get political leverage to drive down their liabilities.

Y'all complained about "covfefe," but I'd rather deal with that thing than opening this thread to Scott Walker's endless plain of bland.

I love that jr's defense is "yes i tried to collude, but the woman tricked me into taking a meeting about adoption"

At the least it seems like something Trump Jr. gets to be questioned over (whether by Mueller, Senate Intelligence or both is what I wonder).

Seeing it described like that, and that Donald Jr was allowed to be involved, makes me think they probably weren't capable of actually colluding. But sure seems as if they tried to. And a fun question is why Manafort and Kushner all of a sudden disclosed the meeting. Sure seems like something else is about to drop.

basically are administration sources trying to preemptively steer away from the possibility that there was some kind of quid pro quo involved? did some of them try to change US policy to make it more favorable to russia and in exchange for what?

At a guess, it's probably because they told a bunch of people that was what it was about at the time. The most recent article suggests that there were a few people corroborating who were informed.

The timing might have something to do with the fact that the case against Prevezon was only settled a couple of weeks ago - in a manner that let the company maintain the idea that they had not been found guilty of any wrongdoing (while paying $6m).

That this is using a unique connection with voters to put pressure on congress, instead of looking irrational, impulsive, unhelpful. He is believing his own hype, that's one of the stupidest things about him.

I dunno, the 'but other people probably did it before I did it so what's even the big deal!' strategy is a pretty canny move. This chess has an infinite number of dimensions.

It's not the crime it's the coverup, doofus. It's not that you took the meeting (though it might be) it's that you did not admit to it, and it's sketchy/suspicious enough that your cohort had to amend a disclosure. Dum Dum Jr.
