The general Trumpian level of hygiene alone bespeaks unwellness.

what I want to know is - why is this highly damaging and super sketchy rationale (he thought the russians would give him dirt on clinton!) the explanation given by the trump people?? the previous NYT article about this meeting yesterday said the meeting was about adoption policy. now this.

At a guess, it's probably because they told a bunch of people that was what it was about at the time. The most recent article suggests that there were a few people corroborating who were informed.

The timing might have something to do with the fact that the case against Prevezon was only settled a couple of weeks ago - in a manner that let the company maintain the idea that they had not been found guilty of any wrongdoing (while paying $6m).

I get the feeling he actually thinks this is smart:

I cannot imagine that Congress would dare to leave Washington without a beautiful new HealthCare bill fully approved and ready to go!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 10, 2017

That this is using a unique connection with voters to put pressure on congress, instead of looking irrational, impulsive, unhelpful. He is believing his own hype, that's one of the stupidest things about him.

Frederik B, Monday, 10 July 2017 11:49 (six years ago) link

he inherited a lot of money. in the united states, that makes you better than everyone else, except for the other people who inherited a lot of money

I don't have cable, so I'm just gonna assume this is exactly what was said on Fox & Friends this morning (since he's already retweeted their account like six times today):

When I left Conference Room for short meetings with Japan and other countries, I asked Ivanka to hold seat. Very standard. Angela M agrees!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 10, 2017

Meant to include Part 2 of this "thought":

If Chelsea Clinton were asked to hold the seat for her mother,as her mother gave our country away, the Fake News would say CHELSEA FOR PRES!

It's amazing that he's still able to form words even as the Creutzfeldt-Jakob eats away what little is left of his brain.

Duane Quarterdump (Old Lunch), Monday, 10 July 2017 12:35 (six years ago) link

This strikes me as a bad move.

Obviously I'm the first person on a campaign to ever take a meeting to hear info about an opponent... went nowhere but had to listen. https://t.co/ccUjL1KDEa

I dunno, the 'but other people probably did it before I did it so what's even the big deal!' strategy is a pretty canny move. This chess has an infinite number of dimensions.

Duane Quarterdump (Old Lunch), Monday, 10 July 2017 13:29 (six years ago) link

It's not the crime it's the coverup, doofus. It's not that you took the meeting (though it might be) it's that you did not admit to it, and it's sketchy/suspicious enough that your cohort had to amend a disclosure. Dum Dum Jr.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 July 2017 13:34 (six years ago) link

I love how Trump's Chelsea tweet is basically admitting that he's giving the country away.

Moodles, Monday, 10 July 2017 13:41 (six years ago) link

Good morning Mr. President. It would never have occurred to my mother or my father to ask me. Were you giving our country away? Hoping not. https://t.co/4ODjWZUp0c

Don Jr. basically looks exactly like what he is, the greasy bad guy son of the evil bad guy in an '80s comedy.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 July 2017 13:49 (six years ago) link

I mean, I get it. If he hadn't had Melania save his seat while he was away, some other country could've snuck in and taken the US's place among the G20.
